Currently riding to the highest of points in Melbourne iykyk, and I saw this banner on my tram.
Naturally, I’d assume it’s pretty similar to last years
Enjoy!

Most likely depends on the area and what sort of people are out and about
I don't think there's any area in Melbourne that's 100% safe.
Melbourne is very safe. There is nowhere in the world that’s “100% safe”. Even places like Tokyo and Singapore have risks.
@tp0: I agree - Brunswick and Princes Park are both very safe areas.
@Mr Bob Dobalina: Agree. I frequent Sunshine train station well after midnight and most people don't even approach me or my rotty.
@tp0: lol, the amount of times ive seen drugged out people in the city, (if only i had a dollar)
A guy shooting up with some white powder in a needle outside the casino in front of families and children walking past was the most confronting
10mins later an ambulance arrived…
@Headless: But were they harming anyone other than themselves?
@tp0: Verbally abusing, yes
"harming" only themselves and tieing up ambulance resources
@tp0: So the same logic as Kensington, Philadelphia? Would you dare walk there?
@tp0: Taking up valuable emergency resources, yes.
Being out when they can do that shit at home, yes.
Still giving the dealers more reason to sell.
This city needs to be cleaned up.
@tp0: I'd walk the streets of singapore and tokyo after midnight anytime over Melbourne or any part in Australia.
Nowhere is 100% safe. You can slip over in your bathroom and hit your head. Why do people think this is an intelligent comment?
Safety is relative. Spend some time in suburban Townsville and you'll mark most of the world as safer.
Now that Anna is going, we might get some effective action on youth crime rather than the usual lip service and softly-softly.
Or the world. Live with it
Probably as safe as it is any other time of the year. Personally I would find a friend who will take a phone call and talk to them whilst walking home.
What will that accomplish?
I think a mugger would be put off knowing that the victim is talking to somebody who can alert the cops immediately.
@try2bhelpful: I think you give the local methheads too much credit.
@chepsk8: Perhaps but I think they might look elsewhere. If I’m walking home at night I ring the other half and he can step out into our laneway, which is the darkest part of the journey.
Super bad idea. This takes your focus away on noticing suspicious characters and surrounding hazards.
You can do both. Believe me I’ve done this in the past. You just need to be aware of your surroundings.
I’m a man and I wouldn’t feel safe walking home alone from a bus stop after midnight if there wasn’t a large number of other people around.
I feel safe walking anywhere in Melb but maybe being male gives me a false sense of security.
I'd be just as worried about stepping on a syringe or going for a swim at St Kilda
I mean, nobody's forcing you to take them either.
Good question @Mondorock
From one Ozb to another: please don't throw up on my tram. I am working night shift on NYE 😭
Saw someone do that on a train once. I, suppose, it could be worse.
Thank you for working that night. I hope they pay you well.
So am I (Uber driver).
I feel your pain when i was working night shift then going home early on new years day. The train will reek of vomit, cigarette smoke and bad bo.
No comment from Jules Verne complaining about taxpayers money funding this?
Early days
Bloody Dan Andrews!
I'm sad he dropped the use of that avatar
COME ON SYDNEY!
nsw govt: can we charge them to breath air?
😂lol
One person won't be using it…
Goddamn it. I know it's 2 weeks to Christmas but let me deal with that first before getting a lovely blue banner telling me it's going to be a new year in 20 days. 😞
It’s Free public replacement bus everyday for some trainline, for quite a while, only 2-3 h to cbd, good bargain.
From 6pm? That's a bloody joke. Most and many people are already out and getting organized by then. Congratulations Vic Government. You've just created a bottle neck on NYE that did not need to be there.
So where is the bottle neck then? The people who are already out and about have paid for their fare.
Those who will wait to travel at 6pm. The kiddie fireworks are 9pm so a lot of families will wait to travel for free at 6pm. If you've got two parents and 2-3 kids it makes a difference. This group could have otherwise trundled in over the course of the afternoon.
The deal has been around for a number of years. I've taken advantage of it each time. It's never very packed after 6pm just because travel is free for NYE. It's only somewhat really busy coming back home.
@Lucille Bluth: Yep, you're right… always has been 6pm by the look of it. Hey, maybe I am wrong…. just feels late in the day if the plan is to get people using public transport.
Christmas day should also be free all day. Section 3.152 free travel days
https://www.ptv.vic.gov.au/footer/legal-and-policies/victori…
Hanukah should also be free (all 8 days)
I downloaded the guide referenced by Repposh just to confirm Hanukah wasn't listed (it's not). Delete this comment.
Confirm Hanukah is not free :)
Happy new year, everyone!
Does this cover V-Line travel? Spend NYE in the bush!
Yes, so long as you board after 6pm
Also note the first outbound Vline trip (from Melbourne) is also free on new year's day
This is official communication from PTV with updated info, you can edit your description.
