    ps compatible?

  • +4

    Great deal

Stack with the 6% off GCX gift card deal for a final price of $120.83

  • Would heatsink be necessary in laptop (non gaming - some CAD and music production?
Not sure I would have the space for heatsink

    • +1

Nah you'll be fine, high IOPS is what generates heat but CAD and Music production is all in RAM. Even most people gaming wouldn't necessarily need a heatsink

      • My Samsung T5 SSD can become hot to the touch even on read.

    • Would heatsink be necessary in laptop

      No

Not sure I would have the space for heatsink

Most laptops cannot fit an SSD with heatsink installed

Newer drives have thin graphene heat spreaders that do fit and are much better than the sticker on the P5 Plus

If you are not continuously writing GB sized files, you will have not have an issue

    • My 1TB Samsung 980 PRO M.2 NVMe gets pretty warm in an ORICO USB 3.2 Gen 2 M.2 NVMe SSD Enclosure, NVMe PCI-E enclosure (that has built in heatsink)…
And I only use it to watch vids on my smart tv (though up to very large HQ 4K)

If it won't break the bank, it certainly won't hurt.
      Just thought i'd mention it.

    • I wouldn't use this one in a laptop. This thing runs quite hot and could thermal throttle in a laptop since there’s very limited airflow.

Waiting for Crucial or Lexar 4TB deal

  • Hrmm 1tb 990 or 2tb p5 plus

  • Thinking of putting it in a external case to use as an external drive anyone got a recommendation for an external case?

    • +2

ORICO M.2 NVMe SSD Enclosure, https://amzn.asia/d/32q9srA

      • Thanks for that! The drive goes 5GB a sec and the max speed of the enclosure is 10Gb so that will limit speed to 1.2GB a sec right? If i paid more to get a 20Gb enclusure will that actually work at that speed or is the “2x2” deisgn limit the actually speed to 10Gb anyway .. do you happen to know?

        • Yes it will limit top speed. It may still perform better than other lesser drives due to random read write, but I am not an expert tbh. (And the difference definitely won’t be huge)

To get a 2X2 drive, you have to be absolutely sure the device you intend to use also supports it. I say this because it is rare for devices to support 2X2. You might be better of going TB but yeah they are expensive (and the sabrent one uses an old controller and isn’t even backwards compatible with USB 3.2)

          • @Larsson: Yeah i got a mac m1 but i dont want to pay the premium for something that has the word apple or thunderbolt on the box haha!

Just looking at the specs .. i guess no 2x2 for me .. would have to be USB 4?

            https://support.apple.com/kb/SP823?locale=en_AU

            USB 4 (up to 40Gb/s)
            USB 3.1 Gen 2 (up to 10Gb/s)

            • @theeventhorizon: This is exactly why I commented, because I had a feeling you had a Mac from what you were trying to do!

Yes my friend, unfortunately Mac’s don’t have 2X2.

As i said, cheapest enclosure is Sabrent one. it is really fast but it is an old Intel chip and it’s not compatible with USB 3.2.

Alternatively, you can look at ACASIS from their own website. Don’t buy it from Amazon. They are way more expensive there. But yes, they are generally expensive.

What exactly are you trying to do? Why do you want a fast enclosure?

              • @Larsson: Want not need haha .. these drives are fast so just wondering what id need to pay to get an external drive at full speed or close ..

Looks like about 150$ for usb 4 enclosure. I think today ill get just usb 3.1 10gps and then one day when usb4 becomes cheaper i can upgrade.

                • @theeventhorizon: Haha same boat my friend. I really wanted it. Not like the time I transfer files are so precious and I do it so often that I absolutely needed but I just wanted it.

I have the asus one 3.2 that was recently on sale here too, I got the sabret TB3 and I got the ACASIS.

And I also have a ton of different drives too. So let me know if you have any questions.

                  • @Larsson: Just in case im missing something.. simple question.

Other than payong 150$ ish theres no enclusure i can buy to make it go faster than 10 Gbps on my mac m1?

                    • @theeventhorizon: Nope, not that I know of unfortunately. There are only a handful of chips that can do speeds past USB3.2, and they are all expensive…

                  • @Larsson: I'm hoping to run Parallels from an SSD with enclosure from my M1 2020 8GB MBP, would this SSD be a good choice for this purpose if I buy the right enclosure + heatsink?

