This is the original Pi Zero W. Single core, BCM 2835 SoC (ARM11 at 1GHz)

Not the Pi Zero 2 W.

    • Yep, pi zero original hasn't had the same stock problems as the much more capable 2 as far as I know, not sure why core is parading this (also got the email)

      • +3

        I don't think I've seen local stock for the Pi Zero 2 W in a few months/years…

  • +7

    Good enough for Pihole :)
Got this at $17.96 from Core back in 2017.

    • I had a zero first gen with only pihole running, but it burned itself from lack of cooling during a hot summer day. it did not have direct sunlight either!

      • Have mine inside case from this deal and have no issues yet (it was naked before).

        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/712912

        • So sad I missed this deal, kicking myself for it. Hope it comes down again!

        • I have mine running pihole in exactly the same passive case. Never had an issue with heat.

      • I have been running pi-hole on a old Pi 3 and I have been having a lot of issues with overheating causing system hangs etc.
So I guess I better not get one of these Pi Zero Ws to replace it …

    • +5

DNS server reliant on a wifi connection… I could only every bring myself to do that as the secondary.

No heat issues on any of mine though, they don't even get anywhere near 50C (they're in 3D printed cases with low temperature tolerance).

  • +3

Just got the email too! I will leave them for people who really need them 😅

  • According to Pi CEO stock problems will be mostly fixed in q3.

    • If they stopped reserving all their stock for businesses the stock problems could have been sorted much sooner.

      • +1

Yeah they totally stitched up hobbyists. I can see why, but it was/is painful for us. They've ramped up production to start hitting big time in Q3.

    • depends if shortage is due to broadcom who make the soc or line to assemble …..for the pi 3b they also had chinese production lines , same quality as euro but cheaper and better supply , they used to sell them on ali ……

      • I'm just basing this off comments made by Eben Upton their production was significant in q2 and will be even more in q3.

  • +12

    they got a couple left

Edit: imagine being so bitter, that you vote down a classic Simpsons joke.

Imagine being so lame that you whinge about downvoting for a comment that ended up being upvoted.

    Overpriced and underpowered

    • Seriously? For the price of a KFC burger meal?

      • +5

It’s not 2017 anymore. This doesn’t impress me even at the price of a KFC burger.

      • +5

what can this actually do though?
I know what I'm getting from KFC

        • I tried using one to run a Dakboard and yeah nah, not up to it.

        • +6

Works fine for PiHole and education purposes.

          • @Presence: pihole looks cool. been reading up on it now.
educational purposes - thats me too

i was tossing up between this one and pi 4b for the significant spec upgrade but for pihole Im guessing its better to get the zero because always on lower power consumption - am i correct?

            • +2

@ChatCPT: All Pi models have very low power consumption. The difference between them is small enough that it won’t matter at all (eg. A couple of watts).

The Pi 3/4b sre a bit better for pihole because you can use a wired Ethernet connection instead of wifi. That can be helpful for DNS but depending on what you’re doing and whether you even have a wired connection, the zero will do just fine. Any of them have enough performance for pihole.

              • @thegieche: thank you for this!
I have 2 wired PCs and plenty of 10+ Wifi devices (3 mobiles, 4 wifi cams, wifi plugs etc)
I have had issues with the wifi on my cheapie optus router and I guess the ethernet pi adds functionality and future proofing for other projects
I'll have a lookout for sales on the Pi 3 or 4b

      • +5

Seriously, this used to be $14.96, but was also updated years ago by the Zero 2 W. This old model should be discounted as On Clearance, not price jacked.

      • +11

To be fair the KFC meal probably has more compute power.

        • +1

Has more com-poop power for sure.

        • Nice, I like it.. Burger is to CPU what Potato is to Camera.

          • +2

            @Bluto Mindpretzel:

            Burger is to CPU

I believe the processing power in the KFC meal comes from the chips.

      • 2 burger meals if you use receipts for free drink and aren’t worried about chips ….

    • Exactly, and why this is downvoted?

    • +3

You can pick up an ESP32 for less than 60 cents with free shipping from Aliexpress.
      https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005005246146177.html

It will run Esper, a Pi-Hole equivalent.
      https://github.com/openesper/esper

      • Interesting! But $6, not 0.60 for me

        • +1

Lol. Or literally said 0.59c, and it has now jumped up to $6.

          • @guidedlight: You haven't figured out Asia have you… lol

They're tracking your browser and purposely price jacking. Happens all the time, even with flights when booking on their company websites.

Just do a search and figure out how to get around it. Sometimes clearing cookies and data isn't enough, you need a new IP, or use another device (with a different IP) and order etc.

          • @guidedlight: Welcome deal for new users. Check it again in an incognito tab and you'll see 59c again.

      • people go for the pi for the community projects and docos , etc ….. and they have you locked in as broadcom add some extra for mr upton instead of standard broadcom soc …if i i was making 1000 of something i’d go for a generic board but for hobbyist pi community seems worth the extra money …..

    • Perfectly adequate for what most people are using their full sized Pi 4s for though, pihole/home assistant/vpn etc.

  • I bought one and a clear case for a backup incase I need for anything.

    • +1

What emergency use case are you thinking of where you’d require one of these be on hand and you couldn’t wait a few days for it to arrive?

