  • +4

Well it's one big yawn so far… how about 40% off all laptops since you need to clear them anyway?!

    • Because of MS Surface, do a 50% all ultrabook and tablet :p

    • They probably will release the information on better deals on Friday to hype people up.

  • +17

YAY I love overpriced batteries and bloated software.

  • +19

No faith in DSE now, their staff must've hidden most of the goodies and check out themselves after open hour.

    • +17

but wouldn't you if you were in the staff's shoes. I would buy all I could get + staff discount!

      • +4

If the staff do their own research first and decide to buy the item themself, that's ok.

The issue is, their staff often hide the goodies AFTER they find out from lots of click and collect reservation that the goodies is actually very cheap and decide to claimed as theirs.
Their excuse is ranging from the following: stock is customer returned item, broken item, incomplete accessories, waiting to be serviced item, etc.

I experience this issue the last time Dick do similar sale as this couple of days ago.
Watch out for staff in Dick Smith Neutral Bay store and Broadway store.

Also, this time Click and Collect service won't be available (according their Facebook post), so it will be even worse…

        • +4

How do you know that those particular stores legitimately didn't have broken stock, or things that are incomplete? I think it is a bit harsh to generalise and make assumptions that most of the staff do that.

        • +2

Would the store actually put non sell-able item (or item known to be faulty/waiting to be returned to supplier) back into the system? What do you think?

For example, one store have 2 item in stock, and refuse to show both of the stock that they advise me as to be returned to supplier.

Another store I mentioned above have 4 item in stock according to the system (checked by staff from other branch).
When I call them straight after I'm finished talking to the other branch, to check whether my item is ready to be collected, the staff advise me that all stock is actually broken stock.
          Go figure…

        • Most stock listings for retailers regardless of whether they are new, broken, returned etc… still show up in the total stock count, because it is still stock. I am assuming unless they have been written off these type of items will come into the total count. Hence 4 in stock might be 1 display, 1 item awaiting repair, 1 item on hold and 1 previously returned item.

        • Running by your logic:
          - 1 display item: It should be still available for sale if it is discontinued item as they no longer need the display unit
          - 1 previously returned item should still be available for sale.
          - 1 item awaiting repair: It should still be available to be shown to me (or sold to me if I want it), as it should still be available onsite.
          - 1 item on hold: should still be available to be shown to me (although it might not be avalable for sale in this case).

So based on above, I should still get at least 1 out of 4 item. While in my case, they still argue that it is not available and I cannot buy it. They even refuse to show any available stock, even the item is not bulky, less than A4 paper in size.

Am I wrong to assume that Dick Smith staff hoarding stock even AFTER client trying to reserve it via Click and Collect system?

        • +2

Agree, I have same experience, click and collect, come to store, a guy told me that there are no more stock, but I saw those items on shelf, and he told me (while look down to the floor, avoid eye contact) that those stock is for transferring to other store!!! I am really mad a that time! That why dick go down in no time.

        • +1

Before the days of OB, I used to travel from Hobart to Cairns checking for old stock in DS/Tandy. I would make an offer & sell it on. Got to know that stock listed in the store's system almost always was not stock on hand.

To start with there is the matter of theft. Small popular items do walk our the door. No stock system can take that into account. I have seen staff dumping damaged stock or transfering to another store stock without accounting for it on the system.

Many items listed were returns or display stock - missing power supplies, instructions, parts, boxes, or did not work. They were dumped & forgotten our the back. Some stock had been set aside for customers & simply never got returned to the shelf. No one took responsibility, and the stock remained on the computer for years after it was last seen.

I have bought stock that did not appear in their system (managers loved offloading those for almost nothing); or it had an alternative stock numbers (eg Remmington hair cutting set for $2, instead of listed under its new code at $30 for same item!).

Stock-taking should account for discrepancy, but that's in a perfect world. One manager of a small store had so much phantom stock I rang DS HQ, got an appology & a nice gift!

          Real world realities:
          DS stock system is inaccurate.
Stock can be misplaced/lost & some staff never seem to know where obvious items are.
Stock is not always available in that store.
Some staff will put aside stock you want (possibly for themselves or someone who rang up & convinced them to hold it for them - as I have done many times).

Any trader has the right / responsibility not to sell or display goods not of merchandisale quality. Expecting a trader to show you such stock (especially during a 1 day sale) is going beyond normal business operations.

That has been what I found out through knowing DS managers & dealing with stores over many years. Its not theory. And I have a reputation for saying when service is terrible - I have a current defamation threat for an online critism of a business last year.

          Last XXXL 1 day sale in May got 0 '-' & 50 '+'
And there is no 'click n collect' this sale.

