  • Good price.

  • Anyone know if you can pull out the hard drive?

      Why would you bother ?

MSY have the Hitachi 2TB @ $69 on special

      • link please.. I've looked on the MSY website and cannot find that price anywhere

        • me too, where is it, would take one. Hard drive is hard drive, I don't care about brands, just used to store movies and games.

          until it dies

Got my hopes up there. Found it in this. Fyshwick ACT. No chance.

          http://www.msy.com.au/Parts/fyshwick.pdf

      • Dear geek7899 :Could you please post a link. I would like to buy one if it is true…

Generally when someone posts something "amazing price @ MSY" its clearance and 90% of their stores are out of stock.

Anyway, my process - goto www.staticice.com.au and find out whether the item is a clearance item, it will be prefixed with (STATE Store Clearance) Item eg, (QLD Slacks Creek Clearance) Hitachi 3.5" Deskstar 2TB SATA HDD 5400RPM.

From there all the clearance PDFs are located at http://www.msy.com.au/clearance.jsp.

          Hope this helps.

Just think how much MSY would sell if you didn't have to be a certified cryptologist to navigate their website!

        • I almost think it's done on purpose. The time consuming customers who come in and spend 15 minutes with staff to buy a $50 item are scared away by the price list.

        Not in this price list?

      • MSY??? NO THANKS!!!

        • +3

I have never had a problem with them… if you know what you want they are fine…. even had a warranty issue with a hard drive, went in, they tested to confirm it was RS and swapped on the spot.

Not sure which particular model it is, but the answer seems to be a tentative yes.

      • from that vid the drive was a WD Caviar Green - the cost of a 2TB WD Caviar Green from MSY is $104 (normal price, not clearance price) so if you're after this just to pull the HDD it is cheaper and easier to just buy the drive.

        • agreed, and you're not voiding warranty in the process.

        • $104 for cash, or add 2% for credit card. $106.08 versus $109 for CC at Officeworks. Want the bare drive? Just buy the drive. Want a drive in a case? This is a bargain.

        • Are there any warranty stickers on the HP drive? Couldn't tell from watching the video on mute.

        • No stickers, but it looks like a snap lock case with plastic tabs. Opening it without damage may be difficult.

I searched HP's website for this particular drive's rpm:

    http://www8.hp.com/au/en/hp-search/search.html?nores=true&qt…

    Couldn't find anything.

Anyone able to ascertain the speed please?

    • +2

WD Green, so around 5900rpm. Green drives don't have a set speed as they vary by batch. Plugging in such a drive into SMART utils returns 'undefined' for RPM.

      • When I purchased the Samsung Smart TV, I called up Samsung asking for what type of external HDD it'd be able to efficiently utilise…

I was told anything up to 1.5 TB. I was also told that it should have 7200 rpm, for faster recognition, or buffer, or whatever it was he said back then…

Despite this being 2 TB, I was willing to take the risk, as it is an awesome price, and could be used as a nice external for my pc, as a backup drive, if it didn't work on the telly.

However, if it is a hit and miss (i.e. speeds varying with batches), I think I will scratch this off my wishlist unfortunately. I work with large files, and would really rather the faster revs.

Ah well… can't have it all I guess.

Methinks you were read a script by a sales droid.

Recording and playing back TV is something that even the slowest of slow hard drives should be able to do. Even for a high-def channel at 5GBytes/hour, that's only 1.4Mbytes per second. A class 4 SD card would be able to handle this data rate! Twice and a bit more! Hard drives a much faster at writing than SD cards, so should have no difficulty.

The only possible case, as far as I can see, where a hard drive would be taxed on a "smart" TV, would be playing back a recorded program while recording another simultaneously. If the recorded program was at the start of the hard drive, and the new recording was towards the end, the seek times could be significant, as the hard drive-head would be forever moving between the two locations. Smart TVs probably have minimal RAM for buffering the video data, so a drive with faster seek time could possibly help. However, hard drives nowadays usually have enough buffer memory of their own to hold several seconds of high-def video, so this argument doesn't seem very plausible.

I'll stick with my original assumption: you were read a script by a sales droid.

        • I dunno alot of TV's encrypt the data which may make it larger or harder to both process and send to the drive… could be an issue with the tv rather than the drive meaning it needs a faster speed.

        • Encrypted data is only slightly larger than the original (header, etc), and the drive doesn't care whether you're writing random data to the drive or all zeros. It takes the same amount of time.

I bought one (for $119) last week. Can confirm it's a WD Green drive inside.

The case is rather bulky but that ensures excellent ventilation all around the drive.

  • is this one better than this seagate for the same price? http://m.dicksmith.com.au/Product/XH9888/SEAGATE-Expansion-2…

    • Yes. That's USB2, this is USB3 and backwards compatible.

      • thanks boss..sending misses to pick up this bad boy tomorrow been looking for a cheap drive for a while ;-]

  • Looks like a good price for 2TB extra storage and backup.

  • Bought one of these a month ago has been hanging of el cheapo BT downloader 24/7 not a single issue for 109 its a darn good bargain

  • Why get this fat bastard of a HDD? There was a 2.5" WD 2TB that I'm certain your wife would approve of more. I never get why people bother with these - big bulky with a fat adapter.

    • +3

I don't think wives are that impressed with 2.5" ones (tiny adaptors) ;-)

    • +4

If you buy computer components based on "wife's approval" then you're doing it wrong.

    • +4

3.5" drives are cheaper per tebibyte..

  • Very timely. Thanks, bender!

  • these are so pretty if you have a few of them , great buy

  • It'd be nice to get like 4 of the 2.5" 500gb hard drives and put them in a raid 0 configuration and just backup that collective drive to this 2Tb every week or so.

  • +1

Software is really easy to use. One click, backs up all your files. PDF, JPG, AVI, ZIP, 7Z etc.

Benchmarks at about 32MB/S over USB2.0

  • Thanks-got one today at Penrith. They had a stack marked at $119 but they scan at $109. Need them for a stack of pics and keep separate from all the other junk!!

    • I'm buying one for my porn collection too.

      • Please keep your fantasies to yourself Ace.

      • +5

I'm buying one for my porn collection too.

        Only one?

  • much more reliable than Seagate ones…good price

  • is this compatible with mac as well,,,,

    • Quote: In order to be compatible with Mac you will need to reformat the device, however, it will earse all the pre-loaded SimplSave software comes with hard drive.

  • Can anyone provide a benchmark for USB3 transfer speed?
