  • Actualyl looking at this or steam deck. Spes aside, do you have to buy a 5g plan to use these? I plan to use on train.

    • +6

      Play offline?

You can't put SIM cards in these, if you were wondering.

    • +7

I'm sure you can hotspot to your phone.

    • +1

I took the plunge. My brother has a steamdeck and I was really interested in the form factor. I don't have as much time to sit down and play my PC or PS5, so this form factor was up my alley for the train rides into work. I also didn't want to put down $1k so this was a good middle ground for my use case.

And seeing all the emulation that this thing can do was really interesting to me.

    • +1

The steam deck gives the best 1% lows on a low power profile, and generally matches or beats the other handhelds on unrestricted battery (though they get higher average, the 1% is more important for smooth gameplay). The touch pads on the steam deck are good for expanding the feasibility of less controller friendly games both in ultra fine mouse control but also them functioning as little macro pads with on screen displays showing you what button you are hovering over before you press. there are a lot of games i wouldn't play if it werent for those touch pads. steamdeck is also easier to add a bigger SSD to.

steamos is also pretty great for getting out of the way and just letting you play.

    • Neither, wait for Legion Go S, it will have SteamOS and better performance (and probably better battery life) than the Steam Deck.
You will miss the dual trackpads if you want to play games made for mouse and keyboard, but the touchscreen and small trackpad in the right is (IMO) more than enough for basic navigation.
It also has trigger stoppers like other "pro" controllers, so you can set the triggers to actuate faster if you need.

  • +5

Was keen on a cheap MSI Claw U7 but after seeing the Legion GO next handhelds with the newer chip makes me rethink it all. Yes it will be $1k plus but it will be great even that stream OS one

    • -1

Depends on what you’re looking for really. This is a cheap way to get a decently powerful mini PC with a screen and controller attached. Also a cheap way to steam link or play brainrot gacha games on a bigger screen.

      • Using this for Steam Link seems like kind of a waste imo

        • +5

That’s what I use it for. Much bigger screen than your phone while still being useful as a mini PC and capable of local play on lighter games.

Alternative cheaper stuff available? Sure. On one package? Not really.

    • From what I've seen, the Z2 GO is slightly slower then previous gen Z1 Extreme, but faster than what's in the Steam Deck. An ASUS ROG Ally with a Z1 Extreme could be an option if you're tech savvy and willing to install Bazzite, or hopefully SteamOS if they release an image for it.

      • The Legion Go 2 uses a different chip?

        • +1

You mentioned "that steam OS one", which uses the Z2 GO.

          • @tonyamazing: Sorry I meant does the Legion Go 2 which is the big boy OLED model use a Z2 Extreme?

            • +1

@Twisty: The text I've read says "up to Z2 Extreme", so I assume that there will be lower tier options available with Z2 GO, and higher tier with Z2 Extreme.

    • Price different cannot be ignored really. This deal is $699 with all the accessories. Even if you get a LEGO S for $1100 on some sale months later, cheap dock/case/protector/charger etc. all add up and would be another $100 easy. $500 saved from this deal is enough to buy so many games as well as an upgrade to a 2TB NVMe and a decent power bank. I prefer the flexibility of Windows 11 also. It can give you the handheld fix that you need now, and then can sell and buy a discounted LEGO 2 for like a grand in a year's time.

  • +1

    Comes with bonus stuttering too

  • +6

After watching all the next gen handheld, they are way better, love the Legion Go S, just HODL till they all arrived, these will drop further for sure!

    • Yes the S is nice wonder how much but the Legion Go 2 with OLED seems fantastic but it will be $1600 at least

      • i think his attitude is that newer units will push down prices of these

like to me i wouldnt spend $1k on any of these units and certainly would not spend $1,6k!

but for $500-$600… sure i'll take a punt even though its Intel Arc.

        • Under $500 for the U7 to play my free Epic games I get and GOG if it’s capable of doing this then Yes for sure

  • +4

From all the updated reviewes posted, the new drivers seem to have fixed so much of the early issues. Intel seems to have a good driver support program.

    • improved for sure but after checking a few reviews none compared the claw to the steamdeck and when i did the comparison myself the steam deck is significantly smoother. i think it's a case of shill tubers not wanting to get blacklisted from review units.

  • +3

bought this from centrecom deal, its very good, ergonomics are good, etc. its benefitted from all the flack cause its so cheap and just as good as ally/legion

  • +3

maybe if they gave a further $350 off instead of the "$350 in accessories" then i'd get one just to mess around with just for the heck of it… (even then i'd think twice..lol)

    • +7

They prob just another sh|t load of these accessories sitting there can't sell, they need to do $499 with free packs then will get rid of them

      • +1

yeh definitely, if they can't sell the device no chance they can sell the accessories, i wasn't being serious with the $350 off because it's obvious its overly inflated figure to get those accessories.. lol

    • +4

I paid <$170 shipped for these accessories.
      So inflated value.

