  • When you go overseas do you still get incoming text (OTP codes etc.) or do we have to buy roaming?

    • Yes incoming text still works

      • Thanks but the live chat confirmed no incoming text would be received without purchasing roaming.

        • +1

You can receive text and calls without roaming if your phone has WiFi calling enabled (and obviously a WiFi connection).

        • +1

Well, they're wrong! Use wifi calling and you'll receive txts while overseas (and connected to wifi).

In saying this their roaming packs do work well if you need them. We went to 6 different countries last year and my phone worked everywhere without dramas while on the 14-day roaming pack. And much cheaper than the $10/day Telstra option, about $100 cheaper if you're away for 14 days!

          • @PhilToinby: I used amaysim roaming at Xmas, 9gig and 100min calls for $70 and it lasts a year, only used 3gig in 2 weeks so will use again in May for another 2 weeks

        • I was in Japan last week and currently in Singapore, no roaming pack, OTP sms all coming through with no problems, no wifi required. I think live chat are confused or trying to upsell you.

          • @md333: Yeah same experience for me too while I was in Japan last January.

    • Which countries inbound SMS works in is unknown until you get there!
I get SMS in South Africa but not Botswana.

  • Is boost better than Tangerine?
Tangerine sucks at home and in some department stores / underground carparks etc

    • Boost runs the Telstra network. I've never had any issues with it, except in extreme situations (say in the elevator of city skyscraper).

    • I like boost. Service is great and auto regharge is not mandatory.

Is Auto recharge mandatory with Tangerine?

      • I'm on post paid

  • Perfect timing for my wife’s 2 months free at Tangerine finishing, thanks OP! Ordered. Shopping options were a bit weird but just went with free.

    roaming and esim,amaysim please

  • Is the site legit? Looks a bit dodgy?

    • Just pay using PayPal and if something goes wrong you can lodge a PayPal dispute and get your money back

  • Anyone have any ideas how I could confirm whether I'd be able to make and receive calls after 3G shutdown on a Pixel 2 with this SIM? The best I can find is
    https://www.telstra.com.au/support/mobiles-devices/enable-vo…

Says "All Google Pixel phones", but Pixel 2 was released before 2019 AFAIK.

I also tested putting a work SIM that is Telstra into my Pixel 2 and the "4G Calling" slider became visible when connected to Telstra vs my current Kogan sim whiich the option disappears. Similar to this
    https://deviceguides.vodafone.co.uk/google/pixel-6-pro-andro…

Tried messaging Telstra support but long wait times…

I was planning on using one of those free/profittable 28 day Boost sims to check (after June 2024), and that could still happen even if i purchase this.

    • Dude get a new phone lmao.

    • Says supported according to this website

      https://willmyphonework.net/

      • +1

That doesn’t check if the device supports VoLTE, just the bands unfortunately. You’re seeing 4G calling which is a good sign and (should) work after the shutdown.

      • Thanks though I think this line may also apply as a limitation for 4G calling working " Certain carriers such as Verizon USA have an "approved list" of devices."
Otherwise I would expect when I put the Kogan Sim into the Pixel 2, it should also display "4G Calling"

        • +1

Yes 4G calling is VoLTE, depending on the carrier they only support certain devices but if you have the option showing and enabled, it should continue to work.

    • Pixel 2 XL will work with Telstra but Optus and Vodafone don't support the device. Pixel 3 XL will not work with Telstra wholesale as there is a bug in VoLTE on the network. Telstra retail works fine on Pixel 3 XL same with Optus

  • So how does porting work? Do I just buy the sim, then go to their site to port my old number? I heard Boost’s porting is a bit of a roll of the dice where it can range from near instant to frustrating customer service calls, is this true?

    • +1

The instructions will be within the pack you receive but yes basically you go to a website. Porting experiences are fairly personal. One person will never have an issue and one will have one and it'll take forever to resolve. All porting is a roll of the dice really.

  • Are these deals ever for existing users extending their service? Seems like they’re only ever for new customers.

