[VIC] Rod Laver, Margaret Crt. + John Cain Arena Australian Open Tix from $29, 4-5pm Thursdays in December @ Ticketmaster

1300

Got an email from AO last night.

*Tickets are limited. Happy Slam Hour runs between 4pm to 5pm AEDT Thursday 30 November 6 December 2023. Rod Laver Arena and Margaret Court Arena tickets start from $29 and John Cain Arena tickets start from $39. For terms and conditions, please click here. For ticketing FAQs please click here. For more information on ticket purchasing, please visit Ticketmaster here. Should you experience any issues booking your tickets, please direct your queries to Ticketmaster.

AO ticketing is a little confusing and changes yearly. I only ever go on a ground pass ($49) which gets you access to all outdoor courts + unreserved section of John Cain. It doesn't include MCA or Rod Laver.

In the reverse, an MCA, Rod Laver or John Cain ticket all include a ground pass. So if you can get a $29 ticket to any of these, then you'll be saving money rather than buying a ground pass at $49. See ticketing info.

Singles can be seen on the outdoor courts for most of the first week, then 2nd week its doubles + the juniors. So ground pass week 1 yes. 2nd week you'll need to be in Rod Laver or MCA to see singles and prices go up as you go into the finals. Anyway, you could probably write a book about AO's ticketing .

Also AO starts on Sunday this year instead of Monday. Day 1 starts on the 14th, anything before that is qualifiers.

TL;DR: Buy any of these tickets to get an essentially discounted ground pass.

Normal example prices:

  • Rod Laver: Day 2 - Day $89 Night $79. Day 9 - Day $99 night $149
  • MCA: Day 2 - Day/Night $69 - Day 9 $59
  • John Cain: Day $59 - Day 9 $49

Update: Appears it's on every Thursday (23/11, 30/11, 7/12, 14/12 & 21/12)

Can tell you right now, all the decent seats are long gone

    • +28

Just buy any of these tickets for $29 and use them as a ground pass (worth $49).

      • +1

        Good thinking batman

      • Thanks, that is a winning move! Never been to the AusOpen, let's make this happen!

        • +1

The Goat (Joker) will trash Fe(Al)dals and the others again one by one with his HEAD racquets for 25.

    • +1

I've never been to watch tennis, but I assume all arenas are small enough that there aren't any terrible seats? (terrible = not worth $29, let alone RRP)

        • +8

Ugh. I hate people doing that. :)

      • +9

        This is all subjective.

        • Too far away. Possibly in Rod Laver at the top
        • Not having seats behind the court, instead of the side is a bit of a different perspective that I don't like as its different from the angle you see on TV.
        • Sun/shade. If you get a hot day, you will probably want to sit in a shaded part of the stadium.

All the outdoor courts have good seating…if you can get a seat as they're limited but you can get obstructed by the umpires chair but you're close enough to touch the players so all good.

They also added a new 2 storey bar to the side of court 6 this year which I reckon will be crazy.

“We’re very excited to launch the AO Courtside Bar, a double-storey structure overlooking Court 6 with a capacity of more than 400. We expect this will quickly become known as the ‘party court’, and it’s a model we’d like to expand further across the site in future.

I'm going to call it now, there is going to be some controversy that happens. Player complains about noise, someone throws a beer, someone flashes their butt… /remindme 2 months

        • +1

There is so much movement during points that you only get to see when you're actually there. People literally have no idea about tennis etiquette and cause so much havoc and they don't understand anything. So I can only imagine this Court 6 shenanigans.

      • +2

Just about any seat in MCA will be great. Much better value at normal pricing than RLA

      • +1

In January any seat in the sun is a terrible seat.

        • At some point in the day almost every seat will end up being in the sun

          • @marioland:

At some point in the day almost every seat will end up being in the sun

            What about when it's overcast?

        • +2

Could be worse, you could be playing tennis for 4+ hours in the sun.

      • Having watched up in the nosebleed seats in RLA (at night), they're fine to watch and see the play, and you still feel part of the atmosphere, maybe a little more cheekiness. It can be a bit stuffy and humid though higher up.

  • How much are the various surcharges and dubious fees?

