I have this and it has issues with wireless printing from iOS. it does not work 50% of the time and I have to hold the phone right on top of the touchscreen for it to work.

    • +2

Sounds like you had a faulty one.

      • JV won't buy this printer because it doesn't have fax capabilities.

        • It does fax so you need to come up with another excuse.

        • +2

          Can it do Morse code?

    • What about other iOS devices? Laptops, Android?

      • it is still new. have not tried with other devices yet and I don't have much to print.

    • Doesn't it connect to your Wifi and then to your phone?

      • yes. I use it over wifi. But even after selecting the printer and pressing print, nothing happens. I have to do it again while putting the phone really close to the printer

        • +2

It doesn't make sense you have to put it closer to the printer.

The printer connects to the wireless router and so does your phone.

Your phone doesn't connect direct to the printer (let's ignore NFC for now).

          • @JimB: Exactly my thoughts. Unless it has some sort of direct wifi or bluetooth connection to the phone (which does not seem like a good system).

    • Wireless printing always sucks on everything, especially from phones.

  • +3

Have one too, paid similar price at OW using price beat
No issues here, printing from iOS and Android has been good
Ability to dual scan to Google Drive is a big plus

    • +1

any ideas how to fix the wireless print issue? My firmware is up to date. I googled and I cannot seem to find a solution

      • +2

could be your router, not the printer - as Apple uses Airprint
Sorry no idea, maybe google or chatgpt can help

any ideas how to fix the wireless print issue?

        via warranty claim

      • +1

i'm no networking expert. but when i had connectivity issues with mine, it was related to the encryption used, as the router was super old but still working, newer devices refused to connect to it because those devices probably didn't support whatever the old router was using. maybe try turning off encryption to test?

    • +2

      Does it have auto-duplex scan?

      • +1

        Yes it does

        • +1

          Thanks, just placed an order.

Just to confirm, will it scan both sides of the page without needing to manually flip the page? (Just want to be 100% sure, sorry)

The reason I ask is that I thought only the L2750dw had this feature. If this L2880dw does, then that's brilliant.

          • +2

            @joshptyltd: yes one pass duplex..

I believe the L2880dw is the replacement for the L2750dw

I have the L2750dw. One thing I can fault it for is scanning is someone wonky using the ADF.

          • @joshptyltd: It does, like L2750DW. However, how reliable is the ADF in the long run remains a question mark.
Also, there are no cheap toners for L2880DW yet.

  • It looks heavy.

    • +2

it's not a portable device. it won't break a cabinet sitting on it. does it matter if it weighs 15kg 10kg+?

      • does it matter if it weighs 15kg+?

But I'm strong… Strong enough to carry him…

      🎵 He ain’t heavy, he’s my Brother! 🎵

this has the differences from the much loved 2750

    • L2880DW supports both 2.4 and 5Ghz wifi ( L2750DW is 2.4 only)
    • L2880DW supports scanning direct to email, without the need of a PC
    • bit bigger touchscreen for L2880DW

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/809852

    • My L2750DW supports scanning direct to email

      • +1

Yep seconded, L2750DW has the scan-to-email function already.

Be warned 'non genuine' toner does not seem to be available for this printer. Tried all the big websites for non genuine toner and they only sell OG stuff at HUGE prices.

    • +3

Great point, thanks for sharing. Anyone looking at buying a new printer should first research toner replacement cost.

    • Whats the toner replacement costs on this? given its black and white, i wouldnt assume its expensive and youd get alot out of one toner, i have an inkjet atm and it goes through ink like water.

    • +2

      Interesting.

I'm sure there will be soon an aftermarket toner when they can get the chip to fool the printer. And then Brother will update the firmware…. A game of cat and mouse.

$189 for the 5,000 high yield toner is very expensive.

I'm glad I have the L2750DW. $35 for 3 generic cartridges. Claims 3,000 pages per cartridge but I doubt that. Maybe half that. still good value.

      • Hey mate can you advise where to get generic cartridges for L2750DW? Would like to know if they are reasonable quality the ones you have used

        I have L2750DW

        • You can get them from eBay. Just make sure you don't update the firmware otherwise the printer won't recognise the generic toner chip as genuine.

