Too big to put it on the drip tray. Good scale though

For anyone wondering, its fine for a Breville dual boiler drip tray. I use it every day.

      • Probably should have checked before I bought it, but glad you left this comment!

      • same here

      • I was going to ask the same thing. Thanks !

      • +1

What size cups do you use? We have latte glasses that are relatively tall.

      • Fine on a nuova simonelli oscar too. been using this for 9 months or so, very happy with it.

      • As a fellow dual-boilerer it wouldn't fit the mugs my wife likes unless using my naked portafilter.

    • +1

      I use the nano instead

      • I also use this overpriced good looking thing. Also comes in handy for baking. Charge lasts forever too. I think I've charged it once in a yr of daily use.

      • Thankyou m9.
Picked one of these up :D

    • Too big for my Bambino Plus drip tray. I went with this instead: https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B0BKRBR3BZ/ref=ppx_yo_d…

    • Get bottomless portafilter

    • Fits on my Breville Touch drip tray.

  • Wonder if this is the preferred scale for "herbs"…

    • +2

No - if you weight "herbs" less than 5g each time

Read the Terms & Conditions very carefully.

      Care to elaborate?

      • +5

A "Black Mirror" reference. Clearly fell flat :( Sorry.

Hario does the same and cheaper

    • Yup, was about to post the same item. Still waiting for delivery.

It doesn't though. This has an auto start timer feature. It's also more water resistant.

      • Do you find the auto start on the timer actually useful? Genuine question, because coffee machines I've used have some sort of pre-infusion which will throw out the shot time if only counting from the first drops of coffee.

        • +1

For pourover it's a good feature and arguably this is not really an espresso sized scale.

Most consider preinfusion part of the shot time, yes, so it's value there is not as high. But if you're comparing your own shot to shot consistency it can still be useful.

    • It's nowhere near as good… The Timemore resolves the weight very quickly, whilst the Hario is very, let's say, ponderous about telling you how much things weigh.

For those that wanna know why this matters - you don't just weigh coffee, you weigh the water as you're pouring it, and when there's a delay from the scales you've blown the pouring window for your v60!

  • Purchased the exact same construction from aliexpress for around $40, albeit quite some time ago. Worth having a look

  • Can someone recommend me a reasonably priced coffee beans container? I currently just use a clamp on the bag.

    • -1
      • I have those. I thought beans release CO2, so it shouldn't be a tight container, it may explode? (which is why there is a valve in the bag that the beans are sold in?)

And I thought it needed to be blacked out to avoid getting light?

        • so it shouldn't be a tight container, it may explode?

Only shortly after roasting. I use a big Moconna jar. Have never noticed any pressure build.

it needed to be blacked out to avoid getting light?

Yes, if you don't have a pantry or cupboard.

    • I used to reuse one way valve bags (after cleaning them out). Works well but bit of a hassle.

Now I just freeze the entire bag and take out what I need for 3 to 7 days depending on the beans. Doesn't matter what container and what the weather is doing to them either. Keep in mind the resting time before you freeze them.

    • The breville bean keeper? Not extremely cheap but still reasonably price IMO. I have already bought 2 and they are pretty good.

  • Great scale.

  • thought its a weight scale

  • Is this Walter White approved?

Posting mostly so that people are aware with a sample size of 1. I bought this about 3 years ago, had been working like a trooper fit under the BDB well even with a 300ml latte cup.

2 months ago something weird happen, I think one of the force plates must’ve been damaged in one corner and it no longer was accurate if placing a cup in the middle.

Experimented with it a little and found that to be reason because the opposite corner would work fine. So now I’m weighing on one of the corners.

Will replace in the future but workaround is acceptable at this stage.

    • What's the battery life like vs how often do you use it ?

      • +1

I use it for 2-3x espresso based coffees per day and the battery life is usually 3-4 weeks.

  • Why would you not consider something a third of the price?

    Am I missing anything?

    • Reviews seem to indicate inconsistency in weights and delayed response time to changes in weight - two things you don't really want if you're hoping to fine-tune espresso. You can definitely get away with that if you're not too anal about things. The Timemore is a fairly widely used, known entity with decent reliability. It's then another pretty big step up to Acaia scales.

Bought $10 scale from Amazon and works fine for espresso shots, dunno why ppl spend so much on these scale let alone those $300 ones.

    • Do you have a link? Is is responsive to weight changes?

    • They look cooler?

Plus I guess the timer or whatever some have. Sometimes they do have more features.

But yeah, while I got one of these (which I hope I paid less than this for) ages ago to replace a < $15 one, it really was money I didn't have to spend. The cheaper one was accurate to 2 decimal places, whereas this one is only one, and that does my OCD in sometimes when it's hunting between numbers. Plus it was smaller so easier to get under the portafilter with a cup.

But like I said, it was all black and like a single piece, so it looked cooler…

    • I've been through enough cheap ones that if I just bought a nice one, hopefully it would last longer.

This one is too big for espresso unless you have a large machine, but I believe it's mostly waterproof.

The cheaper ones I've had have broken a little too easily.

As for the mega expensive ones… I don't know, not for me - I've never seen the need for a smart scale, but it may improve some people's lives, especially in a professional barista setting.

I guess that take away is that not all scales are created equal, and some are expensive and terrible, some are cheap and good, but most of the cheap ones are terrible (in my experience).

I've enjoyed the USB charging on this, the long battery life, and the quick weight readings. I also have enjoyed the timer, which a cheaper set of Amazon scales I bought did have, but the weight readings were wildly inaccurate and the time wasn't nearly as fun to use.

I've already gotten about a year out of them, which is longer than the cheapies I had.
