            @Twix: Service Class: 1
FTTP Upgrade available: 21 Nov 2023

Looks like it just made the cut yesterday!

Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) - Service Class 1
Your area is serviceable by Fibre, however no box on the outside or NTD (nbn™ box) on the inside have been installed. In other words, fibre has yet to be installed from the street or pit to the premises. You are able to order a service and an installation appointment can be made. This may necessitate a couple of appointments over the next few weeks before we can have an active NBN connection up and running. Appointments are usually booked by the nbn™ as a first available basis and the final installation appointment will require a person over the age of 18 to be at the home during the appointment time. Time frame 3-14 days for appointments depending on the area.

@dammit: You probably can get away with giving Exetel notice now. To be safe I would wait until FTTP is connected.

              • +1

@Twix: @Twix thanks for the guidance, my appointment with NBN is not until 15th Dec, I imagine that's appt 1 of (hopefully) 2? In which case appt 2 may be anywhere from the next day or who knows given it's very close to christmas…so potentially in Jan?

I had thought of an idea, could I give exetel the 30 day notice, then if appt's / FTTP is still not sorted, on the day exetel disconnect, simply just sign up to a new NBN provider as when I switch FTTC it seems to be instant? (& hopefully choose one that does not have a 30 day notice period, if they exist), that way as soon as fttp is ready, I can then kill off that new fttc provider account/connection ?

                • +1

@dammit: Contacted leaptel to ask if any earlier appointment had came up, unfortunately NBN cancelled this appointment and didn't advise them, with the response
"This Order has been escalated to an internal nbn group, further updates will be provided as soon as possible."

Not sure what the issue is… another reason not to cancel anything I guess!

                • @dammit: They might finish the job in 1-4 hours if they can. If not they will have to come back later. As for when I don't know.

That won't work as the new provider will see you're FTTP installation is in progress.

There maybe a blockage in the street somewhere.

  • I'm currently with superloop… How does leaptel compare performance wise.. download speeds and latency? I noticed from Melbourne, I had relatively few hours to nextDC in Sydney.

So I thought superloop were pretty decent from a network routing perspective.

    • Performance should be comparable for FTTN and basically the same for FTTP - the advantage with Leaptel is if you need support, they have local Australia support people that actually answer the phone / emails / chat.

      • Agree with Bauser - only had three planned outages in my area with Leaptel, last email I can find was May 2023. Can't blame thunderstorms outages on Leaptel, that's why I bought a UPS just for the Box and the Wifi Mesh Modem. I may try superloop next to get the discounted cost, then move back to Leaptel afterwards.

oh this is UPGRADE ONLY. so you can't just sign up if you are already on fibre…. That's ridiculous….

  • I signed up (FTTN exetel to FTTP Leaptel).

Do I start with Leaptel from when I sign up (continuing with FTTN until FTTP is provisioned), or do I stay with my old provider and it start once the FTTP is provisioned?

    • I just did the same at the beginning of last month, but from Aussie BB.

I moved across straight away to FttN with Leaptel and then I contacted them again around mid November once FttP was available for our address - Leaptel advised the customer has to contact them once it becomes available at your address - they can't contact the contact to advise when a location becomes available apparently.

I'm booked in for this Tuesday with the NBN to get FttP.

  • So do I need to sign up for Fttn with leaptel then ask for an upgrade? I currently have no active nbn service at all…

    • No you can skip FTTN and order FTTP.

      • I'm on the page linked to this post but there's no way to proceed with the sign up… I put in my address and it says I'm eligible and I can select the plan but no next or continue button?

        • Call up.

          • @Twix: Ok thanks I have signed up for fttp, 100/20. Is it safe to say the billing period starts when the fttp service is active or has is already started the moment you sign up?

  • Just signed up for fttp install date is 24/2/24 Saturday fingers x it all goes smooth. On the webpage it says 1 day install anyone had this luck

    • I remember there were 2 install dates for me. First was to run fibre from street to a box outside the house, second was to have it run from the box to a modem they installed inside the house.

