  • Is i5-1340P a good upgrade from 1165g7?

    • Better in every way except for integrated graphics

      https://laptoping.com/cpus/product/intel-core-i5-1340p/

      • how much performance increase would I expect? 20-30%?

    • yes

    • +3

Noticeable +20% single thread and +50% multi thread performance boost

However, not worth upgrading just for the CPU unless the other key features - OLED, Thunderbolt 4 and newer/larger battery - are useful for your use case

      • I currently have a Dell Latitude 3420

        • What is your purpose for upgrading? What features are you currently missing in the Dell that you feel you need?

          • -5

@Look Up: Nothing, the dell is fine. I just feel the need for speed.

I want my excel, windows explorer folders, browser tabs to open more quicker and snappier

            • +2

              @Homr:

I want my excel, windows explorer windows, browser tabs to open more quicker and snappier

Get any laptop that supports upgradable RAM, install 64GB RAM, upgrade to a Gen 4 SSD and run Windows without a swap file

  • +1

Okay serious question. This or Samsung Galaxy Tab S9+ as portable/travel computer and lightroom/photoshop device for processing power and portability.

    • +2

      This.

    • Hands down, this. Windows is way more versatile.

Formfactor-wise, you can prop this up into tent mode, hang it over the back of a chair, etc. Quite often, I unfold it 180 degrees flat, prop it up on my torso and watch things on it in bed.

      • You mean, your knees right?

        • +3

No, he has a mirror on the roof

    • I found Lightroom to be a very shortcut-heavy app, particularly when sorting through dozens or hundreds of photos. I’m not sure if the Android version has improved, but I’d at least run through some videos on YouTube to see if the user interface suits your workflow.

Also depends on where and how you’re travelling. Do you need slim and compact, or can you get by with lugging a laptop out of your bag and opening it up on your lap or seat tray.

I might have scoffed at that price for an Android tablet, which I usually associate with media consumption and casual gaming. That said I do have an M1 iPad Pro, which is at the same price point, and I have had success using it with the Magic Keyboard for office and productivity purposes while travelling.

YMMV, but I certainly wouldn’t rely on a tablet as a sole device, unless you have access to remote desktop.

  • Anything similar in an amd low power consumption bracket?

  • For comparison, same one configured from Lenovo direct is $1558.
(can upgrade to 2.8k 90Hz, also OLED screen, for extra $50)
    Education store is $1322.10

  • I was considering it for my kid but stopped after reading comments about screen door effect

    • Whats screen door effect?

      • +1

Probably referring to the touchscreen digitiser.

I've got one with the same screen, it's there but it's really not that bad imo (the photo from linked thread is super close up), I'm fine with the trade-off for touch functionality but I can see how it could annoy some people though.

Could always go check one out at JB Hi-fi or whatever to see if it's likely to bother you.

      • From Google:

visual anomaly that appears in virtual reality (VR) displays, especially in head-mounted displays (HMDs). It is characterized by a visible grid-like pattern of fine lines or gaps between pixels on the screen, resembling a screen door.

  • +2

How is battery life on this?

    • I'm interested too. Need to replace my Thinkpad X1 Carbon Gen 3.

  • Very good deal.
But I may still wait until the intel ultra releases - 14th dec. The 12th and 13th intel CPU power consumption is really annoying.

    • +1

The 12th and 13th intel CPU power consumption is really annoying.

The "Intel 4" 7nm process is still one gen behind TSMC 5nm in Zen 4

Further complicating cores into 3 types - Performance, Efficient and now Low Power - guarantees a poor launch

Intel will need to rewrite the schedulers for Windows and Linux plus account for all the real world edge cases with games, media encoding etc

Intel CPU's will not compete with AMD until 15th Gen when the tile process, Arc iGPU and scheduler are all prime time

      • Intel's which gen is gonna come from TSMC fab ?

        • +1

Parts of 14th Gen are already from TSMC:

          CPU tile - Intel 4
          GPU tile - TSMC N5
          SoC tile - TSMC N6
          I/O tile - TSMC N6
Tile connector - Intel Foveros 22nm

The main CPU tile is still Intel 7nm which is why power consumption and heat still lag Zen 4

  • These hinges aren't going to last.. :\

    • +1

Not sure about these ones, but the ThinkPad X1 Yoga's are nigh indestructible. Kids play with mine (gen 3), and it's been fine. And they're pretty rough with it.

