About this item

  • This heatsink is designed specifically for the internal M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD in the PlayStation 5.
  • Compatible with both the PS5 Ultra HD and Digital editions and fits 2280/22110 M.2 SSDs, including single-sided and dual-sided M.2 SSDs.
  • It includes a Φ 5.5mm heat pipe and a large aluminum heatsink that fully covers the internal M.2 slot in the PS5. Its design allows for efficient heat dissipation, resulting in a 10°C-30°C cooling effect.
  • To install the heatsink, you will need included copper standoff, included thermal pad, and included screw. The copper standoff supports the M.2 SSD in a level position, while the thermal pad ensures full contact between the M.2 SSD and the lower surface of the heatsink.

Is that really necessary? I've had a m.2 without heatsink installed in my ps5 for at least 6 months without any issues.

no one knows for sure, but it feels good, like you did something meaningful for once

    • I read once that read/write speeds are affected under high temperatures.

You are absolutely correct that M.2 SSDs are software throttled if they overheat. Otherwise they could be damaged and fail prematurely. An SSD might not be overheating, or it could be overheating and throttling itself to prevent damage, and the user would only know if they noticed some slowing down.

The question though is what it takes to overheat one. If they overheat during normal operation then a heatsink should be fitted. But if they only overheat during extreme use then they probably aren't required by most people.

The faster an SSD is the more power they would use even during normal operation and so the more likely they would be to overheat. Sp gen5's are more likely to need a heatsink than gen4s, and they are more likely to need one that a gen 3, and a SATA SSD is probably not going to need a heatsink in any circumstance.

        • Overheating was my concern when i decided to get one. But after some research it appears that PS5 never really pushes it hard enough to ever overheat ot trigger throttling. This is based on some testing someone did and posted the findings. I'll try to find the article again.

I think it's probably nice to have for peace of mind but not necessary. Worst case t fails and you have to download all the games again.

    • M2 SSDs don't normally overheat, they throttle themselves down and go slower. Long write operations in particular can make them crawl to an agonising speed if they're not cooled properly.

  • This was the price of this two months ago when I bought mine

can I use this on the Mrs when she gets upset that I game too much ?

  • I'm glad it will work with my PS5 Ultra HD and I didn't buy just the digital version.
