The Western Digital SN740 is a solid-state drive in the M.2 2230 form factor, launched on May 9th, 2022. It is available in capacities ranging from 256 GB to 2 TB. This page reports specifications for the 1 TB variant. With the rest of the system, the Western Digital SN740 interfaces using a PCI-Express 4.0 x4 connection. The SSD controller is the 20-82-10081-A1 from WD, a DRAM cache is not available. Western Digital has installed 112-layer TLC NAND flash on the SN740, the flash chips are made by Toshiba. To improve write speeds, a pseudo-SLC cache is used, so bursts of incoming writes are handled more quickly. Thanks to support for the fast PCI-Express 4.0 interface, performance is excellent. The SN740 is rated for sequential read speeds of up to 5,150 MB/s and 4,900 MB/s write; random IO reaches 740K IOPS for read and 800K for writes.

I wouldn't buy western brand name stuff from ali.
Hapy to punt on stuff, not the good stuff.

I have 2 in steam decks and have had no issues with them at all.
They were brand new as far as my testing went.

    • I'll also vouch, have a 2tb one from AliExpress running in my Robo&Kala (surface pro alternative - look it up!) as its sole drive. Working just fine. Super happy with it.

  • WD Sn740 vs Samsung P991a for steam deck? Which one would you recommend?

    • Whatever is cheaper. Performance in the steam deck should be on par. WD if you want the 2TB though.

    • You'll get about a 5-8% difference on steam deck for 1tb SN740 vs Samsung P991a
But you wont notice it at all with general usage.
I get the SN740 because I'm a spec nerd, but you'll do just as fine with the P991a

    • I've heard the WD one draws a little bit more power but it probably doesn't matter.

I'm got the Samsung P991a 1tb and it's worked flawlessly with my Steam Deck.

    • I've got the Samsung P991a 1tb and it's worked flawlessly with my Steam Deck.

I chose it over the WD because it was the cheaper one at the time.

Just go with whichever is cheaper.

  • Anyone found the 2TB variant? Close to the deal last time?

Found this, which I guess is close enough, but about $11USD pricier than last time.

Final edit, ended up getting this for $113USD given the exchange rate $178.09AUD via Revolut from Paypal.

Both of the listings cannot stack the codes, though only got $18 off from Spend and Save

  • Thanks @K33N ! Your link plus BTS12 worked and have brought the price down to AUD $170.28 for me. I think the 1TB is also cheaper with this seller. I tried posting this deal on Ozbargain but it won’t let me. So hope others find this deal here!

    • Very nice, yeah BTS12 just didn't work for me, said I cannot combine the offers (on both of the listings).
But very good that someone got it working, though.

  • I figured out the issue regarding stacking coupons. If you have the "welcome deal" then it blocks you from receiving the BTS coupon. It might be worthwhile using the "welcome deal" first then cancelling it and repurchasing it.
