Apple MacBook Pro M2 Max 2023, 32GB RAM, 1TB SSD, Silver or Space Gray, 16" or 14" $4497 Each Metro Delivered/ C&C @ Officeworks

420

Missing the $4457 deal from JB-HiFi last year, been looking for this deal since then, finally got stock again from officeworks with a slightly higher price, not sure when the deal will be ended.

Both 14 inch and 16 inch are the same price with the highest non-customised specs. Compare to others eg. ebay, wireless1, jw…. this deal is pretty stunning.

Stock level seems to be very limited (at least in QLD) - checked with staff in officeworks, saying only two 16inch in silver left in the warehouse, Not sure about others (16 inch space gray and 14 inch).

Same specs in refurbished condition from apple selling $4759 and it's out of stock.

  • +13

    Thanks got 10

  • Just curious - what do people use these for with these top specs?

    • +18

i hang one off each ear to flex

    • +5

      Play minecraft and tetris

    • +12

32gb is what I'd consider to be the minimum for development with a Docker environment (considering Docker on macOS requires a VM).

Not really "top specs". This should really be the base specs for the "Pro" line imo.

      • +1

True, that's why I used the term 'highest non-customised' 😂, making the purchasing excuse to my wife sounds more reasonable.

      • 32gb is what I'd consider to be the minimum for development with a Docker environment

What kind of containers are you spinning up? 16 GB on an M1 has always been pretty satisfactory for me to develop PHP and Python web apps in their own containers, along with database containers. Everything seems to run pretty quickly. Or are my standards too low?

        • Might scrape through 16gb if you have a small stack.

    • +4

      For me, longevity.

I use photoshop and edit 4k video fairly often and forked out more money to get the higher spec M1 with the M1 Max chip. I know that this will easily last 5-6 years before I even need to consider upgrading, if not more. I consider it a decent investment in that case.

    • +10

Mainly Ozbargain and a little bit of other browsing - currently have 300 Chrome tabs open.

    • +1

I'm sure a decent portion of the market who don't know much about tech just buy it because it's apple and the best but use it for browsing online, at least that's the only type of people I've seen with a Mac. I'm sure a few who develop with it but I haven't seen them because well they are too busy developing.

      • +2

I doubt that non techy market segment buys anything other than an MBA.

    • Nothing. I just carry around to signal status.

      • Does it provide any benefit over a M1 Air for status signalling?

        • +4

          Yes:

          1. It costs more so it has a status point +1 advantage over the air.
          2. It’s heavier so my muscles flex more so I get another +1 over the air.

          Life’s a PVP RPG.

          • -1

@TightLikeThisx: No, because those who look at the Apple laptop to consider your status probably wont recognise anything other than the logo.

    • for netflix

    • I use mine to browse OzBargain.

    • Video editing. Having said that, I spent $1000 on my PC 4 years ago and that is still doing a fine job with Photoshop, 4K editing and games.

      • care to share what is the PC/ the configuration?

    • eye candy

    • +1

You would hope their job. One must be daft purchasing something like this to browse the web.

    • I wondered too, and after a bit of googling (https://qr.ae/pKqz5N):

      • High-performance video editing and 3D rendering.
      • Running multiple virtual machines simultaneously.
      • High-performance data analysis and scientific computing.
      • Running memory-intensive applications such as databases or large-scale simulations.
      • High-end gaming which require a lot of memory to store high-resolution textures and other game assets.
      • Machine learning tasks that require large amounts of data to be loaded into memory for training and inference.
      • High-performance computing (HPC) tasks, such as scientific simulations, computational fluid dynamics, and weather modeling.
      • Cryptocurrency mining requires large amounts of memory for algorithms such as Ethash and Equihash.

Some of those i'd argue are not true, and some of those workloads are better in the cloud these days. I'd also guess that some audio jobs and some large scale engineering modelling might need it. For science, I could imagine lots of data in genomics, weather, geo imaging, etc might be nice on the local computer and local tooling rather than shifting to the supercomputer/HPC and retooling. Still, it is a bit of a mystery for me.

On a side note, if tax deductable you could claim back $1500, say you sell for $1500 after four years and maybe not tell the tax man, then it only cost you $400/yr out of pocket, less that $2 a work day, which is probably economic if a this specific high powered mac makes you work better over the alternatives.

  • -7

    M2… ewww

    • +4

Nothing wrong with the M2 at all. Even the base chip is still great for most applications.