        • Real world realities:

          • The items that people were after were the PSPs/DS's/DSi's which are all locked in a cabinet in all stores to prevent their theft.
          • If someone steals a PSP or a DS, you are probably going to pick up on it because there will be shattered glass on your shop floor.
          • If you have sh** organisation of the products, perhaps it is best you don't advertise availability to begin with.
          • You have to question the competency of the staff if they can't raise forms for DOA.
          • You have to question the competency of a store manager if he has missing parts/lost manuals for products that come with factory seals.

It sh**s me that you are still playing a game of who can lie the most convincingly, instead of saying "Yes we f***ed up, we released a massive list and our staff members took it all and we apologise… Please give us another chance".

          Take some ownership.

          Ta

        • Only saying what I have experienced. Know what it is like to anticipate great purchase, only to have my hopes dashed by DS's poor stock systems.

A trader has the right not to sell an item for any reason. Similarly you do not have to buy from that business.

I took a legal case against a business chain for refusing to sell me their service. The business settled before the court case. I could only win by showing the trader discriminated against me under the Queensland law (but not Federal). If they simply refused for no reason, my case would have never proceeded.

By the way I don't have anything to do with a poorly organised business like DS! Only go in the door if I am desperate for a bargain at a genuine sale, or curious to see what rubbish is on the bargain table.

Hopefully new owners will revamp their stock & staff systems.

(Sounds like you want this type of experience:
Had a store in Japan line up its staff, bowing & apologising for a $5 error in my grocery bill.)

        • -1

Did anyone else also see the pattern here?
Most of the people which are happy with this deal is actually Dick Smith staff and unhappy people is us buyer from the other side.
Maybe this deals is only relevant for Dick Smith staff and not for us a mere mortal?

        • +1

          Cheeky bugger :) No
(My $69 phone crashed & when I got back to OB I was tagged as a 'rep' - you just can't trust what the computer says! )

To state the obvious - we all have different shopping experiences.

There were no negs for the last XXXL sale & 50 pluses.
That is a better guess of how that sale went, and may be a better predictor of how good this sale might be.

As I've posted below, I was happy with the last XXXL sale in May. Went to store at 2pm & was surprised that almost everything I wanted was available. As the MS headset was opened, I asked for & got it much cheaper - so $170 (RRP) for 95c after cashback. They even rang the nearest store to hold 1 item. Next store even swapped headset for new one at double discounted price. Can't see why I wouldn't be happy with that?

(Still getting used to the random text produced by predictive text keyboard)

        • Geez dude that was a random example. I have no idea what happened to your beloved item on that particular day, there could have been 4 items that had just been stepped on for all I know. I just think people take these things way too seriously and whinging annoys me. And yes you are wrong to assume that Dick Smith staff are hoarding stock even if it has been click and collected without proof.

  • +4

A bit hard-pressed extracting information from Dick? Looks like Dick is leaking these deals in a trickle.

  • +12

I introduced a friend to this site; just had that friend call me telling me I send them a site with discounted on Sex Toys… I was wondering what's going on. Than i realize shes seeing "Dick's XXXL Sale" she must have though XXX as in sex, and dick's as in……. ahahahahahah

    • She wants XXXL …. lol

    • +30

Ohhh… but their marketing department means that. Just look at the rest of the ads: http://textfail.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/72.jpg

I think Dick's marketing team need to reduce the length… of their contract.

      • +1

Oh wow, I never noticed that!! Man, Dick Smith has so much innuendo on their campaigns!!!

      • +2

That link is really funny. Marketing genius.

        Keep it up Dick!

      • Brilliant. Love it.

  • So many batteriesssssssssssssssssss

  • +7

I have absolutely no intentions of making an effort for this sale. It's not that I'm pissed off with DSE employees, I would have done the exact same thing in their position.
You just can't beat employees who can give themselves priority. :)

  • It seems the only thing spoiling Dicks sales are its own sales people.
Hope someone high up from DSE watches this thread.

  • Battery Sale?

    • Yes, it will give you more stamina. It didn't really work well for their finances. :S

  • +19

I Highly recommend Norton anti-virus even if it does cost a bit extra. Using Norton ensures I never get a virus when using my netscape navigator gold.

    • -2

Zone alarm gives 100% malware and virus free

    • -1

Are you being sarcastic? Microsoft Security Essential> Norton plus it free provided your window id code is legit.

      • -4

Avast is better than MSE from my experience. Faster, better, harder. This, and a lot of other commercial software I've used seems to perform better than MSE in terms of picking up malware.

Even the founder of MalwareBytes reckons MSE is fairly mediocre.

