Keep in mind these surface laptops score quite low in repairability (5/10): https://www.ifixit.com/Device/Microsoft_Surface_Laptop_3

I also suspect there will be a swelling battery some time in your future (after seeing the average slightly older models on ebay).

At least it isnt a Surface Book, those are irrepairable. Still see people trying to flog those for $800+, theyve caught the crApple delusion bug where they think things are still worth a premium 8 years on…

As someone with 30+ years in IT, top tip: Its safer just to avoid the entire subject of Microsoft laptops

The price you pay for thin and light

Are these better than surface pro?

    • +2

Surface pro is nice to use, but easy to break the screen due to soft cover, and equally difficult/expensive to repair.
RAM is soldered in all of them, so you'd better be sure that 8GB is enough for the lifetime.

      • RAM is soldered in all of them, so you'd better be sure that 8GB is enough for the lifetime.

You make it sound like that's unique to Surface devices. The RAM in virtually every ultraportable laptop and tablet has had soldered-in RAM for over a decade.

        • You make it sound like that's unique to Surface devices.

What did bargaino say that made it sound like it's unique to surface devices?

Read the second sentence in context, especially after the first sentence.

RAM is soldered in every tablet and virtually every ultraportable, not just the Surface devices. It's a moot point.

            • @eug: The context was the question being answered.

"Are these better than surface pro?"

The surface pro became the context.

"RAM is soldered in all of them" replying with regard to the device being asked about.

Every other device was NOT being inquired about, therefore there was no need or no point discussing other devices.

A question was asked and answered and you wanted to find a problem with it.

That's all that is going on here.

:edit: Looking at your post history i can see you've done this kind of thing before and dragged it out, so I'm letting you know I'm done right here.
              Good day :)

The poster was stating a negative point about the Surface Pro.
The negative point applies to every other device like the Surface Pro, so the point is moot.

You do realise you're doing exactly what you think I do, right?

edit: after spending the whole day away from the computer then coming back and re-reading OP's comment, I now see what he (and you) meant. My mistake was that I was reading it from the perspective of someone who's aware that every device in the category has that limitation so there's no use specifically pointing it out as a negative, after pointing out two other negatives that are more valid (screen easy to break, difficult/expensive to repair).

But with a fresh perspective I see that OP was simply pointing out the RAM limitation, separate to the two previous negatives which I also agree with. Apologies to @Raj09 and @bargaino and you.

  • As someone who has used one for a while these devices…feel really nice. The screen is awesome (3:2 is great for coding, lots of vertical space) and the keyboard imo is the best in class.

The issue with me was the battery life and yeah 8gb of ram can become an issue. It can be worked around but the fact that you can't upgrade it without some microsoldering is annoying. If it's enough for you then go for it.
