    Why for adults?

I put that in there to get JV’s comment on the post! ;)

Because youth is wasted on the young.

    " 1200X"

    Bullshit.

The (1989] $600 100x objective on the one in a university biology lab would take you to 1000x with a 10X eyepiece, but that involved very fine tuning of the condenser, a careful collection of stains and filters and lowering the objective into an oil-drop on the surface of the slide to minimise the refractions.

Tell me again how the laws of physics have been modified to create this $85 scientific wonder.

For what it is useful for - up to ~ 100 x before you begin to lose any depth of field needed for mechanical work, it's probably be great, so it doesn't deserve a neg but that ludicrous claim is a shocker.

Digital zoom most likely. Not claiming to be optical.

    • In theory you may zoom in almost infinitely by means of larger screen (imagine it on 100 inch TV) and then there is digital zoom…. In the end, this magnification is achievable, but it is going to be a fake number. Not an optical magnification as expected from microscope.

    • Yeah that was my thought too. I wonder if that should be 1200%.

I’m still tempted to pick one of these up for soldering work.

      • I have this for soldering…. love it!

        https://www.amazon.com.au/Magnetic-Soldering-Magnifying-Flex…

Looks a bit much with all the arms, but they are all repositionable (the bases aren't fixed), and with 4 of them it can hold everything in place while you work.
The motherboard riser spike things are handy to wedge things against, so you can push up against them (good magnet strength).

With soldering you're constantly trying to hold the two pieces in place, and wield the solder and iron into position. 4 clips make it much easier!

  • It's technically a 'microscope'… in that it's a scope that magnifies vision somewhat, but it shouldn't be called that. The 1200x magnification is rubbish

Here's an actual microscope for beginners for $135.
    https://www.amazon.com.au/40X-2000X-Microscope-Students-Mono…

    • It looks the part, but I think that would be a terrible choice. The "condenser" probably isn't although the lighting options and design look good.

What it doesn't have is a fine focus control. Once you get above 150x the reduction in the depth of field means a child could become quite frustrated attempting to focus on any part of a specimen that wasn't in focus via serendipity…

Any claimed magnification above 1000x for an optical microscope assumes that the user sees in the UV-C range, so at least their eyes will be sterile, however keeping the nitrogen in the optical tube so the light isn't absorbed is the trickiest part.

You cannot view any structure smaller than 400nM using visible light as the structure is smaller than the wavelength of the light…

      • At the price point of $135, I haven't seen much better.

Clearly there are much better microscopes out there, but not at this price point.