      • Thinkpads are business grade, this is not.

        • Yeah even with ThinkPads I would be cautious, had my hinge break after turned out it was screwed into plastic.

    • I was going to buy until I researched about the hinge issue. I can't see my son taking care of the laptop without breaking the hinge. Think I'll keep looking for alternatives. https://www.reddit.com/r/Lenovo/comments/x1wq2d/my_yoga_7i_h…

  • Are there any laptops with similar specs without the touch screen?

    • Yoga Pro 7 or 7i?

  • Is this the one with cntrl key misplaced?

    • Not from the images?

  • i bought the HP one in this deal https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/815518 . havent opened it yet so technically can be returned. for normal day to day use no gaming. Offic work and browsing is this lenovo one better than HP?

    • +1

No difference in performance. It’s more about the OLED screen, touch, convertible and taste etc. I would pick your HP for that price any day as I always hook up an external monitor.

      • Isn't the 1340P better than i5-1335U?

        • Yes on paper no in reality, not to mention OP’’s light officework usecase. There is no app that 1340P will perform substantially better than 1335U so performance isn’t really the factor for decision.

          • @NoBargainNoLife: thanks guys! i'll stick with the hp one, i dont really need 2-1 and touchscreen, only thing which was bothering me was will the I5 be good enough for 5 years and 256 GB SSD, other than that HP quality is fairly good in my experience

    • +1

I would choose Lenovo over HP any day. hp quality is mediocre vs Lenovo

      • Only if it’s a Thinkpad. I have seen many yoga and even thinkbook failed so not much quality difference comparing to consumers grade HP.
And don’t forget OP’s HP is $400 cheaper…that’s a big deal if OP doesn’t need the 2-1 convertible functions

  • This now or hold for boxing day?

    • Unless your holding a glove, go for this and return it (onepass) if you find a better deal

      • Was a bit of mess last month when I paid with 3rd party GCs (5x) and tried to exchange/reorder (to change the name on the receipt) the staff weren't quite happy as the receipt was kinda messy. The store manager came and could only offer a refund into OW GC which could take 5 days. Suggested I call the CS but nothing much they could do either. I gave up at the end.

    • Boxing day will be a scam just like Black Friday. If I was looking I would go for it.

      • Last year Intel offered $50 on Evo CPUs while HN offered 10% store credit from my memory. Not sure about this year.

  • +1

I dont usually go for extra warranty, but i did in this case to offset the risk of the hinges. Thanks OP, i needed a laptop i could bring to client meetings

Can you please warzone 2.0 on it?

  • +1

    There is a similar i7 version - https://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/lenovo-14-…
Would it be worth the extra $200?
Also, does anyone know whether the addtional warranty be purchased from Lenovo directly after the purchase from Officeworks?
    Thanks in advance.

    • +1

very little difference between the i7 and i5 version, only about 10%
      Not worth the $200

  • "We are currently reviewing your order. Given the current demand, you may experience a delay in receiving an order confirmation."

Oh man hope there's still stock at the location i selected. Payment has gone through already :/

  • +1

Would prefer this, specs-wise from OW as AMD Ryzen Phoenix - https://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/acer-swift… for $997
No pen, touch or USB/TB 4 but picks up much better GPU, AI, battery life and cheaper

    • +1

I would rather pay more than use Acer.

  • -2

    Ram only 16GB

    • It's plenty for most things. I can run lightroom without any trouble on 16GB.

      • 16GB is OK for now but may not after 3 years. Prefer to pay more to get a model that can upgrade to 32GB

  • For a kid school use, what would be a good price range laptop to go for?

    • +1

For a kid I recommend getting a sub $400 8th gen like this one

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/817756

      • +1

I second this. Both my kids (Year 8 and Year 3) have ex corporate Dells (7490 or 7410) and I upgraded the RAM to 16GB on both and for one also put in a new battery (if you're patient and OK with a screwdriver).

I find the ex corporate Dells/HPs have sturdier hinges than the newer Acers/ASUS and can survive some kind of drops. That said if the kids bust them I can either fix them (lots of parts available) or just get another one.