Both were NBN techs, nothing to do with Leaptel.

    • I thought they were going to come do inspection day 1 but it was a back to back install (no need to run conduit) and the tech did the install day 1 took an hour.
The tech's face lit up with relief when I said just install it back to back where the existing copper is.
So it may depend on how complex your install is.

    • for me it was one day job, yes.

  • Definitely back to back only hiccup I can see is the pit to my house I hoping there is conduit there

I signed up at the start of January for an upgrade. I've had the external box installed last week, however still waiting for internal install by NBN, which they advised would be another 3-4 weeks.

The communication from Leaptel has been terrible. I had to follow up multiple times to get updates and then sometimes didn't get the right information. Last night I called them and was on hold for 15 minutes before giving up. I then went on to the Chat support and waited minutes between messages.

I've cancelled the upgrade due to the poor service, both by NBN and Leaptel. Now moving away from them.

  • Yep I just had a no show tech and there is nothing anyone can do I also had to engage leaptel on updates very poor in nbns side Who did you go with now superloop look promising

  • My start date with Leaptel was set for today - I promptly received the information I needed to get started early this morning. Everything on the Leaptel side went smoothly, I'm just an idiot and over complicated my modem/router set up so it took me a little while to get going, but I'm now up and running and everything is good so far!

  • Good to hear that. My fttp install apt was booked i had to reschedule and calling Leaptel was a breeze to change. So hoping my apt will go smoothly also.

  • Just had the nbn tech come out this morning to connect FTTP, but said the internal box would have to b installed on the inside of the wall where the street cable comes in on the side of the house, which would mean installing it in the master bedroom, and the office is opposite from that room where the existing FTTC modem is as well as home networking, router etc. I rejected the install as made no sense to have it in the bedroom. Was wondering on comments from others that had the install completed was there any similar challenges or was it just installed where old equipment was?

    • Option 1. Re-book with Leaptel. Hopefully someone else turns up and puts the nbn NTD box where you want. If you can't agree you can decline again.

Option 2. Hire a cabler or install your own P20 conduit with a drawstring to where you want the nbn NTD setup. Once completed re-book with Leaptel and nbn will come install the nbn NTD box and fibre cable.

  • Thanks guys for the quick comments!

The tech told me new rule is that can run the internal fibre only 6-12 meters cable length [for me needed about 16m].
Garage, good idea, did u put the Wireless router next to it in the garage or ran the Cat cable to a different location?

Twix/tight-ass, with option 2, prompted me to think, does NBN install the internal connection over the wall or pull the fibre cable in place of the existing telephone cable that is inside the wall[i always assumed inside the wall]?

    • +1

Don't worry about the 12 metres. Your own conduit can be up to 40 metres if you DIY or get a cabler.

Don't put a wireless router in the garage or a metal enclosure as it can decrease your Wi-Fi signal and speed. Get an ethernet CAT6 cable installed from the nbn NTD box in your garage to somewhere else inside your home.

The fibre is run inside the wall, they make a tiny hole in the wall and it gets connected to the nbn NTD box.

Just to update on my upgrade, as today was the reebooked nbn upgrade apt.

The nbn tech came out 1st looked at the outdoor box then asked to c in side of the wall [bedroom], took him in and then he asked where is the existing modem, i said on the other side of the hallway, he had a look and said this is where we can install the new box. I said ok! [to my surprise didn't even have to ask]

In the evening now just had a call from Leaptel followed up if all went as planned and if i had any q's. [Never had that before from a utility provider]

Just thought to update on my experience, someone might find it useful, considering the fttp upgrade is gaining pace.
    Thank you…

  • I am currently on FTTN with ABB. If I upgrade with Leaptel and choose to switch my FTTN provider while I am waiting for the upgrade, how does the switch work?

    • Will the switch happen seamlessly without I have to configure anything on my modem?
    • Do I expect any downtime?
    • Do I need to tell ABB or that will be done automatically?

    Thank you!