    • +6

No fees. They are included in the ticket prices. When Ticketmaster took over the AO from Ticketek a few years ago, this was one of the positives.

  • Cheers for the tips

  • +1

last time they had the $29 tickets a few days ago - literally seconds into the sale there were none of the tickets at the promo price. Knowing Ticketmaster - by design.

    • +1

I got a feeling the sites gona crash for first 55 mins

  • From memory back in 2019, you could only enter the precinct after 5 p.m. using a Rod Laver night session ticket.

    • Same deal now. They will have after 5pm tickets for ground pass too

    • +3

That’s because after 5 p.m is when they play the night session

    • Only if the day session has finished, otherwise you'll have to wait

    • It’s not that clear from the FAQ it looks like you could get in on a ground pass before 5?

      What does RLA ticket include?

“Tickets include access to a reserved seat within Rod Laver Arena and all areas of the AO precinct, including non-ticketed areas within John Cain Arena*, 1573 Arena, Court 3, Kia Arena and other outdoor courts. There is no access to Margaret Court Arena with a Rod Laver Arena ticket.

Please note, access to John Cain Arena, Kia Arena and outside courts is not guaranteed and is subject to availability, capacity limits and other exclusions.”

      • Like I said previously similar to other posts here too, you can only enter after 5 p.m. using a night session ticket.

  • I think my ground pass was only $25 for January 26, was this cheaper because there will be less matches on?

    • Won't be much on outside on the 26th. Maybe juniors or wheelchair?

EDIT: Looking at last year, it will be juniors finals. Google Information Tab

  • Is this available for all days? Pretty great deal!

Ground passes are $49? The last time I looked they were almost $80 from memory

    • $49 is their standard price for most days until later in the tournament when ground passes don't get you into much of note anymore and drop to $19. The middle weekend ground passes are $69 from mem.

      • Ah that's probably what I remember… The weekends were probably $69 + surcharge

  • AO ticketing kills me every year. I prefer to get ticketed seats in John Cain/Melbourne/Hisense. But the last few years they didn't release tickets, or released them very late, said it was all groudpass… blah blah so you either wait and get nothing, or wait, miss out on other courts while they made their mind up. This year finally they released them at the same time. Got MCA day tix last year and was pretty boring/dull. John Cain all the way for atmosphere.

  • The only thing about these are you are taking the risk not knowing our stupid weather.

You might be unlucky and cop the day it rains. Then stuck with crap seats in the nose bleeds watching a bunch of witches hats play haha

  • Also take note of the following-

*Access to John Cain Arena, Kia Arena and outside courts is not guaranteed and is subject to availability, capacity limits and other exclusions.

    • +3

That is for ground pass tickets. You might have to line up for a popular match. If you get a ticket to RL/MCA/JC you get a seat no matter what. That's the great thing about the $29 ticket. Ground pass access, plus guaranteed seat if you want it.

    • +1

That's just the usual thing meaning if a court with unallocated seating (the ones listed) reach capacity or there's no game being played such as on the final few days obviously you can't go in. Never been an issue.

      • Good to know. I know how Tiley works. The guy is a leech and will do anything to rip off supporters of tennis.
$200 tickets for a half decent seat in round 1 rod laver is a bloody disgrace.

        • last year i went and the only time john cain was full was when it rained, just had to wait a bit to get in when an aussie played or something. so ground pass wise, good value

  • last time i checked $29 was only for first few days i think. dont expect $29 for round 4 quarters etc tickets.

  • We have a couple of night tickets booked to RL this year, so you can use them as ground passes for the morning outside court sessions (same day) as well?

    • Night tickets can enter the grounds after 5pm. Day tickets have access to the entire day & night.

  • I assume when we go through the portal we'll be offered to buy either Rod Laver, Margaret Court or John Cain tickets. I'd like to go day 1, day session. Can anyone suggest which arena I should look to buy? Would love to see some Aussies, probably not just top seeds slamming other players.

    • +3

Look at the Google Information Tab for last year's event.

