Pioneer Receiver VSX-S500 K $199. Box Tagged $699 @ Dick Smith

350

Went by the Mt Druitt store to have a look at some of the deals posted yesterday and the friendly manager pointed this out. I don't know the availability at other stores, couldn't find this model on the DSE website. This is the Slimline 5.1-Channel HDMI 3D A/V Receiver with additional ethernet, usb port and iPod/iPhone connectivity. Edit: didn't see it advertised anywhere.. was after the VSX-521, store had none left so the manager pointed this out.

Looks like a run out model. Most likely stocks are sparse. Call your local store for stock.

  • Dropped by 3 DS stores in Perth today. Not a pioneer or Samsung DVD/Blueray/Audio device in sight. Mostly Philips and a couple of Panasonic/Sony items.

  • VSX-521 slightly better isn't it? Produces more Watts so good for larger speakers.
This one produces 100W at 4ohms, where as the VSX-521 is 125W at 6ohms, so if you plug in a 4ohm it can prob do higher than 125W due to less resistance.

  • OMG…I would like to know which store have stock…do i need to call up every stores?! :(
Indeed I grabbed the VSX-S300 from yesterday's post but really wanna it with extra USB port.
DSE stop testing my heart :(

I guess the price is ok for this receiver.

Whe compared to this deal: http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/81307
the key differences between the VSX-S500 and VSX-S300 seem to be that
    1. S500 has ipod connectivity
    2. S500 has streaming radio support
    3. S500 has 1080p upscaling

However, the S300 deal came bundled with speakers (HS50), for the same price.

None of the features in the S500 matter to me, so I'd personally have gone with the S300 deal, but for the overall feature set - it seems to be a good price.

    • I'm struggling not to think of these extra features…

    • Can anyone explain the weight difference? This is 4.2kg and the other is 9kg?

      • +23

        A child labourer fell in

      • i think weight and power consumption values are wrong when you check each product separately.
when I checked vsx s300 yesterday it was showing 415W consumption but on comparison page they have same weight and same power consumption figures.

      • I think it's almost definitely an error on their site. They've probably specified package weight for one, and the receiver weight only for the other. The comparison page given below by betamax, correctly shows both as being 4.2kg.

    • Oops. Missed one feature.
      4. S500 has a front USB host port

  • I have purchased S300 deal. This deal also looks good

easy comparison chart between S500 and S300
    Compare S500 and S300

I like ethernet and usb host feature on this.

    What is difference between

On-Screen Display (GUI) Yes (S500) Analogue (English) (S300)

    in comparison ?

    • on the 500 you can seen the menu as a screen overlay (I assume multiple languages and HDMI) while the 300 only supports english and over component (and possible composite).

  • Any recommendations on equalisers?

    • AVR's come with eqs on them. You usually get the best sound by using the passthrough feature on these

  • These receivers have issues with video switching, pay a little more and go for a Yamaha, Denon or Onkyo.

    • +1

Can you elaborate on the issues? I've read a few reviews and never came across a video related issue. I'm a total noob with home theatre though, so maybe I missed it completely lol.

Massive thanks to the OP. Picked up the last one from pakenham this morning. I was going there for lunch today so I called the store a they put one aside for me. They had 2 but when I picked mine up just now that was the last one.

    • Sweet! You're welcome, glad to hear they are still in stock.

  • I contacted a couple of stores in Wollongong and they all had them marked as $549

    • They may have them marked for $549, but as far as i know DSE prices are all linked and there is no such thing as a "manager's special".

Therefore just bring it to the counter and it should scan as $199.

  • DS has price match policy? Ask if they will price match other DS store prices?

  • I returned mine, seal unbroken to Mt Druitt store. So there's that and a demo which the manager said he would sell for $175..

    • Why on earth did you return it?

    • now you can walk in and buy it again and save an extra $24. what a bargain.

  • Bought because of the discount, not because I needed it :) nice unit, was too tempting and couldn't walk away!

Wow that is such a pathetic thing to do.

    • But you mentioned you were after the 521 anyway. For $199 this is an excellent unit. Nice of you to give the chance to someone else to purchase this.

  • That comment is pathetic. Don't these people have anything better to do than write negative things!

  • Not a bad deal, but I'm after a 7.1 receiver.. Would be super keen if a deal came up for one of those!
    Thanks OP anyway.

  • one left in Victoria Pakenham, display stock

  • Saw these in store - they are ok to drive a small set of satellite speakers but as they are rated at 100w 4ohms the amp is not incredible. The $199 deal with the included speakers is much better value but beggers cannot be choosers with low stock I guess.
