D-Link Wireless N300 Router (DIR-615) - $22 @ Harvey Norman

810

Pretty self-explanatory. Looks like an okay dual-antenna wireless-N router with 4 10/100 ethernet ports. Note that it is not a modem.

D-Link product page: http://www.dlink.com.au/products/?pid=565

Seems to be in-stock online and in most stores.

I don't think its sold at ow

  • +3

Looks like it supports DDWRT which would be a big advantage over the Belkin. Well spotted - might grab one for wireless bridging.

  • Yes, looks like DDWRT support. Great price for that alone.

    • +2

Why? Can someone explain why DDWRT is something to get excited about. Especially for bridging.
Maybe someone Give me a reason to spend my money.

      • +3
      • By the time you get that reason, it'll be all gone lol

        • +3

it doesn't support bridging under ddwrt

its not a fantastic router even with ddwrt

i think the linksys ones beat it under ddwrt

i got one of these for free and its not that hard to flash under ddwrt

i'm surprised at all these 2009/2010 spec routers that are coming out of the woodwork… they must sit in the warehouse until someone finds them and wants them gone

        • +1

Wait, so if I buy this to install DD-WRT and use it as a bridge, I'm going to have a bad time?

        • btw. the reason why i got this router for free is that I consult for a company that only uses Macs and they couldnt get it working… they werent all clued up on networks and stuff

i then found out it doesn't support some iMacs (I don't know why)

anyway I configged some other routers for them and got rid of all their dlinks

i do not know if the dlink + ddwrt supports Macs (I dont see why it shouldnt but nothing about dlink surprises me)

a quick google shows that client bridge doesnt seem to work but repeater bridge might

also it might work better on E but not on version C (do you really want to delve into this crap rather than buy a Linksys where it just works out of the box?)

          just checking now:

on my linksys it actually works as intended

there's an option for 'client bridge' but it does nothing

          lol!

        • What do you mean it doesn't support bridging? Seems to be working over here under dd-wrt.

  • +2

lol I wasn't even going to buy one myself because I'm looking for one with gigabit ports but after seeing the DD-WRT support I've reserved 2.

  • Just picked one up from martin place store. Listed price was $139.95! Was more than 10 left in store.

    • +2

Dont let their listed price fool you!!! Normal price is around $35 for this according to staticice

      • +1

Yeah definately not fooled by it. More shocked by the high listed price.

I thought this was what HN was best known for…

  • What's DD-WRT?

  • Which hardware versions are HN selling? And which is best?

    C1, C2
    CPU:Atheros AR9130@400Mhz
    Wireless NIC:Atheros AR9102 2x2 MIMO
    RAM:32M
    Flash:4M

    D1, D2, D3, D4
    CPU:Ralink RT3052F@384Mhz
    Wireless NIC:Ralink
    RAM:32M
    Flash:4M

    E1, E3, E4
    CPU:Atheros AR7241@400Mhz
    Wireless NIC:Atheros AR9283
    RAM:32M
    Flash:4M

    • HN Campbelltown is selling hardware version E4 with firmware version 5.10. All the boxes have "Not for Retail Sale" stickers attached.

      • Does this have detachable antennae? From what I can gather only version C2 has detachable antennae.

  • I have a Belkin Modem Router as my main unit. Then I have a another Belkin Modem Router which I want to connect so I can boost wireless access. I am looking for another on to boost single even more (Big House but its like a bunker, wiress rang not good)

Can This unit do what I am after? Can you boost you wifi range doing what I want to do?

    • +1

Yes- it should be easy with DD-wrt is a custom firmware for a router that will give it features and security equivalent to a far more expensive one. It takes some technical skills, but nothing out of the ordinary!

This router will simply receive the signal, the relay it using DCHP.

Here's how to set it up…
      http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Repeater_Bridge

  • I just noticed that it is draft N compared to certified N as in current products. Dont know whether it would make any difference

    • The one I just purchased is fully N-certified.

