I want to start mountain biking in Victoria, would this app be worth getting?

    • +1

The free version will allow you to check out all of the trails in your area. You may not need the subscription unless you want to download maps to be offline etc.

    • +10

Trailforks is more useful for MTB trails. You can get a long way with the free version too.

      • Okay thanks, I have downloaded that also, yet to explore it properly. Just ordered a mountain bike so I'll have to check it out properly. It seems very detailed which is good

    • +1

I’ve actually found Organic Maps (iOS) to be quite good for showing MTB trails. It’s just an app for Open Street Maps but that includes some small locally known trails near me.

Spam alert, once you give them your e-mail address, they will spam your mail box with at least one e-mail per day!

see at the bottom of the email the word 'unsubscribe'…

      Never happened to me.

      • Don’t happen to either iOS user

  • It doesn’t show in the app for me when I go to subscribe. Just says start free trial and then $36

    • I had the same in the app. Logged in on the web and it works.

      • Also shows the full price on the web for me. Targeted?

        • I think you can enter the code "newyear2024" on the web but I couldn't see how to do it on the app.

  • Thanks, was about to buy this the other day but thought I’d wait

  • +3

just use maps.me, can use offline and I find they are pretty good will displaying all the hiking trails

    • I also use maps.me it's been good so far for offline hiking maps has elevation info too. I haven't used alltrails would be interested to know the difference if anyone can comment

      • +1

Have never used maps.me but from a quick look it seems to be a more traditional navigation app which shows a lot of hiking trails.

AllTrails also gives popular hiking/MTB routes which people can review and add photos to, and seems to get updated pretty quickly when sections of trail are closed (though this may just be through crowdsourcing). I've never actually paid for AllTrails as I use my Garmin watch for navigation, but it's my go-to app for planning out hikes or trail runs.

        • How do you get the trails onto your Garmin. I did the free trial for AllTrails and used it to send a bunch of hikes to my Garmin when I went to WA last year (was not necessary as the trails were all very well marked).

          • @cykezero: You need the paid version to export the routes from the app, but with the free version you can download the .gpx file from the website then just upload it on Garmin Connect.

            • @Haydos90: Oh cool. I remember trying a download and it was in some format that Connect did not like. I will try it again. Thanks.

          • @cykezero: You can also find tracks and trails and send them to you Garmin for free in Garmin Connect.
It is in Training and Planning > Courses,

            • @klonky: Thanks, I just had a look and it only seems to allow me to create courses, there's no option to search for trails?

              • @cykezero: In the courses screen there is a little magnifying glass next to the filter button at the top right.

                • @klonky: Ah cool, thanks for that. Didn't have any of the hikes I did in WA, would be good to also search for an area rather than having to manually move the map.

    • Is there an app to find camping sites?

      • +4

        WikiCamps Australia or CamperMate

  • thanks OP, bought through google play, does anyone know if i can cancel my subscription now so i don't forget it next year or would it void it?

    • +2

You can check here: should be able to cancel auto renew and it will retain the sub for the remainder of the year.

      • thanks, cancelled and sub will end next year

    • Yeah you cancel it via Google Play, rather than the app directly

Great deal. I think it still works out cheaper via Türkiye for those who have a Türkiye Apple account already: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/718277

    • +1

I just checked and it shows as 189.99 lira a year which is ~$9.5. Not sure if this is including the half price special as it doesn’t show up on my app

      • Signed up using apple turkey. Installed. Cancelled sub as 7 day trial. Went into subs and found it for 79 lira/year Signed up by email and works on my android now.

        • +3

It showed renew at 189.99 after trial. Cancel that and new option is there under subscriotions

          • @Mikael: i have signed up with apple turkey, do you need an actual apple device at all?

            • @Dealr: Signed up using apple turkey with email. Currently using it on android. It was just the signup using the apple.

    great app

  • I’m going trekking in Nepal later this year. Is this really worth it (I’ll mostly be offline)?

    • +2

Depends where you are going. The app would be suitable for day hikes from city centres, including city walks. If you are venturing into the Himalayas then I don't think I'd be relying on this app (or even your phone for digital maps). Your money would be better spent on official maps and guides.

      • bingo. use local guides mate.

    • Friend hiked in remote Nepal and recommended Pocket Earth (apple only)

    • +1

Unless you are going off trail no.

The trails are well established and targeted to tourists.

    • +2

      Download some sherpas

    • Been there twice for a couple big hikes (Annapurna, Manaslu), been guided/supported however. Nepal as recently implemented a rule where it is mandatory to have a guide now (for which I'm guessing you need to get the permits). So really depends on what you're doing.

  • Currently on a 7 day trial and not seeing an option to just pay and upgrade. Tried cancelling the trial but they're making it difficult to just buy the sub. Any tips?

  • +2

this is pretty good. Used in NZ and utilised the free trail.

100% recommend if you love hiking

  • +1

Where do you enter the code? There’s nowhere in the app, just tries to charge me $36

  • +2

OsmAnd is a good free hiking app.

    • +1

AllTrails has the convenience of searching trails/routes created by others and downloading them for offline use (if you're subscribed).
OsmAnd is a good free alternative as it uses OpenStreetMaps which are downloadable offline and includes trails that are labelled on the maps. You can even create/plan your own custom route which will give you directions, kilometres and elevation. I ended up buying the Unlimited version of this app as it came in very handy during my hikes.

    • Ah I used to use that. I commented above about Organic Maps, which is an iOS equivalent Open Street Map app. Yeah I’ve found MTB trails on it that aren’t that well known. Recommended for free, open source and human community driven (rather than money).

  • Oooh I just did my first trail 3un on Sunday (2 bays trail 28km).
Was fun and considering doing more but don't know a heap about trails. Might be a good option

    • I ran Two Bays on Sunday too! If you use Strava it has heaps of trails you can find in its maps section.

  • Does this show all 4wd off road maps?
Am looking for an app that shows this so can see what the closest ones are to my house

  • Great app, subscription good for offline maps, especially in Seoul

  • +2

Put in comment section as a comment.
If got apple turkey sign up there as 7 day trial and then it is 189.99 lira. Cancel sub and under subs can choose 79.99 lira for alltrails+ ~$4. I signed up using email and working on android.

  • Any similar app that's free to look for Camping sites in Australia?

  • Ok, Bought. Thanks!

Now - can anybody recommend a good pair of hiking boots?

    • +2

Merrell Moab 3 are always good, but alot of people wear trial running shoes too which I think Merrell also have or Hoka/Salomon

      • Anything on the cheaper side from the Anaconda range?

What do you find to be most important in a good hiking shoe? I recently bought some nice running shoes for the first time, and my God, what a game changer! So this is why I ask.

        • Most important thing: try them in person to make sure you got a comfortable fit.
Always try over a thick hiking socks.
Trail running shoes are more comfy & lighter compared to hiking boots, but they won't last. You can get probably ~300 kms from one pair, rarely more.

What apps do people use for bikepacking?

    • +1

I use earthmate from google. Plays nicely with my Garmin Inreach. Gaia GPS is also good. Both have detailed offline maps. Happy to her of others tho
