Get on board for WA Day Festival 2023

Thursday, 1 June 2023

  • WA Day to be bigger and better than ever as Western Australians urged to celebrate our State
  • State Government providing more than $2 million, including Lotterywest funding, to support WA Day activities
  • Free travel across the public transport network for two days over WA Day long weekend
  • Extra train services running between Stadium Station and Perth for WA Day Festival

Western Australians are being urged to get out this weekend and celebrate their State, with the WA Day Festival set to return even bigger than before.

The Perth WA Day Festival will run over Sunday and Monday, 4 and 5 June, with live entertainment, rides, food trucks, fireworks and drone light shows stretching from the Optus Stadium foreshore to Burswood Park.

To help celebrate the day, the State Government will provide free travel across the entire public transport network for the two festival days of the long weekend, as well as running extra train services between Stadium Station and Perth, allowing for a hassle-free journey to and from the event.

The additional train services mean trains will be travelling between Perth Station and Optus Stadium Station roughly every five minutes.

Elsewhere on the network, trains will operate every 10 to 15 minutes over the long weekend, while timetabled buses will operate on a Sunday/public holiday timetable across the Transperth network, with limited services after 7pm.

Up to 50 additional Public Transport Authority staff will be rostered on across the weekend to support the increased transport services, including train drivers and transit officers.

The festival marks the triumphant homecoming for local heroes Voyager, after their successful Eurovision campaign.

Voyager join an impressive line-up on the first day of the festival, alongside Amy Shark, Mark Seymour, Baby Animals and more.

WA Day events will also be held across the regions, including festivals in Albany, Kalgoorlie, Port Hedland, Newman, Carnarvon and Geraldton.

The State Government is providing $1.2 million to celebrate WA for WA Day events in both the city and the regions, with a further $900,000 from Lotterywest to support Perth and regional activities.

Comments attributed to Transport Minister Rita Saffioti:

"Western Australians know we live in the best State in the country - and this weekend is a chance to get out and celebrate all that's great about WA.

"Free public transport means this weekend will be an affordable day out for families right across Perth's suburbs.

"It'll also be the first opportunity for local crowds to welcome home Voyager, who so memorably put WA on the world stage at Eurovision this year.

"So make the most of the free public transport and get involved in the festivities of this year's WA Day, relax and let our free public transport service get you there safely and on time."

    What a great country

  • +4

Just be careful around Perth stations. Too many methheads wanting to fight me everytime i go to the city.

    • +2

      Just like Melbourne!

      • -1

I've taken the train on both places and Melbourne is far better. Much more educated and polite crowd in and far few meth addicts in comparison.

        • Stupidest fcuking seat configuration on Melbourne trains.

          • @wavesgreen: The seat configuration seems fine for me. I go into the train and sit on an empty seat if I find one, but I suppose it's more complicated than that.

But more importantly I'd take stupid seat configuration over meth addict co-passengers.

    • 😏at least in Perth we have spray, baton and cuff equipped officers in Bus and Trains

      • They do f'all.

        • At least they carry something in case

        • +4

I dunno. A few months ago I saw two of them detain an Aboriginal guy who was acting like a total f**K knuckle until the cops arrived and arrested him.

    • What line are you on? I find they do a really good job keeping the crackheads and f*wits off the Mandurah line. I can also recall back in the day when windows were always scratched up with tags and petty fights between non-deoderant wearers broke out on the regular, so it's much better now.

      • Armadale line unfortunately. The capital city of meth

  • I can't see anything on the link that says the buses and trains are free.

    • +3

travel on all Transperth services is free across both days.

      • Oh there are multiple links. Your main link doesn't mention it.

Does this mean I can catch a train from Mandurah to Perth and back for free?

  • +9

Love to see free public transport days, hope the turnouts are large enough to show the government we want more of them.

    • +1

Yeah I've been waiting on one for a while.

    • +4

They're meant to be free PT on the first Sunday of the every month anyway.

      • +1

Thanks for bringing this to my attention. Very useful:

WA Govt media statement - Free public transport on first Sunday each month

      • * The free travel will apply to people using SmartRider cards, so the number of rides can be tracked and the two-year policy assessed.

        • Good catch, that part is quite annoying.

          • @coxymla: Yeh, just looked it up. Takes the shine off it if you don't have one and wouldn't normally use it

"A standard SmartRider card costs $10 and you must add a minimum of $10 credit."

    • Next Sunday is also cause of Lakelands opening at midday

    • +1

It is near enough to free anyway. If they had to cover the full cost, airport line tickets would need to be $50, at current passenger numbers.

They could make it all free outside peak hours to increase use, at a relatively small increase in cost to taxpayers. But maybe afraid the wrong element would loiter on trains?

  • +1

Transit Officers are gonna be busy 😅

  • +3

Not a bad initiative actually. Gets people out and about, helping families celebrate on a budget.

    Inappropriate comment?
Ozbargain moderator overlords obviously don’t watch the Simpsons.

    Thanks McGowan Cook🫡

    • -1

Local news are calling him Captain Cook 🫡

  • +1

I just heard of the free parking at stations on weekends and public holidays. Really useful if you're going near a station then without good (i.e. free) parking options nearby.

  • -1

Daddy mcgowan going out in style

  • +2

This is to happen for every first Sunday of every month.

    • Yes and it sounds like it might be getting extended to Public Holiday Mondays.

We also have free days for station openings, next Sunday is the next free day.