Thanks op, just ordered a couple for collection Melbourne CBD.

Did anyone else get the Out of Offce reply from one of their employees after ordering online? I replied back saying I hope Gordon is having a lovely holiday ;) That is so Hardly Normal

    • Hmmm, from what I remember when I was working as a supplier, Mr Nugent is pretty high up in HN group…

    • I got the same email

    • I got the same email also, click and collect from Launceston store.

  • Greatttt… just bought the Belkin. Although I suppose I can just return it to OW, since I haven't opened it. So with DD-WRT this can act as a bridge/repeater, instead of just a wired access point, is that correct? However you need to install/flash the router first for this to work, yes?

I'm renting a 3 floor terrace house, and it's an old G wireless modem/router that's on the first floor, and the 3rd floor gets pretty bad reception. Will it be better to get this and use it as a repeater on the 2nd floor, or just hard-wire the Belkin nearby, and hope it reaches the 3rd floor?

No real need to do anything fancy with the wireless, just need to make the signal stronger/maybe faster. Any suggestions to the experts out there? Thanks in advance.

    • +1

3 floors? you must be loaded. why not just get an extender?

      • Or heaps of relis.

        • ive just came home with a neatgear range extender. literally took less than 1 minute to setup. press 2 buttons and im done. yes its 3x the price but must less hassle. still trying to get my dir632 to repeat my wifi - it kinda works but not 100% sure

      • No, live with 3 other housemates, and it's a really skinny terrace house. The owner is loaded, I'm an ozbargainer. :)

Crap, so the Belkin won't help me at all? Is what I need an extender? Or can I connect the Belkin as an access point (so separate wireless network, I guess), and hope it reaches the 3rd floor?

Or do I really need to get an extender?

        • you would need to run cables with the $19 belkin router.
an extender/repeater would help you without hassles (make sure its g compatible)
or you can get this dir615 and flash it with ddwrt and some mess around with settings

    • Wireless G covers the house but bottom floor to top floor is bad?
Switch to wireless N, and put it on floor 2.

Considering your situation you may like to look into Ethernet Over Power (not yo be confised with Power over Ethernet).

  • anyone have the link to ddwrt install guide for this router?

  • So by using this to boost my wifi signal, would it have to be connected to my main Modem Router (Belkin N300) by ethernet cable or will it connect via wifi? Also will the ethernet ports on this modem work while its boosting the wifi range?

I would like to boost the wifi range and also connect things to the ethernet ports such as XBOX etc.

    • wifi. thats what everyone is trying to do

      • So it will connect via wifi, but can it also work connect via ethernet?

Will the ethernet ports work too?

        • not sure about the ethernet part. it doesnt interest me so i didnt read up on it. go through the ddwrt forums

    • remember a repeater cuts your speed in half.

      • So whats the best way to boost my wifi?

        • Tried powerline? Might be a good option to do a powerline link to another floor, and pop your second wireless router there.

YMMV hugely on powerline but it might do the trick.

There is also this cheap $1 available from a different store

    http://www.centrecom.com.au/catalog/n10u-online-exclusive-as…

    • Shipping to Queensland (cost from): $19.8

      • It's $8.25 to Melbourne which is reasonable, but other states it seems a bit expensive.

        • Is store pickup available?

EDIT: Just checked, can't see a instore pickup option.

    • This is only N150 as opposed to N300 on the DIR-615 but does have the advantage of being 8MB flash (even though specs say 4MB) so it will take the DD-WRT mega builds.

Handy if you want VOIP, VPN etc all on your router. I've got one and it's not a bad bit of kit.

  • Is this better performance than Office works deal

  • I need something similar but one that has a usb print option. Any thoughts?

      • thanks, but that is n150 only and doesnt support ipv4. any other suggestions?

        • Not support IPv4? How is that possible? Did you mean IPv6?

