Kicking off from 5pm AEST on Monday 21st is the latest AliExpress sale where you'll get these automatic discounts on selected products at checkout. Normally the 'Spend & Save' discounts are US$3 off every US$30 up to US$90, so this sale is much better than usual.

Eligible products have this banner on them and the discount can be used multiple times. It stacks with AliExpress coupons, store coupons and cashback.

  • thanks! something i had my eye on is displaying the banner. just need to wait to make sure they don't jack the price to coincide with the sale.

and of course i hope the AU dollar will surge in the meantime …

    • The listing should give you a sale preview price. Most of the time that'll be correct.

  • Perfect, the carts been growing for a couple of months now. Knew something like this was coming and glad that it starts low as I the cart is mostly small crap, cable, adapters and some supplies.

BTW, and recommendations for a cheap Andriod tablet. Some around 10" or smaller. It as one use, sheet music. Cheap means like ~$150 AUD

I'll be dropping a few Android tablets around the A$200 mark. I'll see if I can dig up something cheaper since the exchange rate is shit.

      • Yeah, see what you find. If all the sub $150 tablets are are POS then I'm going to have to spend more, what can I do.

I'll have a look as well and look at reviews in all the usual places. I tend to use techtablets, been following his reviews since he had nothing more than a website living in NZ…that was a very long time ago.

        • Can certainly get below $150 but they will be a POS in the CPU department.

Unfortunately Techtablets is more Techscooters now since brands aren't sending him free stuff anymore. Maybe it's my time to shine 😏

          • @Clear: hahahaha..yeah noticed that too. I wonder why. Isn't a escooter more expensive to buy and ship to send out samples compare to a tablet or a mini-PC.

Maybe he doesn't care to review tablets anymore. Just got back from southern Europe and eScooters are so popular now, esp. with with high school students..much more then here in Sydney. Xiaomi seems to be a very popular brand.

@mrhugo: I've spoken to him about it a while ago. Seems he was too honest about tablet flaws and brands no longer want to send him freebies for that reason. They'd rather send to the yes men shills on YouTube who won't say anything negative. He's even been blacklisted by Xiaomi.

A lot of the scooter brands have EU warehouses so they're not losing big amounts sending to him. There's definitely more money in scooters right now.

    • Lots of generic ones for $80-90 on AE and eBay, Lenovo from ~$125 on eBay (from experience they’re easy to root and remove all the bloatware)

  • @Clear, why do you have the price in USD?

My order (I've only ordered once from them) was charged (and prices shown) in AUD. Or do you deliberately have it set to USD? Is there any benefit of shopping in USD? 🤔

    • +2

The USD price never fluctuates while the AUD price does. If you have a card without currency conversion fees you'll see the most benefit.

Set AliExpress to USD, checkout with PayPal, select the card, click Currency Options and bill the card in USD. Then you'll get the current exchange rate. Otherwise the AliExpress AUD rate of PayPal's exchange rate will be inflated.

      • Ooh, I see. I did not know that. Now I understand why people people post and talk about buying stuff on AliExpress in USD here. Thanks 🙂

        One question, though:

Set AliExpress to USD, checkout with PayPal, select the card, click Currency Options and bill the card in USD

If I bill the card in USD, wouldn't the exchange rate be set to the bank's (card provider) exchange rate? I have found that Westpac currently have 1 AUD = 0.61 USD, while PayPal has 1 AUD = 0.62 USD. The current exchange rate seems to be 1 AUD = 0.64 USD.

So, it seems better to use PayPal's foreign exchange compared to bank's. No?

        • If you have a 28 degrees CC then the fx rate may be more favourable. They also don't typically charge fees - https://www.mastercard.us/en-us/personal/get-support/convert…

          • @debitbankcharges: I have a Westpac Travel Card, and I believe they don’t have any foreign transaction/currency conversion fees either.

What I am hung on is whether they use Mastercard’s FX rates or their own if I make a USD transaction but have AUD in my account. I believe they’ll use Mastercard’s rates (because the card is Mastercard-issued, and because of what ‘Clear’ said above) but I am not sure. I guess I’ll have to make a transaction and find out. 🙂

westpac charges a foreign currency fee on top? for overseas purchases, get a card with no foreign currency fees https://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/cards_with_no_overseas_tra…

i use macquarie mastercard debit card, no foreign currency fees, 4.5% interest paid (but no eftpos). uses mastercard's conversion rates: https://www.mastercard.us/en-us/personal/get-support/convert…

          • @c64: I don’t think they charge currency conversion/foreign transaction fees on their Westpac Travel Card.

            • @Nelumbo: in any case, their exchange rate seems very low if what you stated is accurate. maybe they use their own (lower) rates

plug in the details of a previous transaction or two into the mastercard currency converter for comparison. US date/times are used - you might need to fiddle with your date/time, eg +/-1 day of the purchase date

for example, today (18th) the exchange rate is 0.6377

              • @c64: No, no, their exchange rate is actually not that good. I ended up using a Macquarie debit card to make (my first) USD transaction. Thanks for pointing out that information in your comment above :)

Be careful about Aliexpress’ refund policy. I requested refund three times due to poor product quality/ Item not as described. On all occasions I had to pay for return shipping to some very unusual address. None of the returned items were received by seller and refund rejected despite my appeals. Be very careful buying things on Aliexpress!
