      Rates, not tax.

Would you accept higher rates in return for this being free? I’d personally rather have the people that actually use it pay an entry fee rather than making everyone completely fund pools they may never use.

      • +1

Which is fair, I think I’d rather $4 adult admissions and free for under 18.

        • -1

I don't really use the roads, so because it doesn't benefit me, they should charge every car $4 each time they use one.

          • +6

@callum9999: You're equating swimming pools to transport infrastructure.

            • @OZKap: Nope, I'm equating wanting others to pay for services you don't personally want with wanting others to pay for services you don't personally want.

            • +1

@OZKap: It's all infrastructure and community service. That's what the rates are for. No payment for parks, toilets, libraries, etc.
I do however think pools should carry a nominal fee, but certainly be majority funded by council. 50c. Same with public transport.
Large fees should be associated with private pools, given our water shortages.

          • -1

@callum9999: roads are paid for with fuel excise … the more fuel you use the more you pay for roads ….

            • +4

@garage sale: Nope - Like almost all federal taxes, fuel excise goes into the Federal Government’s general revenue, which is then drawn upon to fund only Federal transport infrastructure.

The vast majority of roads are local roads paid for by rates.

State Roads are paid for by a combination of state taxes, fees, duties, and share of GST.

            • @garage sale: No, local roads are paid for and maintained by local councils…

          • +6

@callum9999: You don’t use the roads?

So you don’t get mail and deliveries? You don’t get groceries from supermarkets that were transported on the roads? You don’t call ambulances that drive on roads? You don’t get rubbish collected by garbage trucks driving on the road? You don’t take public transport that drives on the roads?

Everyone either uses roads or indirectly relies on them. That isn’t the case for public pools.

            • -8

@PainToad: I said I don't REALLY use the roads, not that I have zero contact with them…

Aside from the fact that other people using the roads to provide services I do use doesn't therefore mean I personally use them, none of those things would be affected by a $4 fee for cars. In fact, the drop in traffic would make them all run more efficiently…

          • @callum9999: Why are you negging? This person makes a good point. why not have a discourse about it for all of our education.
Callum… your logic in my opinion can’t apply here. I know what you’re trying to say, but you can’t compare pool usage with roads.
Some things are better to be funded privately by users while some things are better off being completely publicly funded.

Generally roads are used by almost everyone - like Medicare, while the pool, a park, playing a specific sport is an option and used by those who enjoy swimming. Therefore it is better to normally find it as it is a little unfair on those who do not use it and prefer to do another activity

            • -1

@foreverphoenix: While I appreciate you attempting to foster discourse instead of lazily suppressing my post, it doesn't really work if you just talk over me.

I didn't compare pool usage with roads, AGAIN, I compared wanting others to pay for services you don't personally want with wanting others to pay for services you don't personally want.

I have zero desire to debate the merits of roads because it's irrelevant to the point. Change "roads" to literally any other council service if you can't see past that… It's merely a comment on the increasingly selfish nature of Australian society.

              • +3

@callum9999: I think most people underestimate the positive effect things like this can have on their community and in turn on themselves, regardless of whether they are actually using it or not themselves.

                • @filmer: I agree. You naturally need to prioritise yourself above others to get by in life, but I'm not a fan of the extent to which people do so nowadays.

              • -4

@callum9999: But roads are free??? Cars aren’t free?? Not only you don’t use roads much, you don’t use brains much either

                • +1

@Exorcist: You should probably use coherent English if you want to accuse me of "not using brains much".

Roads are only free because we've decided they're free - it's not an inherent property of a road. You've presumably heard of a toll road before?

            • @foreverphoenix: Negging = "I'm so frustrated by your argument, I can't lower my IQ to your level to argue"

              • +1

@freewhere: Or "I don't like it but cannot form a coherent argument against it". Just like the people who have tried haven't been able to (they've chosen to ignore the premise of my argument and focus on "roads are more useful than pools", which I completely agree with and has nothing to do with what I said).

    • It may have been built, but it's not free to operate and maintain during the year.

  • +5

Well done QLD councils. Hope our NSW councils will do the same.

    • You wish lol
I doubt NSW would ever be this generous!