    • +9

If you're talking about M2 Motorway? then yes…. ewww

  • -2

price in title is for 14in BTW

    • +1

      Its the same price.

    • +2

      16" is also $4497

    • +6

      it appears i was incorrect

  • +8

Will ozbargain load faster with this laptop?

    • +3

Not with all the ddos going on :(

    • The deals will be cheaper when ordering through this.

    • Literally what most people are probably buying a laptop like this for. Like all the dual cabs that have never seen dirt before.

  • +3

Guess how much overpriced is this as both 14' and 16' are the same price :)

  • +4

So let me get this straight. Last year's model for this price is a bargain?

    • +3

Good point! Just waiting for someone to link to one of the many alternatives available in this price range.

  • +1

Same RAM/Storage, I would expect 14inch to be cheaper than 16inch. Ideas why its same price?

    • You also get more cores for your GPU. Generally there is like 300-400 dollar different.

  • +5

Not quite as good as that $4k M1 max, 64GB, 4TB deal from last year haha. Doubt we’ll ever see that again. Maybe when the next recession hits, or whole industries are fully replaced by AI.

    • +1

      I’ve got my fingers crossed.

    • +1

That was so good.. I regret not buying it and just selling off my current m1 pro laptop.

      • that's what I did. even now the m1 max / 64gb / 4tb are selling on ebay for ~$5k, USED! (at auction too, so it's a true reflection of market value)

  • Team take note the 14" specs is the binned version, the description is a little misleading (mention the 12-core CPU 38-core GPU version)

  • Wow! $4k for a laptop.

    • +3

just pulled trigger on the M3 Max 14 (non-binned) with 64GB/2TB. Dont ask me how much it was. but for a professional who makes money from the compute and capability of these machines.

it's a worthwhile investment. (What my accountant taught me)

      • Makes sense.

      • why not desktop or two with better specs?

  • Just seems like the main use case for one of these is "For my professional picture/video editing". Like so many people hop onto this value statement when probably most don't even bother with their own pictures / videos, or that the same thing could be done with a PC for 1/4 of the price.

All to justify being robbed by their favourite religion of fruit.

    • -1

that the same thing could be done with a PC for 1/4 of the price

You're straight up lying lol. There are 0 Windows laptops that can do that 1/4 of the price. Even an M1 MacBook Air will outclass whatever device you dreamt up at 1/4 of the price.

      • +2

        Lol. 1/4 of the price = @$1200.

Just look up Ozbargain > Computing > Laptops and plenty of decent stuff for <$1200..

        Xiaomi Ryzen 7 7840HS with 32GB:

        ROG Ryzen 9 with 16GB:
        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/822188

Plenty of other great laptops that has decent dGPU (3050-4060) for another hundred bucks or so (<$1300).

        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/824566
        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/824148

Any one of these will do whatever you think the Macbook can do.

        • +1

Any one of these will do whatever you think the Macbook can do.

Battery life + noise is unmatched lol. Haven't heard my fans spool up at all whilst my XPS sounds like a Jet engine half the time, overheating with shit battery life.

          • @AH: You don’t have to get a dGPU one if you don’t need it.. (not like all Mac users actually do video processing either. LOL). Most of the thin and light stuff in this price bracket ($1200) will be quiet and efficient that will last a work day (9 hours).
BTW. if your XPS is sounding like that - it usually is because your heat sinks are pretty much clogged up with crap. You might need to clean it properly to get a bit more life from it.

            • @bchliu: yea under voted and swapped out thermal paste. tbf dell doesn’t have the best qc track record so ill probably grab a thinkpad next time

              • @AH: I hear ya man.. My Dell G7 is in the same boat with the RTX2070 inside - does overheat when playing games and it is very much the same with previous "gaming laptops" of mine even though I've cleaned it up. To me, the only real gaming machines should be with desktops as laptops just doesn't hold up over time when it comes to thermals and the effort of cleaning it from the dust.

        • Any one of these will do whatever you think the Macbook can do.

Can it run a officially supported install of macOS? No.

Do these manufactures have stores like the Apple Stores where I can get good and quick warranty/repairs? No.

          • @PainToad: Does everyone actually care about using MacOS or not? No.

Do manufacturers have same standard warranties that is required by your state consumer laws for warranties and repairs? Yes

            • @bchliu:

Does everyone actually care about using MacOS or not?

Everyone? No. But lots of people do. But you said "Any one of these will do whatever you think the Macbook can do." which is completely not true.