        • yep, thats what i meant. sorry :(

        • It supports IPv6 via Tomato or DDWRT, what do you need it for?

Also I wouldn't expect any cheap routers to actually provide even 50Mbps throughput using wireless. If you really need the speed maybe get the Asus N66u
          http://staticice.com.au/cgi-bin/search.cgi?q=asus+n66u

        • You mean the N66U? The N66 isn't supposed to function as a router…

        • Yeah sorry n66u, was wondering why it looked so cheap on staticice

  • Good deal, just got it from HN Garden City Mt Gravatt (QLD). Officeworks across the carpark had none left of the Belkin, even though their website said it was in Stock. HN had 15+ of these D-Links.

    • what version do you have? coz, I'm going to pick it up one from this store.

      • It says:
Hardware Version: C2 Firmware Version: 3.01

I just got 2 from QV Melb.

    1 x C2
    1 x E4

    • Which one has detachable antennas?

      • The E definitely does. I'd be surprised if the C doesn't but will check tonight.

  • Not available, and they do not stock this model at the 2 JB-HIFI stores in Parramatta 2150 as well as Office Works and DSE, none stock the 615 :( my legs are the worse for wear for it.

Great deal though OP I just wish i could get one

  • Why not go to Hn? Order one from Internet and pick it up from your preferred Hn store

  • Was trying to resist buying this all afternoon but just couldt let it go lol just reserved one online to pickup instore ozbargain strikes my wallet again lol :)

    • +1

The one on sale was/is part of a promo that's supposed to be sold with "computer hardware and peripherals". Box also has "ENHANCED" down the front. Not sure if hardware and warranty is otherwise the same.

HN Moore Park had it ticketed at $37 as part of the Footy Finals deal!

      • +1

HN at Liverpool had it marked for $156 before I asked them to check the system. The cost price as I saw on the system was $17, supposedly making a $5 profit :)

      • The one I got was a retail box with $128 on it.

  • I just got hold of the Belkin Surf N300 for under $20, but have already ordered one of these puppies for PU- for $22 I think I will give DD-WRT a go. Sounds interesting.

  • Well I loaded up the dd-wrt firmware quite easily this evening using the link posted below (http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/DIR-615C).

For shts and giggles I followed this guide (http://www.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=701026) and got client 'bridge' mode working. DIR-615 was connected to my 7800N via wireless and my PC connected via wired ethernet to the DIR-615. Worked beautifully on firmware build 15778 and no DNS configuration needed.

Next tried wireless bridge mode to expand wireless coverage using the DIR-615. Tipped off by this post (http://www.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=709354) I got it working using E3 firmware 14896.

After all that I'm going to be using it as a second AP with wired ethernet backhaul lol.

    • the thing is, if the ssid and password is the same for both modem/router and dir615, how do you know exactly which device you are connected to? thats the problem im having

      • You can set the virtual AP to a different SSID. It doesn't have to be the same.

    • atlas thank you for the information!

I have a friend who needs a router to wirlessly connect to his network and then allow for the ethernet ports to provide internet access to connect to his xbox to avoid paying for the grosly overpriced wirless adaptor ($150).

I thought this would be 'Repeater Bridge mode' via dd-wrt however from what I have read about that you need to flash your primary router with dd-wrt firmware aswell, I dont want to mess with the primary router aswell as the fact it is a netgear and unsupported by dd-wrt.

The thing is that what you describe above seems to do what my friend needs 3 different ways, so I am wondering what way is the best? and most importantly a way that I can just use this DIR-615 without making any changes to the primary modem/router (netgear).

Making it an wirless AP that also alows for ethernet would seem like the way to go to do this, but I am unsure on how to do that, any feedback you can give would be greatly appreciated, and if its too much to post on this, feel free to pm me :)

      • I haven't got a netgear router to test so I can't guarantee it will work.

Having said that, I didn't have to change a thing on my Billion 7800N to get any of the above working.