          • @Excelsior: Too late… I didn't know about firmware updates would prevent me using generic toners I updated last month. So I'm screwed?

            • +1

@neonlight: New generic toner cartridges should be ok.. as I said, a game of cat and mouse.

But I agree don't update the firmware.

I buy from ebay seller YYUDA

              https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/232759713257

He/she has replaced toners which didn't work or wasn't producing clean prints.. been buying from them for years and can't fault the service. I'm not sure if they are the cheapest but $12 a cartridge is still cheap to me.

              • @JimB: Thanks heaps I will give that a go

    • Dam that is a deal breaker, thanks mate !!

New models always take a bit of time before after-market consumables become available. As others have suggested they may be looking at coding the embedded chips to work with the printer so it doesn't recognise them as non-genuine. The trick here is to never update the firmware and/or turn off the auto-update feature. Often then only reason Brother release a new updated firmware is to change the code so it more accurately locks out the after-market toners. You should only need to update firmware if it's absolutely necessary to fix a known problem.

      • Ah I didn't know that already updated on my L2750DW…. So I'm screwed now can't use third party or after market toner cartridges??

        • Not necessarily. You may only need to wait until the non-genuine toners catch up with current FW.

          • @Chazzozz: But you can't find out. The seller won't tell you which firmware the generic cartridges work for? Then it becomes hot trash being unusable

            • +1

@neonlight: All I can suggest is to ask the seller of toners what version of firmware they've verified it against. It's possible not all firmware above the base version will render every 3rd-party cartridge unusable, you may be lucky and have a model that isn't as restrictive. However, I think it's good to be aware when purchasing any new printer these days from any manufacturer. Personally, I think it's just skirting on the edge of legality under Australian Consumer Law since they're not allowed to lock consumers into proprietary consumables, but they'd probably argue that new firmwares are meant to resolve issues and the fact that it also renders non-genuine consumables unusable is Just Plain Bad Luck.

    • I emailed a supplier and they said it will be a few months, so might be soon.

What's the difference between this and the $99 one I just got?

    • what $99 printer?

    • +16

      $164.20

  • Any similar printer without the fax function ?

    • What's the big deal about having the fax function that 99.99% of people won't use?

Removing the fax function will probably save $1.50 manufacturing price and $5 retail price.

      • -1

I have no idea. always assumed with Fax is bulkier.

    • Why not get this one, without the fax. 🤷

    • I think fax function nowadays is more software than the traditional hardware.
You use the scanner to send the fax and use printer to print the fax. The difference will probably be only the port and a tiny modem chip.

    • +4

The really funny thing about this is these days the vast majority of 'faxing' is done electronically anyway, where at either side the document is turned into a PDF and emailed. Bonus points if you email a PDF to an electronic fax service, it's then sent over-the-wire via analogue telephone, then at the other side it converted back to PDF and emailed to the recipient (I'm looking at you Centrelink!).

      • Yes….. and Centrelink will accept a fax but not an email.

But as you say, I can email my e-fax provider who will 'fax' my email to Centrelink.

Thankfully, these days, I can upload PDFs to Centrelink once I'm in the portal.

        • +1

May be not the best solution for Centrelink, but you can upload documents to your MyGov if it doesn't give you the $@#&$.

Posting takes at least up to a month depending on being crunched etc or exceptionally good luck. After arriving in Canberra.

Don't forget to print the fax receipt and or upload receipt, email them to yourself as well.

          • +1

@carrawa: yes I agree fax is rubbish.

I upload via businessonlineservices as we upload stuff for clients. They still sometimes ignore what we upload until we chase them.

  • I'm more interested where to get good quality third party toner cartridges for this machine, at a reasonable price anyone know?

  • Expired?

  • If you already have the 2750DW there's no point in getting this. Also have to wait for third party toners.

    • 3rd party toner I saw on one site is coming 2nd Mar 2024. 3 units for like $90.

  • How fast is the scanning?