Whoever negged me, should probably read some of the comments on Reddit. Microsoft was never made to be a security software company. They most likely do not have a division made specifically to support or develop anti virus software or upkeep it's malware definitions. Most likely they purchase or outsource the development to another company (i.e. Sophos)

      • +6

Yeah it was sarcasm, hence the "netscape navigator" reference.

MSE might be better than nothing, but it's still hopeless. And because it's an MS product (ie: common), a clever piece of nastyware would know how to disable it.

Pick a decent one. avcomparatives.org (from memory) is useful.

        • +5

I dont know why people think I am being sarcastic.

Norton is handsdown the best when it comes to picking up virus' from websites that I get linked to from altavista, lycos, and ask-jeeves. I also use it to scan every file I get sent through ICQ and it hasn't failed me yet.

Keep up the good work guys!

    • Netscape? Are you still running software from 1999?

      • +2

        Whoosh.

  • +11

Based on my past experience, I can imagine lining up just to find out everything is 'out of stock' or 'in another branch with limited stock'

    • +1

If Dick Smith really want all those batteries and copies of Norton 2011 they can have em

  • +3

The Microsoft virus checker is free and good enough.

  • waiting for big sale on ultrabooks, just be patient!

  • +11

Even if the Norton was 100% off, I wouldn't want it!

  • Cd-keys for virus scanners are cheap as on ebay.

  • +1

Dick Smith specials are a lot like Officeworks specials. Short and pointless.

Also, what the hell does "may not be available at all stores" mean? Neg for ambiguity.

    • +2

It means that physical stock is store dependent. Which, obviously, it is.

    • +1

Also, what the hell does "may not be available at all stores" mean?

Translation: "Will not be available at any stores"

  • +17

30% Off Norton and Trend Software

    LOL, that's still 70% too much !!!

  • -2

far out, so many people still butthurt because they expected to actually find a PSP for $20

    • +6

People did find them… they were just behind the counter.

  • +2

Stay tuned for more reveals tomorrow!

For their sake, I hope so. The current 'deals' are barely worthy of a mention - if the best they can muster for a 'sneak peek' is batteries and antivirus software, I wouldn't get my hopes up.

  • +1

I don't know why they bother with anti-virus software. I remember when COD had their last mystery item and it was anti-virus software… so many people asked for a refund. Simply put, MSE has solved the anti-virus conundrum for most people. Who says a monopoly can't be good?

    • +2

Who says a monopoly can't be good?

Off the top of my head, I would have to say the people being crushed by it.

    • Who says a monopoly can't be good?

If a company has a monopoly, that means no competition.
No competition means no product innovation because there's no incentive to make it better. Consumers lose as a result.

    • Lack of competition = good?

Look at the price of petrol :P

(I'm not saying there are not multiple separate companies, just that what they do seems to remove all competition from the field of automotive petrol prices in Victoria, possibly elsewhere)

  • +1

I was happy with the last XXXL sale
    http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/70725

    It started with similar deals

    Deals already revealed:
    50% off DSE Batteries
    30% off Energizer Batteries
    1.5m HDMI Cables $10 for 2

    Offers were added daily including:

    15-50% off a range of electronics -
15% off Apple - not iPad, Up to 30% off laptops, 30% off GPS,
40% off portable DVD players, MP3s, Networking
50% off DS memory cards, TV antennas, cables, etc
    SD STBox for $5 LOL!

Bough $170 (RRP) of MS gear for 95c after cashback.
Plenty of stock & helpful staff.

(Just don't mention the games sale!!!)

    • +2

I'm still rocking that $2 answering machine :)

      • +2

A lot of my purchases from that sale are still in the boxes. The prices were too good to refuse.

Using the $2 100 Led solar light sets for the solar powered rechargable batteries - in Cree torches. Not to mention the handy $2 Remington groomers & $2 hair cutting sets, $2 landline phones & fittings, a/v cables, etc… So many great deals from DS last time.

At the DS stores I went to the staff were surprisingly helpful, even finding stock from our the back. But it seems no one wants to believe! They just remember the games sale fiasco. The XXXL sale was offerent.

But the mob is out for blood.
I will be negged for saying something positive from my experience of it. LOL!

    • 50 '+' & no '-' for last DS XXXL SALE!

  • Not again. Never again. DSE can eat it.

Then again if you want to actually buy Norton and destroy your computer you kinda deserve it.

    • +5

Come on now. Everyone loves a big dick … smith sale.

  • -1

    What about black guys???