Note there are confusing differences in the terminology. First you need to create a 'wireless bridge' between the two routers. Then you need to decide if you want the second router to allow clients to connect via both wired and wireless or just one.

From what you've said, you don't want to shell out for a wireless adaptor for the xbox so I presume you only need wired connections for the second router.

In that case you probably just need to follow the client 'bridge' mode guide: http://www.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=701026

        • Hey atlas, would you know how I can make the dir 615 E4 to work both wired and wireless?
Tried many way, but only managed to get it work as a client mode with wired connections from the link above. I had no luck with E3 firmware build 14896. Thanks.

        • I haven't tried yet but a quick google revealed this link http://www.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=153372

        • I had a look at that, that is for DIR 615 D4. D4 may be very different from E4 as there is no Repeater Bridge mode in E4. Thanks for helping out though.

        • someone from http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=13599.135 said E4 doesnt support repeater bridge mode because of antheros chip
but according to http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Atheros/ath_wireless_se… client bridge is equivalent to repeater bridge

        • +1

Thanks for the info I will give that a go!

at risk of sounding like a massive noob can you I think somone posted a tutorials link on how to install the custom firmware onto the router but do you know of any good tutorials or even a youtube video? I also notice alot of people metioning different versions to use, what one is the best for this router (link perhaps)

My main confusion in the process comes from some people mentioning to match the hex editor info in the last line with the firmware you use, I have no idea about that stuff I would assume since your flashing teh d-link as long as you can update the current version of the stick firmware on it should not matter?

          Thanks Again

        • client bridge IS the same as repeater bridge.

I have E4 version, and it's currently working under client bridge mode to extend my wireless signal from another router without any problem.

        • Can you please show me a link on how to set it up under client bridge mode to extend wireless signal. Thanks

        • I managed to get DIR 615 E4 to work as a client and extend the wireless signal. Client bridge don't seem to work for me. Using DD-WRT build 14896.
          - set up as client
          http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Client_Mode
          - If wired connection work
add Virtual AP. That work for me.

Make sure you flashed "Build 15778" on E4

          Follow steps 6 for Atheros

        • These all seem to be fairly old versions of the firmware mentioned in various comments above. Builds 15778 and 14896 date back to 2010.

Wouldn't the latest 2012 updates be a better choice to start with? For example:

          ftp://dd-wrt.com/others/eko/BrainSlayer-V24-preSP2/2012/07-2…

Or am I missing something here with regards to the versioning?

      • It's pretty easy to get a DD-WRT router to just run in a client mode - effectively it connects to any old wifi access point (by putting in the relevant connections details) and then you can plug ethernet devices into the 4 LAN sockets. I've had one behind my TV doing this for years to give wifi access to my bluray, games console, HTPC etc. which are all just ethernet.

There's tutorials knocking about and it only takes 5 mins. Much easier than having your router repeat the wifi signal if you don't need it to.

  • Anyone got ddwrt to work with DIR-615 4E. It seems the E firmware they have is for 3E.

    • I think they are virtually identical.

      I used E3 firmware on a E4 model.

      • +1

Yea, I just realized that. My misunderstanding was with the hex editor bit and the magic code. All sorted. I am finding the ddwrt firmware much clear and easy to use.

  • I received the C2 haerdware model with 3.0.1 firmware

Before you try doing the DDWRT update do you need to update the router to the latest firmware from the D-Link website?

How do you find the hardware ID of my firmware? I can't find anything that looks like AP81-AR9130-RT-070614-02

Thanks if anyone can help me.

    • Open up the stock firmware file with a hex editor. Look at the very last line.

      • depends on which hex editor you use
        the first one didnt work
the 2nd one did. forgot the names for both

      • So obviously you need to have the router on and connected to the computer via an Ethernet cable to check this?

If the firmware ID matches that of the file I had to download in part one of the procedure then I don't have to change anything?
