Cheapest i can find. Needs a sturdy tripod mount to operate but should be worth it for the money. (Desktop site wouldn't let me checkout but via mobile browser I had success)

  • Could any one recommend a bino for a 5yo to look at the moon and stars?

    • +1

One problem is that astro binoculars with decent magnification are heavy for anyone under 10 if not mounted on a tripod. Their little arms get tired and shaky after a few minutes. It's easiest for the little ones to lay on their back and rest the eye cups on their cheeks whilst looking up/around zenith. Maybe start with Skymaster 12x60 which weigh approx 1.1kg, in comparison the 25x100 weigh nearly 4kg.

You can mount this on a tripod and point it easily.

This bino is really sharp. Moon details are great. You can see Pleiades and Orion nebula easy. Planets will be a bit small but you can make out Saturn's rings.

      • Saturn rings are crisp and clear with this?

    • I started as a kid with ordinary binoculars. For a 5 year old you might want a mini pair?

      • Yeah need something light and small and a 5yo will only be interested in it for 15 mins so something cheap would suit

For a 5yo or even 10yo for use without a mount, keep the magnification below 10 (go for 7 or 8 max) as anything higher will require steady hands and skill to prevent the image from shaking excessively and being unusable.
Also try to keep the weight as low as possible, objective lenses at low magnifications only need to be 40-42mm to optimize pupils size for night time use (Astronomy).
Aim to get a pupil size of between 5-7mm (pupil size = objective dia / magnification, so 7x35 binos have a pupil size of 5mm).
7x35 and 8x42 come to mind as good sizes to fit the above criteria.
Porro Prisms are generally better image quality per dollar.

Thanks for the reply! I haven't been able to find many options in that size for Santa to bring unfortunately, at least not within a reasonable price range

Yeah, I wouldn't buy expensive ones for a young kid as they may wreck them.
I don't know how much you want to spend and these are probably over the top for a 5yo but If you can find these for around $50 (they are currently $66.75 from Amazon AU but have been under $40 before) it's not bad going.
I'm just not sure if the minimum inter pupillary distance might be too wide for a small face (these are adult binos and the IPD is not specified).

  • isnt there a market for a telescope on a tripod that has hdmi out and spits out a fhd or even 4k image???

    • +1

There is a market and it already exists, check out the Dwarf II and Vaonis Stellina. There are others that I can't remember off the top of my head.

      • This is why I try & read all the comments - it's little gems like this that send people off on amazing tangets! Thanks.

      • OMG! Never knew these existed. So many questions…
Can this find a particular star/planet via the app?
        Can it track the object?
Would this be good as a spotting scope for target shooting?

  • Anyone have a link to a decent tripod Mount ?