  • +1

Does that include the pee and doodoo in the pool?

    • +1

      Depends. It’s “(un)lucky dip”.

    • doodoo, is that a suburb in queensland ?

      • Nah, u r thinking of Daddo in Victoria… there’s like 3 or 4 of them

    • Not from the platform :D

  • +3

Initiatives like this give young people something positive to do with their time. Good on the Brisbane City council for doing something positive. Spending money to encourage good activity like this is a much better idea than spending money to try to correct behavioral/ criminal problems down the track.

    • +2

Yes, the kid can now go for a swim instead of stealing cars.

  • wondering if there is any sauna?

    • +2

Go during the day around noon… and it’ll be like sauna

  • that means more people will be going there equal more pee in the water.

  • +2

Does this mean youth crime will go down because teenagers will have something to do?

    • +4

I blame their lack of faith in the Lord. If only they went to sunday school…

    • Go swimming or steal cars….hmmmm

      • +1

Maybe we should give all these little crims a free car, lock them in and push them into a pool.

        New reality show coming soon:

        Steel Cars Can't Swim

  • meanwhile sydney almost $10 for entry for an adult

  • Jesus, last time I went to a pool it was like $2.50 for entry.

  • Would be great except this means usage is going to be absolutely saturated, so the pool will be useless for swimming laps.

  • Another option for South Brisbane people to escape the heat could be a Dremworld Annula Pass.

We do this and works out around $2.50/week each to go to their Waterpark section.
$129/year each. Plus as a local you get a $20 food voucher included (technical could bring down price of $109 if voucher used). Also the membership gives you 10% off food and drinks bought there (we dont find that too enticing and tend to bring our own Cut Lunch-yes allowed)

    Not the same, i know.
You can't really do laps there, but if it is for a heat escape plan (especially for young ones) then its an option for some.

    Our usual Summer Itinerary:
1st Go to their cafe (prices similar to other nearby cafes) and buy 2 coffees (iced ones if very hot day) and a drink for our child (we also take our own water thermos to refill throughout the day).
2nd Take their park train for either a lap or to stop off at the animal section (often take our coffees if doing full lap)
3rd Either visit the animals (lots of shaded areas) of head to the new water section of the main park (not the water park). More liek a big sprinkler section so keeps all cool.
4th Find a shady spot and have a picnic lunch.
5th Head to the water park section (most of the morning and midday crowd have disapated so a little less crowded).
5th Slip, Slop, Slap and spend time in the wave pool to cool our core temps.
6th enjoy playing in the various water themed rides and attractions (or nap while the little one does.. plenty of shaded beach chair zones).

I know this wont suit all, but if it its of use to at least one Ozbargainer, my effort here was worth it.

It's a pretty long trip to Dreamworld though, not to mention the hectic M1 traffic.

Meanwhile, out here in the lower socioeconomic city of Logan, we're still paying $6.20 to go for a swim. Almost like the council doesn't understand how many residents are struggling.

      • It's a pretty long trip to Dreamworld though,

Depends how far away you are I guess

not to mention the hectic M1 traffic.

tbh, I dont use the M1 much.
The extra 5-10mins going the back ways and listening to audiobooks is super chill for me.

Meanwhile, out here in the lower socioeconomic city of Logan, we're still paying $6.20 to go for a swim. Almost like the council doesn't understand how many residents are struggling.

Oh.. theyre aware alright. Just not focused on tye real issues.

  • +1

Of course Redcliffe is not included

    • +4

I wouldn't expect they would be, being in a different council area. Just like Ipswich, Logan, and Redland pools aren't included. So all the residents in these areas, largely from a lower socioeconomic strata than Brisbane, will continue to pay $6+ to go for a swim.

I guess at least Ipswich has Orion Lagoon, which I think is free? I guess at Redcliffe you can go swimming in the ocean, not the best beach I guess, but it's something. Same with Redland. Logan really has no free swimming areas unless you're willing to risk one of your limbs becoming lunch for a bull shark in the Logan River.

      • Orion Lagoon in Springfield Central is actually really nice, quite large too. And yes, free (or at least it was before I moved away from the area in 2020).

    • +1

At least you have a free one on the beach front i guess.