    • +1
      1. No router configuration changes are needed.
      2. No.
      3. Aussie BB should get cancelled automatically. If you don't get an email from Aussie BB call them to cancel FTTN.
      • +1

Awesome, thank you for your response @Twix

  • I had my FTTP 100/20 with Leaptel installed yesterday. It's a much quicker turnaround than I expected. I placed the order on 11 June and all is up and running 6 days later.

The NBN box is installed in the garage. Try to get it installed where my router was but the technician said it wasn't possible. They require the box to be installed on the outer wall and a meter from a power point. I finally settled with garage.

I just want to check if the light as indicated in this image is supposed to be amber, instead of green.

I use my old router that I got from Aussie BB (Netcomm) for the FTTN service and Tenda MW3 for the mesh network to cover the whole house. I have a raspberry pi attached directly to the router and from there I can get above 90mbps download and around 19mbps upload which is according to the plan. So I am not sure if that light above is meant to be amber.

MW3 seems can't deliver the full speed, I get around 60mbps. Is that expected from MW3? Thanks all.

    • UNI-D1 amber means Gigabit and if you ever see a UNI-D light go green that means 100Mbps. The UNI-D light on the nbn fibre box is amber because the Netcomm router has a Gigabit port. The UNI-D light would change to green if you plugged in the MW3 to the nbn fibre box because the MW3 ports have a maximum of 100Mbps. The UNI-D light can also change to green if there was a problem with the ethernet cable.

I reckon the MW3 is using 2.4GHz Wi-Fi since you are only getting 60Mbps.

How many MW3 are you using? Is the Netcomm router or Tenda MW3 router located in the garage?

      • +1

Thanks @Twix. So from your answer, amber is expected since I connected the Netcomm router to it.

I use 3 MW3 (including the one attached to the Netcomm router). So Netcomm router and one MW3 are in the garage. I turn off the wifi on Netcomm router. I have devices that run on 2.4GHz and 5GHz. Just did speed test on the device running 5GHz, and it gets 70mbps.

        • +1

Yeah amber is expected with the Netcomm router. You don't need the Netcomm router at all. You can plugin a Tenda MW3 router to the nbn fibre box and configure the Tenda settings to dynamic IP.

Consider getting a cabler or electrician to put an ethernet wall port next to the nbn fibre box. Plugin the ethernet cable from UNI-D1 into the wall port and another ethernet cable from the wall port inside your home to the router. This helps with increasing your Wi-Fi speed and Wi-Fi range.

nbn are going to increase the 100/20 speed tier to 500/50. You will need a new mesh setup later to get 500/50 and this new mesh setup replaces both the Netcomm and Tenda MW3.

          • +1

@Twix: Thanks again Twix. Agree, cable behind the wall is the best. Looking into getting a cabler to do it in the future.

      • Hi @Twix, want to have you opinion. If I grab DECO X20 currently on sale, would I get closer to 100mbps inside the house without running the cable?

        • Most likely. Deco X20 can do about 300Mbps to 800Mbps on Wi-Fi 6 depending on where the other Deco's are and 900Mbps wired ethernet.

          • +1

@Twix: Thanks for your quick response.

With Wi-Fi 6, does it depend on the wifi client on each device to be able to take the benefit of Wi-Fi 6? Or in itself it is already an improvement overall?

            • +1

@peuwayaqdq: Your client device also needs Wi-Fi 6. If your client device doesn't have Wi-Fi 6 it will use Wi-Fi 5.

    • Interestingly, I get over 90mbps this morning through my mobile phone which is connected to the primary node of MW3 and I was at the furthest distance in the house to that node.

  • Just started process of NBN upgrade (FTTC to FTTP) with Leaptel hopefully smooth and trouble free. Hopefully they let me pick good spot for the NBN box.

    • NBN tech booked for next week.

      • +2

That was pretty painless up now 939 down 48.6 up FTTP

        • did they let you pick the spot for the fibre box?

          • @zanzir: The outside box I didn't ask. For the inside box I got it installed in the kitchen in a cupboard.