Also looking for a 2GB or 4GB SSD + enclosure as additional backup option which I'm guessing might not require the same specs for an enclosure? Have been looking into this for months but bamboozled by all the options at this point. Thanks

                    • +1

@claireDT: ah don't know about parallels unfortunately but does seem like it benefits from speed? if so, yes this is still great for the price.

The thing is external enclosure really limits most of SSDs capabilities, but it's still somewhat important. Without knowing the enclosure-ssd combo it's hard to say anything specific but the short answer is: this is one of the better ones for that and price/performance wise @ $128 probably the best one. So I'd say go for it. I don't believe there is a better SSD than this with 2TB until around $170-180.

  • +1

    got one, tyvm.

  • So I know this works with ps5 but as a not very tech savvy person, how recommended is it to have a heatsink on this if I'm using it for ps5 storage? And how does this compare to other ssds out there that are also ps5 compatible? Thanks in advance!

    • It is highly recommended to use a heatsink, otherwise your PS5 may crash. This drive exceeds the minimum spec Sony recommends for NVMe drives (5,500 MB/s read) so it is more than compatible. Enjoy!

    • +1

PS5 hammer SSDs so they need a heatsink..

Xbox and ps5 us the SSD more then a PC in general day to day use when gaming

      • +2

can you link an example heatsink that this would require? do they just clip on?
i'm aware i can google but thought i'd just ask for personal advice here first from people who have experience doing it/buying a heatsink etc. ty for your time

        • I just used generic copper plates/thermal pads (both from ebay) and applied onto the side with the chips.

  • +1

And here xbox is selling 1tb for 250

  • +2

Would this be a reasonable drive for booting? my preliminary searches reckon so.

    • Yeah perfect for it, I got one a couple of months ago for my boot drive and has been solid.

    • Came here to say same….! Gets it down to a few bucks over $100….

    • Would this still be eligible if it ships from Amazon UK + sold by Amazon UK? Even though it's purchased via Amazon AU?

      • +1

Yes, per first comment on the deal link shared by Chimpus.

        • +1

nice, thanks for pointing that out.

  • Hi all - my daughter runs an Asus ROG STRIX G15 G513QR-HF080T R7 5800H laptop with a spare M.2 PCIe 3.0 SSD slot. Does anyone have any guidance about whether this would suit that machine? Thinking about PCIe 3.0 vs 4.0, and whether 2TB would be above some kind of limit for that machine. Thank you to anyone with knowledge to share.

    • It just wont run at 4.0 speeds.
      memory size wont impact anything.

    • Look for a cheaper Crucial P3.

  • This vs the T500?

    • +2

Well T500 performs better. It does have a known issue with sustained write speeds plummeting when the SLC cache is used up which for the 2 TB model happens after at least 100 seconds which at an average of 6.4 GB/s is around 640 GB so it's unlikely to be a major issue unless writing a lot of stuff, still something to note and hopefully can be fixed with a firmware update.

The question is whether the extra performance is worth the extra $50~ for the T500, in my opinion not really for average home user where both drives would realistically be more than enough. Personally I just jumped on the $175 deal for the T500 last night before this one came up, if I knew this was coming though I'd have likely waited for to get this instead (I guess I could still cancel my T500 since it hasn't shipped and get the P5 but at this point I'm not fussed over it).

Another question is whether you will use in a PS5? In that case you would definitely need to get a heatsink, which may also be a good idea if using in a PC whose motherboard doesn't include a heatsink, you should be able to find a decent enough one for like $15-30.

      • Thanks for replying.

I was going to chuck it on a PCIe to nvme adapter. Still thinking about it though.

    • +2

For light usage, T500 generally performs faster. However, T500 does appear to have minor issues which I am guessing Crucial / Phison will address some of them in future firmware updates.

If you do slightly more heavy tasks with mixed read+write usage, then T500 might not be the best (compared to other flagship PCIe gen 4 x4 SSDs).

Also, if you use it on a PC, it's best Crucial provides a firmware fix to address:

      Steady State Write Performance

If you do get T500, it's best you install Crucial's SSD utility app and expect firmware updates.

