Excellent bonus, thanks for posting, just at the right time, when I need them :)

  • Has anyone done the math of whether this now makes sense to transfer to VA instead of SQ KrisFlyer - which I would value more particularly for SQ redemptions. There might be some sweet spots perhaps for certain routes or classes…

It's no where near, even with the bonus it's a terrible deal if you are going to be flying Singapore airlines.
      500k amex = 250k kris.
      500k amex = 250k velocity + 20% = 300k velocity.
      300k velocity = 193549 Kris

      • Can you redeem Singapore Airlines flights using velocity points directly?

        • yes.. seats are limited

          • @skinny: I think the difference between KrisFlyer and Velocity get closer when looking at points needed via velocity directly. Just checked and a reward seat in July 24 for SYD-FRA is:
            - Velocity: 75000 (equals 125k Amex points with 20% bonus)
            - KrisFlyer: 58500 (equals 117k Amex points)

So KrisFlyer still wins but it’s close and for me personally I rather keep the flexibility to be able and book Qatar as well. Also would still be able to transfer to Kris if needed for more rewards availability.

      • 300k velocity = 193549 Kris

        This seems incorrect.

You can transfer points/miles in either direction at a rate of 1.55 points/miles in the origin program, equating to one point/mile in the destination program

      *maths

  • Velocity points are harder to redeem compared to Qantas points domestically and even on international flights . I don’t value velocity points at all.

    • +6

Number of international flights I managed to redeem with points since Covid liberation is:

Velocity for Qatar Airways flights = 4 (economy)
Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer points = 5 (business)
Qantas points = 2 (with bloody Jetstar - never again)

      So… yeah, nah.

Based on the actual usability, my order of points by value is as follows:

Qatar > Singapore > Virgin > monopoly money > Qantas

Which is why you transfer them to krisflyer which is not hard to redeem at all. Velocity is awesome because of this.

      • Thanks for a interesting feedback

      • I usually transfer from Amex to velocity to have the options of either using them for Qatar or SQ reward flights. Outside of flying or Amex points it’s also easier to get additional velocity points via shopping and other credit card bonuses in Australia compared to KrisFlyer points.

You are losing heaps of points doing it that way.

Amex to QATAR - 3 Membership Rewards Points = 2 Avios.
Amex to Velocity - 2 Membership Rewards points = 1 Velocity Point

To give an example Sydney to Doha economy is 35k AVIOS points, in velocity it's 56k velocity points, and thats only if you can score a reward seat.

So amex to velocity would require a minimum of 112k amex points in order to redeem that flight via velocity.
Amex to AVIOS would require 52500 amex points to book directly with QATAR.

@matt1234: Thanks for the tip. I wasn’t aware of that difference between avios and velocity points when booking on the respective site. Sadly at the end of my Amex year so will cancel and reapply in 12 months for the next one with a good signup bonus…

  • any bonus for ANZ rewards?
