I think the RRP is overly exaggerated…

    • +1

Just like those LG OLED TVs

    • profit margins on audio are insane

    • Doesn't matter what you think , it's "recommend retail price".
      Don't like Don't buy

    • +2

Not the same, the sub in this package is the sw300, HN is sw100.

      • +3

I own one of the SW300s and it's predecessor - very good subs indeed.

That said I suspect the HN package will suffice for most.

        • +3

          Different front speakers also !!!

    Leftover stock from the 80s?

    • +1

      yes, 1880s

    • +3

hahaha I would have loved to have had this setup back in the 90's. 5.1 is still my go to configuration in the lounge room.

  • shit, too late.
    I already ordered Sony HT-A9.

    • Lucky we sell plenty of those as well :)

    • I would love to hear your thoughts on this, as I will be moving soon and I will probably need a wireless set up. Shame as I do like my AE wired speakers which I bought about 10 years ago.

  • How does something like this compare to a Samsung soundbar like the Q990C?

    • +4

Just my personal opinion….I don't think dedicated speakers will ever be beaten by the "virtual" ones'. I myself have moved from a similar system like this to the HT-A9's with sub. While I'm quite happy with the system I got, if I had the chance to lay the wire, I'd move back to dedicated speakers in a heart-bit. Cheers.

      • Ditto..moved from a 5.1 to q990c which is 11.1.4
I feel its a slightly inferior experience with the soundbar

        • It just goes to show how far soundbars have improved over the last decade. You are also dealing with less clutter and not having to route and hide speaker wire (I hide mine under a carpet rug). I still prefer a tradition 2 channel stereo or 5.1 SS system but it's not necessary to have that much gear for good sound anymore.

          • +1

@Windows7forever: Yep. I have a soundbar system and the quality of sound vs the ease of setup is a trade off I'm happy to make.

@Sxio: And saving my marriage is a bonus I guess ha ha..

              • +1

@illidan: Hahaha. That may have been on my mind too!

  • I've listened to a similar set up - it's pretty awesome. It wouldn't take a fancy Amp to drive these really, a solid middle of the range AV receiver will be fine.

The only downside is if you want to go the Dolby Atmos path, more speakers would be required.

    • +1

Try telling the Mrs that Mr Dolby demands you buy more speakers!

  • ive been getting old speakers for cheap from savers lmao, $1k is a bit too expensive for my budget, but $3 for a pair of slightly beat up but perfectly functional tower speakers? love it

    • Savers?

      • a chain of thrift stores in australia, they can be pretty hit or miss on prices but you can get lucky and find a really good deal every now and then

    • +2

You can put together a perfectly good system from donated speakers and curbside finds. It's not uncommon to see reasonably high quality old audio gear that has been chucked out on the side of the road. I'd recommend buying a decent amp to run the whole system.

      • yeah im using a yamaha reciever i bought off a friend to run it all

    • The other option is to use PA speakers like the Behringer 215XL…you'll get dynamics that are comparable to an actual movie theatre at a lower cost than so-called "home theatre" systems. Only downside is the WAF.

      • …like the Behringer 215XL

These have been measured and reviewed and I wouldn't use those.

        • There's a thread over on avsforum that's about 10 years old with thousands of posts… plenty of reviews from experienced home theatre enthusiasts that claim these are amazing (for creating a cinematic sound, not for 2 channel hifi music). I own them, having owned scores of speakers over 30 years, including very highly priced and reviewed hifi speakers…these beat everything I've ever owned in terms of vocal intelligibility and limitless dynamics (which are imo much more important than a perfectly flat frequency response graph). You won't know till you try…I wish I had have tried pa speakers (large woofer, compression driver/horn) much earlier…they leave small dome/cone speakers for dead in terms of reproducing the dynamics of a cinema. Check out the thread… worth a read

          • @amiafish: Yes, I'm aware of that thread.

I don't doubt their value proposition but I remain unconvinced that they are quite as good as some claim.

It would make for an interesting in-person comparison with speakers from some home cinema focused brands (eg. Krix, Procella, Klipsch).

            • @ChiefAJ: Yep. There's quite a few blind tests recounted in that thread…egg on faces with speakers multiples more expensive than the Behringers being evaluated as worse than them.

All I can say is that my experience matches that…dynamics are so much more cinematic than cone/done speakers. JBL M2s will do the same thing, with better FR measurement, at 20 times the cost….

  • What amp would you guys recommend for these speakers? Cheers

  • All i'm after is that sub (NS-SW300). If you can do it for the same price from this deal in April (inc. free p/h) please let me know.