  • +6

Can we appreciate the fact that they dont clarify whats actually in this 'pack'.

Even if its the official dock thats only 127$@ow and a frigging cable matters 5m active usb4 cable only cost 166$.

lol good luck selling a worst in class last gen rig for 700. needs to be like 500$ for it to be a deal with how its being sub 600 before and that new machines are due soon

  • -1

    Not a deal because:

U7 throttles to be as slow as the u5.
100w USB charger is silly and cheaper ones can be purchased
Cheaper dock can be purchased and this dock doesn't really offer any benefits

    Costco deal was better

    • +1

i think this SKU is kind of shit

      you'd rather want the U5 w/ 1tb ssd?

      and under $600?

its not a bad as people say but i think this suits people who think this is a 2ndary gaming device and want something portable than runs win11…

      • I've got a toddler so my life is fairly non-stop. But playing old games like need for speed the run is cool on it. I also open the menu and hibernate the device and then come back to where I left off later.

Windows 11 really holds the device back which is a shame.

    • When both CPU and GPU is maxed out, then yeah, even the max 45W TDP (in AC) can be not enough. You can raise it further but it does get very hot so need good air cooling behind it. I found that just disabling turbo mode in Windows makes it much better with my U7 Claw's GPU hardly ever throttling. Easy 1 click solution. And U7 is still better when needing to do video encoding, compression etc.

I agree that the Costco deal for the U5 was the best.

  • +1

The accessories are worth $100 at a stretch, don't fall for it. The new gen is right around the corner and prices will fall even lower. It's a not-so-great 1st gen product.

    • +2

But I am still this deal is posted here, it will still sold out within a few days !!! Some ppl won't listen and just don't care

  • Hey guys, a somewhat generic question, these handheld gaming devices that run windows, are you restricted to what software you can install?
    Here is my use case:
I volunteer within the emergency services and can be on call for work, so im wanting a small device i can throw in a backpack that i can use to rdp into client networks. The catch is my work uses appgate for VPN, and they dont allow the connection from Android devices (so a small android tablet is out of the question).

So if i can install pretty much anything on these devices, i can possibly 2 for one and get a handheld gaming device and be able to use it for work if i ever needed.

    • +3

I don't see why not, it's basically a windows 11 tablet PC with joysticks

      • Yeah, thats what i thought, just wasnt sure if the device came with some sort of lockdown or restriction on it. Like i also assume i could install battle.net, steam, GOG etc and dont have to use the interface that MSI loads (for this device) etc.

I cant say ive looked into these devices much, but now thinking it might be good to start doing some research and put some feelers out around sale prices and what devices are better than other, etc.

        • There's no restrictions, anything you could install on your laptop you can install on this.

        • just beware the battery life, as WIN and intel x86 chip is notorious with low energy efficiency when comparing with ARM chips, the limitation of arm chip on low gaming performance still exists. unless you want to buy this and use it for a year or two, may consider to wait.

are you also familiar with small format handheld laptop? something like GPD WIN? this may suits you better as it will be a nightmare using the WIN 11 for work with those gaming hand held.

          • @SeiraS: I wasn't specifically implying the purchase of this exact deal. the reason i asked on this is because its below $1000, which is sort of my price point. I'm not looking for an everyday work replacement, only something that could be used if necessary, more than anything.

So having people confirm no restrictions puts me in position of now having to look at what's around. I'm going to guess that with one of these if it has Bluetooth i could easily BT a little keyboard to get around the joystick stuff as well.

            • @natcoso9955: the steamdeck has dual touchpads to give you fine mouse control and also can double as a keyboard. steam have released windows drivers for windows 11 but i haven't tested them myself. steamos is a stripped version of arch, you can easily add stuff back in. highly recommend the steamdeck for none gaming uses over the others though purely for the dual touchpads. the form factor is way better for work on the move than a laptop for my use cases, i can legitimated one hand some tasks, i can't do that with a laptop. it does have bluetooth but i'm pretty sure all the handhelds do.

            • @natcoso9955: Just think of this MSI Claw as a controller attached, small screen Windows 11 laptop because that's exactly what it is. And for this price, it's an absolute bargain for what you get TBH. Laptops with this same CPU/RAM/NVMe/Battery spec goes for $1400+. It comes with TB4 port so I just plug in a dock/hub and get multi HDMI ports, Ethernet, USB ports etc. It has Bluetooth, WiFi 7, a MicroSD card slot for extra portable storage. Plays most games much better than expected as well. Only think you can't do is expand its RAM so you are stuck with 16GB.