      • Isn't it usually out of stock for a long time? Every time I wanted one was out of stock and sometimes awaiting stock but order got cancelled. Pihole and pivpn is what I wanted for (pihole done though a Nas docker so just vpn left). Not emergency just projects I never got around to as when I was in mood to do as no stock available. so 20 bucks to have one on hand when you need it is not bad.

        • +2

I don’t think this older model has had any major stock shortages. Don’t believe the marketing FOMO.

        • +1

Most people don't want these anymore, no stock issue. Pi Zero 2W, maybe.

Mine has been collecting dust for a year now.

        • +1

PiVPN on this, really? What kind of speed do you get, curious? Coz I would have never thought of these for VPN. I am using pi3b+ for VPN which is located overseas to route my IPTVs, performance is ok, but not that great.

          • @ggbhai: Its more to access my local network admin devices while away mainly overseas. Its hard to remember and setup a web server, port forward etc. for each device, so for admin stuff not streaming big amounts of data, so I think Pi Zero should be ok.

            • @nwa: Have you looked at Tailscale? Might be able to do what you're after for free

              • @roseyhead: Thanks I can have a look into it and try in docker. The issues I came across before was I couldn't have more than 1 macvlan as it was taken up by Pihole.

              • @roseyhead: Tailscale should 100% accomplish this.

I use it as a direct connection between my NAS and my PC, and I sync hundreds of gigabytes to it over the connection.

          • @ggbhai: I'm using my RPi1 for my pihole and piVPN without an issue. Speeds, not sure, but for viewing a couple of systems I have running through a web browser, it's more than adequate.

            • @maggoty: RPi1 Pi-hole handling DNS for my household, looking at the 24 hour graph usually sits at around 300 to 400 queries per 10 mins. I like to have it cabled though, don't think I'd want a wireless DNS server.

I've had a Pi Zero W sitting here for 5 years that I haven't used. I think it might end up as a wireless USB connection when I get around to setting up my VR race rim so I can set up the sim in another room and not have to run a USB cable back to my PC for the steering wheel controller.

      • He's running home cloud server farm with 10 Pi Zeros. If one of them is broken or there is an increase in load / traffic, he needs to add or replace some.

      • its nice to have one spare for any sudden failures or when you want to spin up a project in a night. I went from not having a pi-hole to having one in an hour or so just cos i had a pi zero in the drawer doing nothing (admittedly purchased for a different project that never eventuated)

        • Same here, I installed pihole on an old Pi 2B I'd had floating about for years. Fast forward a month and I bought one of those Dell deals that get posted to run my pihole and a bunch of other stuff. (fast forward another month and I set my Pi back up to run my secondary DNS)
          It's a slippery slope, that's for sure

          • +1

@roseyhead: I have 3 rpis floating around now (pi hole and 2 volumios, one for lounge room speakers, one for headphones) and yeah. Rpi all the things.

            Home assistant is next

  • +1

I'd say they make great reddit bot hosts, but with the upcoming changes to the API tiers….

I thought I was pretty techie but I have no idea what any of that means :(

  • +1

Correct me if I'm wrong, wasn't Voultar (Talented console modder on you tube) using this or something similar to unbrick WiiU's?

Found it. It was a Raspberry Pi Pico.
    And here is the video:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=14n5r1rRB9s

  • is this the 1.1 version?

  • spent about a year trying to find one for rrp, now I feel pressured to buy another one whenever I see it 😂

  • +1

Bought like 3 of these back when you could find em for 5 bucks each. Things turn out funny hey?

    • +1

Wifi or the standalone version? Only the standalone was that cheap.

      • Wifi because I used them as network cameras, on deals of course.

  • Been looking for a cheap Wi-Fi bridge, this’ll probably do the trick.

  • +2

They were in stock a month ago. They have not had the Pi Zero 2 W in over a year.

I've given up and gone with the Orange Pi Zero2 which you can get for about $AUD38. https://i.imgur.com/xAeKlbH.png

And the Orange Pi 5 has 8 cores, M.2, and runs Windows/Debian/Armbian. Its a desktop replacement and getting a LOT of attention.

I regard the Raspberry Pi as a legacy product because the competition is now 3+ years ahead. Eben Upton is using old Broadcom chips (because he used to work for them) and there are far better ARM alternatives eg Rockchip.

    • broadcom add extra alu so it’s special version for pi ….. which also means different production runs, pi control who makes boards etc …..but yeah, pi could probably get same performance now with a std chip , but then people could just copy boards, use pi software base and then upton might loose sales as now they need to compete on price …..

    • Yes there are lots of better alternatives. Thank you for being true ozbargain.

  • Will this run Home Assistant?

    • Haven't tried but from my research it looks like no. They recommend a 3 or above.

    • Also interested

    • cheaper to get an Optiplex 3040 USFF or similar from frequent OZB sales than RPI (not Pico), I run HA on Lenovo M700 USFF as Hyper-V

    • Technically it would probably run, but it would not run well. Better off going with a pi 4 (I have a 3B+ and it generally runs fine but occasionally struggles) or consider getting a second hand SFF pc, install ubuntu server with docker, and then install ha container on that (which is what I'm planning to migrate to in the future).

Pine64 boards are a great alternative they don't come with the same price tag and you get more power for your buck, I got their first board 6 years ago and it runs cooler than a Pi4 with the same software

If you're in Newcastle and don't mind a trip to Adamstown, pickup is free.

Only saying this as I've ordered from them countless times before I realised I could drive there and pick it up. No real storefront but they'll give you the item at the door once they say it's ready