      As for Aussies:

      Day 1:

      Mens Singles

Hijikata - Court 8 (Won AO Doubles)
Millman - Court 3 (Now retired)
      Kubler - John Cain

      Womens

      Rodionova - Show Court Arena
      McPhee - Court 8
      Cabrera - Court 7
      Hives -Show Court Arena
      Aiava - Court 3

People like de Minaur likely on MCA, RLA or John Cain. If Kyrgios plays which is a maybe, it will be John Cain at night.

      • +2

Milman retires after the AO doesn't he?

Go for John Cain, Aussies usually choose to play there as it's a bit more rowdy. It's rowdy because half of the stadium is open to ground pass. That 'bar court' might take the cake though. Interested to check that out.

  • who's the hottest female tennis players to watch?

    asking for a friend.

    • +5

@jv is pretty hot to watch play tennis

  • When I check out I keep getting the error “oops secure ticket selection required” WTF does that mean??

    • Yeah same here. I give up.

      • It's just an option that you select yes or no to. IIRC It's something about enabling you to cancel if you have COVID etc.

    • Read the checkout prompts, there is a section to tick secure ticket or to not opt for secure ticket. I think its just for enhanced refund rights. Just tick no to avoid additional fee.

    • Yep using MS Edge browser will FAIL, thanks Microsoft.
(secure tickets part doesn't show up, even after multiple attempts)

Got tickets using APPLE device with Google CHROME - thank you Google.

  • +2

I had no issue scoring tix for Rod Laver on my date of choice. MC Arena wasn't an option at that price for that day. Thanks OP. Brilliant heads-up.

    • Which date did you go? i've booked 21st Sunday day session on RLA. great price!

  • +1

Got RLA for Day 2 in the nosebleeds but at least behind the service line. Got my 30c cashback at Topcashback as well!

    • hahahahaha god your the best 😂

  • +3

Got RLA on 21st Jan (Sunday Day Session) for $160 for myself and my son. He is going to love it!

Looking at the seating map tickets were selling fast!

    • +1

      see you there! ;)

  • I got my ticket for Margaret court arena for Sunday 14 night session. How do I know if it’s going to be a male or female single though?

    • Look up their dress on the day.

Funnies aside, I don't think you will know until the draw comes out…. but usually for night sessions they will have a female match first followed by a mens match.

  • -1

    Ticketmaster are trash.

  • Thanks OP! Got tickets on the lower tier behind the base line on opening night for $29!

  • Jumped on and grabbed a couple nose bleeds for Rod Laver Monday Jan 22 Night. Not too bad for $79 a piece.

    • ripped

  • Managed 2 adults + 1 kid tickets to MCA for 14-Jan Day pass. Thanks OP!

  • Just got FOMO and got a day ticket (15/1, 12pm session) but can only enter after 6pm. Will they still let me in?

    • +1

If you have a day ticket you can enter anytime after 10am.

      • +1

Thanks for that. Should have another meetup there - it even sits under the $35 pp limit.

  • Cheers op got a couple of tix

  • I managed to get MCA Sunday 14 Jan, for 6 people. Best I could get was at the back of section 8. Did they actually release any for $49, better than back of sections or was I just too slow?

  • -1

Last year they did releases across many days. Are they gonna do another happy hour tomorrow?

  • +1

Was able to get rod laver for day 2 thanks OP! $29 is a steal for 2 (potentially 3) top seed matches

  • -7

what's the chance that you'll be able to resell these tickets for more through ticketmaster resale later?

    • You can’t sell for more than 10% of the ticket value and if you get caught you face huge fines

      • So if I sell my $10 ground pass for $12 I’m stuffed?

        • Username checks out

        • Doubt there is a black market for 1st week ground passes anyway

  • +2

Are gay people allowed into Margaret Court Arena?

    • Yes, as long as you are there to watch the tennis and not interrupt the match with a gay marriage.

    • +1

Only gay and trans people are allowed into Margaret court arena

  • Gutted I missed this! 😢

  • -1

In the link it's saying to check back later. Does that mean it may run again?

  • +2

Looks like it's on again tomorrow from 4-5pm.

    • Title should be 7/12?

      • Ah yes.

  • Got tickets this time. Remember if you buy an evening ticket you can only get in at 5 pm!

  • Only limited days with the discounted tickets. Must be for sessions that haven’t filled up yet.