Bought this at JW Computers today and they price matched Scorptec with accessory kit, dock (looks like a jsaux hd0801 rebadge?) & 100w pd charger for $699 no surcharge
Flying off on Sunday so TRS $63.55 (rounded up) refund with a final cost of $635.45

I know the claw is a flop and u5 is better than the u7 (stock no bios changed u7), LB and RB buttons suck cus of the way they mounted the micro switch, d pad location is awkward compared to the ally, total poo to remove the heatsink and fans to swap the 2230, rubbish min 20w tdp (need s/w to lower more with secret bios changes), no custom fan curve for custom tdp, but there’s lossless scaling and thunderbolt 4 for egpu
    Lol

My rog ally from Black Friday deals after the Amazon 10% and also TRS will be about $780 ish
Done the 74Wh upgrade, jsaux clear case and 4tb 2280 with adapter

The Claw will most likely be a semi permanent extra desktop. I’m sure with the little extra cpu power over the u5 and an egpu it will be a pretty good gaming device as right now the cpu cores just hogs too much and starves the igpu

    • +1

Was a flop on day 1 but it's really good now and you can easily force fix to a lower or higher TDP than factory default limites using throttlestop app. But with the latest BIOS updates, it parks the cores really well so even at 20W TDP mode, SoC goes down to 6W during idle and runs at 8-12W for light gaming, emulation, youtube etc.

      • +1

I just had to buy it for myself to see how much of a flop it really is to this day and also something to tinker around with ;)
I'm actually surprised by how nice the triggers feel esp when u need to hold them in for say car games. Very little resistance so less force on your finger compared to the rog ally.

The speakers tho… very very nice sound and the rog ally already has great sound. Had issues with the wifi sometimes just disconnecting to my mesh or 1/2 bars while I'm 1m away but some driver updates and its going good.

Bit annoying you cant remap desktop buttons/joystick. Left stick is mouse on the claw. A is left mouse click, B is right mouse click. Ally has right stick as mouse with RB left mouse click and RT right mouse click
Claw key is MSI Center M
Quick settings key is Launch quick settings
On the ally the corresponding keys does the opposite function so the "claw key" is launch quick settings and "quick settings key" is the asus armory crate

        Gets confusing
        lol

        • +1

Same lol. I bought it few weeks back just because of how cheap it was and it exceeded all my expectations and some. For the price, there's no competition really. Yeah, it would be great to be able to map every button but I got used to it haha.

          • +1

@ozjaki: Some brave soul needs to upgrade the battery and with a new back plate to give it a bit more girth for a larger battery
80Wh seems like a very good healthy battery size right??
            hehe

            • @nikon: 80Whr would be great, but would make it about 100g heavier I would think. If there was an easy option to do it ,would be cool though.

I just bought a 90Whr 200W powerbank and that's good enough for my needs atm. :)

              • +1

@ozjaki: About 1 week ago I received my Movespeed z70pro 70,000mAh 259Wh powerbank, obviously not flight approved but postage allowed from china with extra discrete item description
                lol

                It's a whopping 1.6kg

                Comparison of my handheld weights
Ayn Odin 2 426gm (screen protector, microsd)
Switch OLED 520gm (LinYuvo KS47, modded, microsd, screen protector)
                Claw 692gm (screen protector)
Rog Ally 754gm (80Wh, screen protector, 2280 adapter+2280 m.2, 2280 copper heatsink + 5 silicone rubber bands, jsaux clear back not using the RGB back plate)

Official Rog Ally weight is 608gm so compared to mine with all the mods is about 146gm heavier

Crooked analogue stick layout, no buy!
And don't tell me to alternate my natural thumbs!!

  • +2

@deebee8 it no longer lists accessories as a bonus when buying the claw

  • I wanted to share my buying experience with Scorptec. I purchased this bundle from them on 20/01/25 @9:20am. I chose to have it delievered as i would not have been able to pick it up from the other side of toen from their Dandenong warehouse. After a few days of no update of dispatch, I contacted them on the next day to see what was going on. A consultant advised that they were busy because of the back-to-school sales they had and that the order would be shipped either mid-week (23/01/25) or end of week (25/01/25). They did say that they put a pirority with my order with the warehouse to hoepfully speed it up. I was happy with this outcome hoping that I would have my items before the end of the week (25/01/25). On 24/01/25 when i did not have any updates i contacted them again via their order page. i asked if there were any updates or and indication when my order would be shipped. I waited until that weekend to see if it would be shipped and again it had not. I made contact again via their orders portal to ask if my order could be followed up as it was still showing as not packed. On 27/01/25 after i had not recieved any updated i tried to lodge a complaint with Scoptec. I did not recieve any contact or follow up to my order or complaint. I did however receive an automated notifiaction on the evening of 28/01/25 that my order was now packed and awaiting for dispatch to collect. I then recieved an automated notification on 29/01/2025 that my order had been shipped. I finally was able to receive my order on 30/01/25. I still have not had any contact from Scorptec about my complaint. Their customer service was pretty bad… I mean this is the level of customer service you get from random ebay sellers. Just be aware that if you are ordering from Scorptec, you may have to wait a while for your order to be shipped.
