Acer Swift Go 14inch Snapdragon X Plus 8 Core /16GB/512GB $968 + Delivery ($0 C&C/ in-Store) @ Harvey Norman

101

Great price. I've the Intel ultra 5 125h version, and it's nice. The glossy screen may have a warped reflection that makes your head look long, but this is normal for these Acer Swift Go 14s.

  • You might want to to include the price and where it’s being sold in the title

    • Lost me at Acer

        • Thank you for the advice. I choose to leave it and instead buy a laptop from a reputable brand that uses quality components and won't start falling after a year.

It has been this price for some time. The Swift AI with X Elite is $1298 @ BingLee. (I think the AI model is higher with better built quality)

Estimated Battery Life (hr)… Up to 28

    Really?

  • -2

Wow makes the better version which was $998 cheap!

      And is it really better…

      • I htink so

These Windows ARM laptops have failed spectacularly. Avoid!

    • +1

Exactly! Which is why NVIDIA will also join the party and develop SOC for Windows…

      • It's still a rumour and nothing was mentioned at CES. The rumour is that Nvidia is working with MediaTek on a desktop chip, but nothing is confirmed.

The biggest issue with Snapdragon has been emulation and the dumpster fire of their software development kit to gain any traction against AMD and Intel in the Windows space, despite all the Microsoft marketing dollars thrown Qualcomm's way.

How so, got any references? I just had a read through this article and the guy argues with some good evidence that the ARM architecture is superior, in terms of power consumption balanced with speed. Maybe he’s comparing to an older Intel CPU?

      https://medium.com/@derailed.dash/should-you-switch-to-a-win…

I’m an old school Linux nerd and only use Windows when I must for work. And wouldn’t ever buy another Surface (had so much trouble getting Linux going in our old Pro 2). Especially any AI / Copilot rubbish. So I’m sceptical as well. But that article (I haven’t had time to look much else) makes the Snapdragon processors sound fairly competitive.

      • Not x86 so poor compatibility. Windows' one drawcard is legacy software so if you remove that then you might as well jump ship to Linux.

        • Linux support for these new snapdragon arm chips atm is basically non-existent, so you'd be running wsl anyways. Better off going with lunar lake.

        • Have you used a Snapdragon laptop? What apps didn't work for you?

If you don't use any exotic apps, Snapdragon laptops are an excellent choice.

    • This is Microsoft's second try at Windows on ARM. They just abandoned it for the poor suckers who bought Windows 8 ARM.

The current Windows ARM chips aren't that fast but were released at premium pricing.

Maybe this time it is different, especially with MS addicted to copying Apple, but personally, I'd wait two years.

      • you mean dont buy snapdragon laptops until another 2 years?
ok. noted. i like the battery life and price but i will follow your suggestion

    • I switched from Windows to Mac for the M1 Macbook Air soon after launch and it's amazing how smooth the switch was for Apple, because you're correct, Windows has sputtered and kinda fallen over on ARM… again…

ARM is a fantastic architecture when the software is designed for it, or you have an excellent translation layer like Rosetta 2 proved to be.

Anyway, I hope Windows can eventually make ARM work for them.

  • Is the gpu better thn gtx 1050ti??

    • +1

Unfortunately Snapdragon X GPUs are very average in addition to software compatability

  • How is the heat and fan noise when using on lap?

    • 2bh I don't understand the fan noise issue people seem to have, saying that it's too loud.

Then again I don't game or anything that intensive. It's been very acceptable to me, like nothing of concern. I've the Intel version.

      • You have a different version and don't use it in a way the fans would actually kick up… it's not an AMA here you don't have to answer every question.

        • +1

I've said I have the Intel version.

Do you have anything to add?

          • @smartProverble: I know you said you have the Intel version multiple times now lmao that's exactly my point. You don't have this.

    • +1

I have the amd version of this laptop. The fan/heating issue is really annoying. Besides that it’s a really nice laptop.

  • Which one is better? Ultra 5 125H or this Snapdragon?

    • neither the 8845hs version, or the upcoming ryzen ai 9 365 version. what a mouthful that is

    • for now ,go intel as Arm version does not have good compatibility for apps.

      • I think you mean… go for the AMD version. Intel mobile chips are not good. They haven't been for awhile now.

  • Ia this really bad? When talking incompatibility issues with arm, how bad is it? Surely ms office works?

    • You'll find that a lot of the people who complain about compatibility problems have never used a Snapdragon laptop themselves and are just spreading FUD.

MS Office works great, so does Chrome and Edge. So far all my non-exotic apps have worked fine. I kept my old Intel laptop just in case I have compatibility problems with my Surface Laptop 7 but haven't had to use it in the past six months since I switched.

The long battery life and near-instant wake and not having to worry about the laptop turning itself on in my bag has been a breath of fresh air.

Coincidentally this article was published yesterday.