    • +2

It’s like all companies. The key KPI is always new customers not how many existing customers they have. Research usually shows most consumers are lazy and don’t bother to switch and are willing to pay higher price to save switching effort. Obviously probably doesn’t apply to your typical ozbarganer

      • Thanks for the tip. Then the strategy is to switch between providers for an ongoing discount

  • I'm currently on a 12 month Woolworths plan, due to expire in a couple of months - trying to decide if it's worth switching to a 5G plan as I've been reading some mixed reviews, that 4G can generally be more reliable for reception (I'm not looking for mobile internet speed)

    • It doesn’t matter because if there isn’t any 5g reception it will just go to 4g. It is not a case of either 5g or nothing. It’s 5g then 4g then nothing

      • But what I gather is that it could be poor 5G, when you could otherwise get good 4G - the phone won't switch to full bar 4G if you can get 1 bar of 5G

        • If you’re in a city then you’ll be fine. But if you can do everything you need to with 4g then just stick with the cheaper 4g plan

        • You can generally just turn off 5g in phone settings if you don't want it. That is what I do (pixel 8)

I recently had to do the old 'whoops I accidentally bought the wrong recharge, can you please let me activate this sim with my current number' for 3 seperate numbers…

It was impossible via chat on all 3 attempts, they flat out refused and told it had to be done via a phone call to boost customer support. Even on the phone, each time they were very reluctant, suggesting that I return the sim kit for a refund and then to recharge via their app.

Just something to keep in mind, I believe this method of saving money with boost may well be on the way out.

    • This. The old days of taking to customer service to let it through are gone

    • So they refused to do it in the end? That sucks.

      • +1

No they did it, but were very reluctant throughout the process.

  • +1

Great timing with the recent Optus price increase in plans.

  • hi, is everyone else having to pay via direct pay transfer after checking out? Is this reliable? i.e could very well be out of stock and would have to deal w the hassle of getting a refund.

    • There should be a PayPal option

  • Thanks OP. Ordered one. For some reason the order confirmation email went to the spam folder.

The site is a bit weird and the shipping options list is ridiculous. Used PayPal for payment and hopefully the transaction will go smoothly.

    • Thanks - I was looking for my order confirmation and it was right there in my spam folder

  • +1

The 170Gb / $187 one is out of stock.

  • I've been with boost for years cause I'm too lazy to churn (and i'm scared if they stuff something up and i lose my number)

My phone is only 4g and the signal is horrible around most places in the ACT. Cross over the border to visit parents and a lot of the time ozbargain won't even load. Could be a different story with 5g, I need to upgrade my phone.

    • That's why companies don't have deals for existing customer only new customers. Most people are also too lazy or scared to go to a new provider (for anything, not just phone plans)

Been with Boost for the last 4 years, was on their OG plan of $150/year. It has gone up quite a bit since then.

Have to admit, Boost coverage hasn't been the best for the last 2 years - mainly because I believe Telstra devices getting more priority. I constantly get 2 bars max in a lot of Metro Melbourne areas.

Their overseas roaming packs are good and cheaper compared to Telstra. Also Wifi calling and texting is great if you don't want to buy a roaming pack. Two main reasons I'm not switching to Telstra.

Been using the trick with chat for the last 3 years for recharge. Comments suggest that it doesn't work anymore so might not do the hassle of porting in/out and just recharge in the app.

  • Reading through the comments it seems that from this year onward I will have to port out to another provider then switch back to Boost? Please correct me if I am wrong.

  • both are OOS now.

Managed to price match at Officeworks with lucky mobile

    • via call centre or in store ?

      • In store

  • There is 40 more in stock now for the $230 SIM.
    $300 still OOS.

  • I went to store in Glen Waverley and call online office. They don’t price beat with luck mobile.

    • Previous deal had several competing stores all around the same price, however, there is nothing else at this moment. Since this is a 12 months sim card, you can't exactly stock up on them unless you plan to port in and out each time, so timing matters.

  • Thanks op, picked up the $230 170GB.

Also seems like they restocked things, the $300 260gb for $249 has 18 in stock, and $230 170gb for $179 has 12 in stock at the time of this comment. Might be worth updating

  • $230 170GB is out of stock now, hopefully they restock. 8 left of the $300

  • Back in stock for those that missed out

  • Back in stock! As reported to mod.

  • waiting delivery

  • $230 SIM is showing as out of stock atm.

  • Can you use esim on this deal?

    • They will send a physical sim which I expect you need to activate, but then you'll be able to convert it to esim.

  • it is out of stock. Any other deals from other shop for this sim?

  • 12-Month Prepaid SIM: $230 170GB is now available.

    • Thanks, I've updated the deal.

    • Thanks, grabbed one.
