Surface Pro 8 owners beware, it has issues with gen4 SSDs

    • +2

yes, this ssd in particular does not work well with Surface pro 8.

    • +2

Surface Pro 7+ owners should be cautious with this drive too. I posted a PSA about known issues with the drive here.

Works well with the ASUS ROG Ally or the Valve Steam Deck

  • Can this be used in a ps5? Just curious

    • Speedwise it's fine, you just have to move the connector to 2230 size if it has one

    • I mean it would fit, dunno if it's quite fast enough.

    • Try and find something faster. This is more suitable for portable devices like laptops, Steam Deck and ROG Ally. The PS5 can support larger and faster drives.

    • This is physically a much smaller drive so it’s more expensive than it’s larger counter parts. I’d look elsewhere for ps5

Big problems with the SN740? Now you see why a gen 4 2230 SSD is being sold cheap. Through some obscure Chinese seller that no-one will bother trying get replacements under warranty from. Even the sellers advert warns its random chance whether it works in an SP8.

  • For the steam deck, isn't the Samsung drive better due to lower power consumption?

    • Interested to know about this, too.

    • Which Samsung drive are you taking about specifically? You'd expect a faster drive to use more power, so a gen 4 drive is going to use more power than a gen 3 drive, that's why gen 4 drives need coolers, and gen 5 drivers need coolers with fans. Or are you talking about the equivalent gen 4 Samsung SSD?

The label refers to peak draw, and as the WD it's referring to pcie 4.0 connections so it's about the same when connected at pcie 3.0

  • I’ve ordered a 1TB Corsair from Amazon for $168 for Steam Deck, is it worth cancelling for the 2TB here?
I’m just worried about the AliExpress part as well as the life factor of this one..

    • Pulled the trigger, oh well. If it lasts the 5 years and has decent speeds I’ll be satisfied.

If not this, any link for 2tb ssd for SP9?

Oomph that is cheap, good one OP. Bought the 1tb last year from another seller on Aliexpress for pretty much the same as the 2tb here, to use in a Steam Deck. Few notes if you're interested:
    - Mine was genuine WD as checked on their website, however it did show as out of warranty. I've opened a support ticket with WD to update the warranty details, it never got resolved in spite of a few requests for updates. To be fair this is exactly what I expected as they're likely OEM parts with limited WD warranty. Again, purchased from a different seller, but I'd expect they all offer the same experience
    - A quick speed test in a ubs-c enclosure was in line with expectations
    - Easy enough to clone your existing Steam Deck SSD with e.g. gparted if you don't feel like doing a fresh Steam OS install
    - Doesn't seem to make a difference to power usage/battery life compared to stock SSD, at least not a noticeable one
    - Note the Steam Deck is PCIe gen 3, so you could get away with a lower SKU like the SN530 if you could find it cheaper… good luck though, this is a killer price! :)

    • I haven't checked today, but weirdly enough a few days ago when I looked for the sn530/540 they were more expensive than the 740

Davy Chu on YouTube shows you how to clone the SSD using your steam deck and how to install it after.
      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zQcf1H5w0zw

    • So I’ve installed my 2TB SN740, and tested working.
However I’m wondering if my SSD is thicker than normal, and that’s why I can’t close my lid (facing the back, in the bottom left).

  • I'd be cautious of buying anything "expensive" on AliExpress these days. Their customer service just got a turn for the worse

    • argh, they've always been terrible.

my gods i had an issue, had to return, spent hours on cust svc because they are oh so dumb and keepasking the same Q and sending the same form answers.

they promise the world, but leave you in the lurch.

  • This seems faster than the samsung one, why does it have less votes?

    • -1

Because AliExpress is terrible to deal with when you have an issue now

      • +1

The other listing he's referring to is on aliexpress from the exact same seller

    • This one isn't got for surface pro 8 as its gen 4, which SP8 and sometimes SP7+ have issues with.
So it may be faster, but it has less of a target audience.

This one is great for ROG Ally and steam deck though.

Also, the other deal was posted by clear, who has a good reputation, so I assume people have alerts on his deal postings

  • Damn! I just paid $209 for 2tb last week! Hasn't even arrived yet.

  • Good to see 2230 SSDs coming down in price.

  • +1

This looks like an interesting 2230 enclosure if you need a fast small external drive. It's on Kickstarter though, by a company that has already released other products successfully.

  • I'm getting this for the surface laptop 3. I've found instructions on how to physically change the drive over but once that is done how do I get the operating system on the new disc?
Obviously I can backup the meagre things I have on the computer (129gb) now but I'm not sure how to install windows again in a believe the surface has a slightly different version than a normal desktop?

    • google clonezilla

  • Judging by the part number in the photos, these are the non-SED (self-encrypting drive) variants of the SN740.

Not that it really matters for the vast majority of people, as they'll just be throwing these into portable consoles and Surface portables, without any encryption at play.

On the other hand, the only firmware images I see floating around are for the other variant. (Including the ones on LVFS posted by Dell and Lenovo)

    • what part number means encrypt or non encrypt ssd?

  • Seems deal has ended or prices have gone up on this now :(

  • Mine has shipped but noticed something interesting. When I bought the store is called "JBL Global Sales Store", but now it seems to be called "Global-HK Sales Store".

    • Name changes happen often on aliexpress.
If you doubt their legitimacy, they've sold 2000+ of items on this listing alone https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005005539645580.html

      • Ah, yeah the listing appears still the same and everything, I was just curious.
