Not really a deal because it's the regular price, but it's back in stock and I ran out. This stuff is great, on par or better than the stuff at Asian grocers, and I don't have to go to the shops. Only thing is you have to buy at least 2kg, but that's a non-issue for me because I add it to everything.

Mix in some chilli oil and roasted garlic, and yep, I recon I could handle a kilo of these :p

    • +2

you need crushed peanut mate.. XD

    • +1

It's 2 kilos tho. Before mixing in anything else.

    • +3

Don't forget to sprinkle some mi goreng on top

    • +1

Thanks for this. The local Asian store stopped carrying the big 1kg bag. Had to buy the 100g for $3 last time!

    • @MasterScythe do you just eat it with chili oil and roasted garlic? Is that dry roasted?

  • +7

Not really a deal because it's the regular price

    Well not a deal then?

    • +1

Sure. Or you can drive to an Asian grocery where they might not even stock 1kg bags, or pay a lot more for smaller bags.

The deal is that the product is in stock, delivered to your door, and is good quality and in bulk.

Mods please feel free to delete this.

  • Is it fried in palm oil?

    • +7

Doesn't say it isn't, so safe to assume it's palm oil.

    Yumm

  • What’s the shelf life on a 1kg bag?

    • +4

If you go with the top few comments about one sitting ….

    • +1

The 2 bags I just received today are BB 20/08/2024

        Thank you @rosebank!

Feels like there needs to be a new PSA section on ozbargain, as technically this is not a deal, but compared to how most people probably buy them, in small overpriced packets from the supermarket, this is ABSOLUTELY a deal!

    • Yes, and over a year shelf life if you store them properly. My 2kg will prob last me 2-3 months max

    • +1

100% agree, it's not really a deal it's just bulk buying.
Like I've noticed it's pretty common for people to pay the equivalent of $30 to $40 a litre for small bottles of sesame oil when most Asian grocers stock this stuff which you can get for around $30 for 2 litres.

      • I haven't seen that can for ages. I've added it to my wishlist; will check prices in the shops next time I'm in Chinatown. My uncle from HK gave me a litre of what he described as the "best sesame oil ever" and still have a bit left

        • +1

Lost time I bought a can in Footscray it was under $20, I'm assuming like everything else it's gone up now

      • Use it in cooking to uplift your health quotient

        Doubtful…

        I'm sure it's tasty though

  • +2

Got some, thanks. To me it's a deal compared to how we normally buy.

What does "stored properly" entail here? Simply airtight?

    • +1

Yeah any airtight container. I've used glass jars, plastic containers, or even a rubber band for short periods

      • For short periods, I just tend to go with the flow…

  • +1

Damnit, just bought a 1 kilo bag last week. I went through it in a month or two last time from primarily overloading my Mi goreng with it. Might grab another 2 for inflation purposes.. 😅

Also, where else are you guys using this? Can I wack some in to add fragrance while steaming rice in a cooker for example? I think I've seen this, steamed in the rice in some Hainan chicken recipes I've had throughout Melbourne.

    • +1

Yea, I would like some ideas too, to justify a 2kg buy.

      • +1

You can put it on char kway teo or any fried noodles, hainan chicken rice, fried rice, noodle soups. I also buy peanuts in bulk and pan roast them with this and other shit

    • I use chicken stock, pandan leaves and ginger for the rice. But everyone has their own method. I used to pan roast the rice and ginger before cooking but cbf anymore.

I sprinkle this on top for the contrast in texture.

Edit: how much did you pay for 1kg?

      • +1

So I used to pay about $5.50 or $6 locally in Casey for 500g which was pretty good. Now they only have 250g plastic tubs and 1kg bags.

I think the 1kg bag cost me $10.50 or $11? Still apparently Malaysian product but different brand, Doree.

Now I'm on the hunt for bulk anchovies so I can do ikan bilis since you've recommended to toast off some peanuts too. Got me in the mood to prep all sort of condiments.. 🤣

        • +1

I couldn't find bulk anchovies when I made nasi lemak from scratch. I had like an excess 1L of sambal. I put that shit on everything for 2 weeks

  • +1

I love these, but find they're the gassiest food ever. Farts for days! Any suggestions on how to avoid that?

    • Why would you want to avoid that?

  • We're sorry. The quantity you´ve requested is no longer available. We've updated the quantity to reflect the maximum available.

There's just one left in stock and won't let me order from a few hours ago…

    • People keep reporting it as sold out, but then I check and it's in stock dispatched 2-4 weeks

      • +1

Yep, all the way to you 'proceed to checkout'.

That's when the error message hits.

        • That explains it. thanks