Do manufacturers have same standard warranties that is required by your state consumer laws for warranties and repairs? Yes

I've dealt with other companies. Getting business to meet their legal obligations can be a pain. Then you've got to send it away. Not comparable to walking into an Apple Store.

  • +4

to those who want the pro without the max, Apple has 14" M1 Pro models 16/512 for $2299 certified refurbished dropped once in a while. I got 16/1TB one for $2539 just before new year. solid machine, more than I need for what I do (photo editing, and video editing 1080p)

similarly specced Airs (13 or 15 inch) approach or even top that price, which is crazy. 14" pro at this price with much better screen, ports, speakers, performance, crushes Airs value wise.

  • +1

Great value! I FT wfh and I can claim 100% of the cost as a tax deduction. Thanks tax payers for your contribution :-)

    • +2

If you are able to salary sacrifice you could get the GST back too that way

  • Two expensive MBP deals in 24 hours, it's a wet dream for all the ozbargainers who get a hard on when commenting to show how superior they are to Apple fan boys.

  • Guys I was about to pull the trigger on an m3 pro from the AOC website - for a M3 pro 16 inch with 1tb 36gb its about 4,500 (after you inlcude the giftcard). So basically the same price as this.

The main purpose of the laptop is music production and i'm pretty sure the max variants do nothing for audio production (ableton/bitwig) and in exchange you just get worst battery life. Am I right in thinking this? This is tempting though at's far better value.

  • My goodness in these kind of tight@ss days, $4.5k can buy a lot of groceries to feed their families instead of a macbook !!!

    • +4

Yeah but people are overweight. Thin your family out buy a max. Save in health costs later down the line from healthy lifestyle.

  • -4

Apple, ahhh ha ha hahaha ha…

  • why wouldnt you get the M3 pro instead at OW instead?

  • +2

Worth the money if you want an excellent machine which will last for years. I got an M1 Max 64gb 4TB and it has been flawless the last two years. The ability to never worry about CPU performance, RAM and on board storage is liberating. I use it 8+ hours per day for work and got it salary sacrificed so in the scheme of things the cost is justifiable.

After 14 years of Apple boy, i am sick of this company. My current Macbook Pro M1 16in and iphone 13 pro max is the last things i would be with them.
Reason: i feel like Apple is controlling my devices, not me. I did not want to update the iphone's software, but somehow Apple got it installed and give me trouble.
My previous Ipad 10.2 Pro is in perfect working condition, except for the battery worn out, they refused to replace it because it over 7 years old.
The most important thing that me and most of the people mistaken about the so called "stability" of Apple computer vs PC was that we did not tinkering as much with macbook than a PC. We can not install alot of games on Apple or all kinds of software like we did on a PC. Most of the time we only use couple of working app on the Apple, and that is…there will not be a big chance we will mess it up like with the PC.
If we did the same with a laptop PC, it will be stable too.

    • +1

Honestly no need to be a “fan” of any brand, simply treat the products as tools. If one tool does what you want and was reliable, then feel free to buy a replacement from the same brand if still value for money. Otherwise there are other options around.

I started using PC in 1991 and Mac in 1992, but not a fan of any brand. I have had numerous branded desktops/laptops over the years and still own HP, Dell, Apple computers. Also owned smartphones from Apple, LG, etc., not tied to any brand. My advice is don’t be a “fan”, buy what’s best for your needs and at best value.

rejoice me mates, Apple Certified Refurbished has restocked $2299 base MacBook Pro 14's with M1 Pro (8c/14c) 16/512

    best value Apple silicon ever.

    https://www.apple.com/au/shop/product/FKGP3X/A/refurbished-1…

    https://www.apple.com/au/shop/product/FKGR3X/A/refurbished-1…

Pro 16 with 10c/16c M1 Pro and 16/512 is $2879 for those who like 16 inchers. These are real desktop replacement, but kinda heavy. I am 14 inch fan myself

  • Thank goodness there is still stock, picked up one space grey today.
After reading through extensive articles and benchmarks and considering my need:
    - Software development
    - ML/LLM learning, still a beginner btw
    - Video editing
This is an amazing deal comparing to the same tier m3 max

for anyone is thinking about the same, especially about its ML/LLM capabilities, please see this blog post https://fabian-kostadinov.github.io/2024/01/16/macbook-pro-f…

for general benchmarking, see this youtube video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aqQtCxLM9hs&t=606s