      • Hey @netsurfer, you answered my question re: Amazon US/UK purchases made on Amazon AU in the past. You mentioned it would go through Amazon AU. Would we get the full "local" warranty or the reduced global warranty? e.g. MSI motherboards have 3 years limited local warranty and only 1 year global warranty. I tried to confirm with Amazon AU customer service but couldn't get a straight answer.

        • Amazon AU CSR won't state the exact warranty you get. However, the current understanding is that, Amazon AU will manage the warranty support for you and for the moment, Amazon AU will treat Amazon US/UK as a seller hold them accountable if you purchase from Amazon AU Web site.

The current expectation is Amazon AU will manage the return for you (for warranty) so Amazon AU will arrange the return to Amazon US/UK and Amazon US/UK will then do its local warranty. If you purchase directly from Amazon US/UK, then you are on your own.

However, all of the above is unofficial and based on other OZBers experience.

  • Thanks OP got one!

  • The T500 - 2TB is only $131.76 if anyone prefers that drive over the P5

    https://www.amazon.com.au/Crucial-T500-PCIe-Gen4-NVMe/dp/B0C…

    • +6

That's actually only 1TB, due to Amazon incorrectly labelling the capacity in the selection.

      1TB (CT500T500SSD8) = 500GB
      2TB (CT1000T500SSD8) = 1TB
      4TB (CT2000T500SSD8) = 2TB

Actual 2TB for the Crucial T500 is $234.24

  • Will this be a good main OS drive? I recently bought a Lenovo Legion Slim 5 14” OLED which came with a 512GB SSD. Will this be a good replacement? Thanks

  • Is this recommended as a primary OS drive ?

    • +2

Of course. 99% of people wouldn't even notice the difference between a Gen3 or Gen4 drive in daily use.
The P5 Plus has plenty of performance (IO and read/write speed) for an OS/gaming/general storage drive, along with generally being reliable. The fact it also has DRAM cache is beneficial for OS type operations (random reads/writes).

It's not the fastest Gen4 drive, but it's also not the slowest. Somewhere between mid-tier and high-tier, in terms of total features/performance/reliability. For $128 for the 2TB version (delivered), it's a relative bargain. Typically they're like $200.

      • My current pc motherboard can only utilizr gen3 max, will these fit thr slot on them? I know they wont be as fast as a gen4 slot motherboard but want to make sure they at least fit

        • +1

Should work fine without issue - physically it will fit a "standard" M.2 slot (2280 nvme standard), and Crucial have very good compatibility. I've got two of their Gen4 drives in running in my Gen3 NAS system (10700k), no issues at all. Although speeds won't hit the PCIe Gen4 speeds promised, you'll still get excellent speeds - likely maxing out close to the PCIe Gen3 limits (ie. 3000-3500 MB/s), with the added benefit that the drive will run cooler than if it was being pushed at Gen4 speeds.

Visit the above link, then near the top you'll see "Check compatibility"… select your manufacturer; product line; and model of motherboard.

          • @heyitsjel: your a legend, thank you!

          • @heyitsjel: i checked the compatability using the crucial website, i have ASUS prime b365-k motherboard. It says its not compatible, but i am not sure if thats cuz it will be a gen4 running on gen3, thus not get full speed, or if it actually wont work.

            • @zorodluffy: Are you sure it doesn't list compatibility? I couldn't find a Prime b365-k, but could find a prime b365m-k - perhaps this is your board? the only difference would be ATX vs mATX form factor…

              The Prime b365m-k is compatible:

              https://www.crucial.com/ssd/p5-plus/ct1000p5pssd8/CT20135171

              • @heyitsjel: My bad, sorry i meant prime b365m-k.

I just checked it out, i selected heatsink to check compatbility and its not compatible. But if i select the non-heat sink version, it says compatible.

I assume this is because my board is a m version? micro and thus small and wont fit?

Anyway would i be right to assume I can use it without the heatsink, so it fits, and since my board is GEN 3, it wont require the heatsink anyway?

  • I bought a Seagate Firecuda 530 from a deal couple weeks ago, This is about $70 cheaper but I'm considering using this as my main drive for new build and returning the Firecuda.
Would there be any noticeable difference for gaming/ boot times?

  • Was waiting for my Amazon $15 credit to come through and it went OOS.

Is there anything left for Cyber Monday that even remotely compares?

    • Not really. You might have to wait until Xmas sales.
