FYI: Potential stability issues when upgrading Surface Pro 7+ with the Western Digital WD SN740 SSD

Given the popularity of the WD SN740 drive on ozbargain, I wanted to flag issues some surface book owners have been facing with the drive.

I installed a 1tb WD SN740 into my Surface 7 Pro + (8gb) two months ago, but experienced frequent crashes and reboots despite having done a clean install of W11 and updating everything.

As the event log and diagnostic tests didn't point to anything obvious, I decided to start again and install Windows 10. But, the crashes continued.

Figuring it probably has something to do with the new drive (duh) I googled the issue, and found others are facing similar problems:

Everything on my surface book has been updated (including the drive's firmware), so I think the issue is yet to be addressed. But (so far) turning off 'link state power management' on the drive appears to have fixed the problem:

FYI, I've seen people with SP8 also report this as a problem too. My model is the same as the one from this deal here.

    Surface Book or Surface Pro?

    • Surface Pro 7 +.

(+ Thanks. I've edited the post to make this clearer).

  • Thanks for sharing this - do you know if there are known reliable SSDs for the 7+?

    • I'm still using my WD SN740 drive ATM. Since applying the fix above I haven't suffered the same stability issues, but who knows if a windows update will reverse this.

It think there are suggested drives in one of the reddit threads I linked. From memory the consensus was to go with the same drive Microsoft uses.

Just upgraded my SP X SQ2 with a WD SN740. No crashes or freezes. Sleep / wake works fine. No registry hacks required.
