Usual (not on sale) Club price is $39. RRP price seems ridiculous for $149

Bunnings selling Esky 52L Wheeled Hard Cooler for $109!!

$39 is a good price, but I find it hard to believe that anyone ever paid $149 for this.

is anaconda similar to house/kitchen warehouse?

Anaconda and BCF in my opinion are deceptive in their practices with their retail vs club price.
Heres a recent ozbargain post while not Anaconda by BCF that would have you believe their fishing tools bucket was reduced from $99 to $29.99 when in reality the regular price is $34.99.

Totally agree and I’m not sure how these deceptive practices are allowed within the Australian Consumer Law. I’m sure someone on here can elaborate?

      • +6

Theoretically not allowed, but there's multiple points of arguments or loopholes as to whether they're purposely 'deceiving' consumers.

Falls under S18 of Australian consumer law, misleading and deceptive conduct in trade or commerce.

On the face of it, the practice of listing the 'RRP' at retail level is very common (set my wholesaler/manufacturer), but the product itself never truly sells for RRP. So if a retailer says RRP $100, now selling for $20 (80% off), when their usual price is $50, they're technically not misleading but only quoting manufacturer RRP.

Unsure in this instance regarding this Anaconda deal.

        Hope that makes sense.

The only real issue occurs when the retailer is also the manufacturer. Kathmandu in NZ were fined for quoting RRP but never selling those products at RRP.

          • +4

@sween64: Retailers can list “RRP” without a lot of issue. Where they can get into hot water is not having a list of proven sales at a higher price when they say “was $x” or “save $y”.

Truth is, the hot water is a slap on the wrist.

edit: this is true for AU. I don’t know much about consumer / retail / pricing law in NZ.

    • There are a lot of furniture places doing a similar thing - they sell items like couches that have their own branding, and they have 'normally $xx' 'usually $yy' or simply a higher price crossed out, then the supposed discount price. I was using the Internet Archive to keep records of one of the big named places every few weeks or whenever I remember, and it's clear they never really sell their stuff at those higher prices. Definitely ripe for a consumer law complaint - or probably more effective, waving a printout of their pricing history when haggling for a discount, which worked for me on our big purchase.

    • Damn, I want one of those now.

  • Picked one of these up from junk week trash. Pretty decent for free, but probably still reasonable value at $39. The RRP is a joke though.

  • Thanks OP. Looks good to me and I had a gift card I needed to use 👍