    • +1

      Disliked by the white guy

      • I can only imagine what you are talking about :P

  • +9

Heres the total listing of markdowns for the xxxl sale, this is besides what other instore deals will be running during the sale. I am a staff member and went through the point of sale for the sale to take note of these markdowns, was going to post it yesterday but didnt want to jump the gun too early before the company had released at least some of the markdowns

    20% off mobile phone cases
20% off sony olympus and nikon digital cameras & sony camcorders
40% off logitech computer and gaming accessories
10% off pre-paid mobile phones, mobile broadband and recharges
    50% off dick smith batteries
30% off Norton and trend software
30% off gaming titles 59.95 and under (uh oh another gaming sale)
    50% off memory cards
50% off antennas, DS wallmounts and DS av senders
40% off headphones (excluding beats, pioneer and apple from memory)
40% off microsoft mice, keyboards, headsets and webcams
    25% off camera accessories
    30% off energizer batteries

So yeah on top of that should be some instore deals and specific product markdowns, if I find more ill comment it here. hope you guys just get to see my comment in time. Also as a bit of a note, Any staff member caught keeping stock out back will be reviewed and staff are not allowed to purchase any item until their lunch break on the day. They are fairly touchy and strict on this after the fiasco that was the gaming clearance, but IMO most of that hype was over the leaked list misleading people, making expectations of 1000 cheap xbox's when there was like 2 per area. ANYWAYS, Ill post new stuff as I am informed and Ill see some of you guys there saturday morning! happy bargaining!

  • It's already discounted yesterday…
I went into Burwood yesterday, half price glitter eneloops…
However, I didn't touch the external HDD because frankly that's overpriced.

    • +1

The eneloops are part of the latest catalogue specials, check this deal.

  • Anyone know if PSN Cards are included?

    • i would like to know the same on xbox live cards.
but they probably not included as most places dont class them as accessories

      • 1500 points is 2 for 40 (save 10) apart from that, no card sales soz guys

  • +1

Got excited about 50% off memory cards, checked prices, a standard 32GB Sandisk SDHC at 50% off Dick Smith prices is still more than twice as expensive as buying it at MSY.

    • +1

Their Logitech gaming accessories are also quite expensive, I find. There might be a few standout items, but overall, I would have to call this sale a dud.

    • Did the XXXL make you excited?

  • Looking for a 32" TV, no crummy brands (cough cough Vivo cough cough) what do you think about heading down tomorrow?

  • -1

A percantage off sale is usually percentage off RRP which is a con not a "sale".
If they truly have bargains then have the guts to state the prices.
    What a farce.

  • Not that interesting, but might get a new TV antenna at $71 (50% discount off $149 plus 5% off with ING PayWave or RACQ Woolies Gift Card discount). Thats better than trade price. DS usually only put the lesser $129 one on sale, which is not suited to my location. http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/70154

  • Is Sony ps vita memory card a Sony memory card?

  • would be better if all gaming accessories were included and not up $49.95.

and it would have been good to tell us when the online started, and not just put it on at any time

  • XXXL is a massive anti climax sale.

  • Just priced matched the LG 55LM6410 that Dick Smith had for 30% off at Harvey Norman Norwest. Even saved 80 cents.
$1325 - Best price i have ever seen for this model and i have been tracking it for a while. Looks so good in my lounge room.

    http://dicksmith.com.au/product/GE2032/55-quot-139cm-full-hd…

  • Apparently things already on sale are excluded. Even if you search on the DSE website and they're listed in the "30% off x" category in the search results. Dick Smith trollin'.

  • -1

Dishonored (PC) for $38 is a pretty good deal. Also Doom 3: BFG is $35 for console and $25 for PC.

  • I'm stoked, got a Toshiba Z830/001 ultrabook for $769. Best price I've seen, ever, on one with decent specs and ports.

    • I know this is Ultrabook, it's 1.1kg, but seriously, $769 is good price for spec like this?

2nd Gen CPU, 128GB mSATA(not cheap to upgrade), only 1 x USB3.0, biggest lost is ram which is Maximum 6GB…

      • Depends what you're after - for this size, yes. Check out the general ultrabook prices and you'll see what I mean. And most of them don't even have the number of ports this one does.

Obviously if I wasn't bothered about size, I could get a much better specced notebook for that price… it's all about priorities. ;)

  • Purchased Twisted Metal for the PS3 for $28. Good deal IMO.

  • nothing much finds in store, a lot of people there,
but the items are not good bargain unless you really need them

I think last sale was better, such as the $2 DVD+-R and other $2 stuff, those are called: BARGAINs!

Got them. They are awesome for the price and have that premium feel that is normally only available in more expensive ones.

    Q is this phone 3g?
A let me see. It has WIFI.
    Q is this phone 3g?
A it comes with Android so it must be.

    See you later, experts.

    • This is why you should employ experts rather than techxperts.

    • +2

Why don't you do your own research before buying.