Schools these days aren't pushing the capabilities of modern laptops as alot of the work is on Google and browsers. These run those sort of things just fine. Unless the kids are doing heavy video editing (rare) then even the photoshop and MS Office works just fine on these (those care more about the underlying RAM than the speediest CPU).

        • +1

I think those 8th gen intels are more than enough for professional use case still too. I needed a windows device (have a maxed out m1 as well, but parallels just wasn’t cutting it), so I bought a thinkpad t480 with 16gb ram for $320. The laptop is a beast. 4 cores 8 threads.

I prefer using it over my MacBook these days, even for personal use. Sure the MacBooks got a better display, trackpad and audio setup, but otherwise the thinkpad holds its own. I primarily run excel, PowerPoint and a bit of r, the thinkpad smashes these out.

My MacBook is the air and it heats up running parallels. It also heats up when I connect it to a 4K display too. It doesn’t have active cooling so you’re limited by thermals. My thinkpad has not heated up whilst connected to the display. The fans only become active when I launch an application for the first time, which lasts about 10-15 seconds and then it’s just as silent as my m1, but significantly cooler.

Plus, I can place the m1 in a flat position and turn the laptop screen off and use the thinkpad keyboard as my primary input device. The nipple is hard to move on from once you’re used to it.

P.S. highly recommend picking up a refurbed business class laptop from 8th gen intel onwards.

          • @theangrywaffle: Thanks y’all. Will hold out for a cheaper one. Don’t think a fancy one will last past the six months mark.

Would a yoga slim or thinkpady or think book be more sturdy/ durable for kids nowadays?

            • +1

@LurvinOZB: The thinkpad line is quite durable and would be really easy to source parts for. If you want a slimmer device, the x1 carbon gen 6 is great value. I’ve got the t480 as it has more customisable parts, they’re roughly the same price these days. If you want a bit of both, the t480s is also great.

Just watch out as the thinkbook from what I remember are not as well built as thinkpads. I think it’s Lenovos scheme to trick people into thinking they’re well built machines like the thinkpads. I may be wrong but I’d definitely read more into it regarding their reliability.

Moving away from the thinkpad series, I would highly recommend a HP elite book. I was using one for work last year with 8th gen intel in it too. They’re built a little more like macs with a more premium feeling chassis and better screen than the thinkpad. Plus the trackpad was slightly better.

I can’t really speak for dell laptops. Haven’t owned a dell laptop and haven’t really had the opportunity to try one out properly.

When I walk into jb, I always tinker with the laptops to see how tech is coming along. Honestly anything less than $1500 feels realllly cheap and flimsy. Not very well made machines that are in my opinion e-waste.

I would 100% prefer a 6 year old high end business class laptop from Lenovo or hp over a new windows laptop that’s not business class. But again that’s my personal preference and some people just prefer shiny new devices.

            • @LurvinOZB: I have experience with the Elitebooks and the Lenovos. I find the Yoga 370 is a good one. Screen is good, get 5 hours from the battery at least and can still max the RAM out (16 GB, but I think some people have gotten 32 GB to work, officially maxes at 16GB if you don't want to try).

Even my really ancient Lenovo (E531 ~2013) runs Win11 with 16GB RAM. It's a big screen model (16") so heavy but with a 3rd Gen Intel Core I7 (4 cores/8 threads) holds its own even now. Only the screen is washed out (not broken, just not as bright as the current and last few years). What I really like about the older laptops is that they still came with replaceable batteries, socketed CPU (yes on a laptop), 2 RAM slots, and even mini-PCI, M.2 Sata in some cases so you can even have multiple physical storage drives.

Thinkpad are good if you look at the better models (X1, T480, T490). Lenovo does this trick in current gen where the specs except the display are good.

I think around the $400 price point you get a lot of quality in most brands in the used market.

  • Anyone can recommend this vs. Macbook air M2 8GB for a high school student? Macbook is 50% more cost.

    • -1

      This.

they will eventually drop and damage it anyways.

    • I'd suggest the base M1 air for $1290 on the AOC store, unless they particularly want a PC

  • +1

Isn't oled bad for win, with the static taskbar etc?

    • I have the same question here.

  • I'm going to wait for ryzen 7 gen of thinkpads (pref 13" oled) to come out at roughly this price before I pull the trigger
