  • Is there a paid subscription with these

    • +4

Yes there is but there are still features available without the subscription.

What Ring Features Require a Subscription
Watch Recordings – Without a subscription your Ring doorbell won’t record any footage. So if you miss a visitor you be able to go back and see who it was. You also won’t be able to use the Ring as a security camera.
Save Recordings – Ring can’t save recording locally. They can only be saved to the cloud and can only be saved to Ring’s cloud service. Ring also doesn’t work with HomeKit, so like many other doorbells you can’t save video to iCloud.
People Only Mode – Get notifications only when Ring detects a person as opposed to any motion. This means you won’t get a notification when a stray cat walks by.

      What Ring Features are Free
These features don’t require any subscription. You don’t need to buy a monthly subscription when you have a Ring doorbell.
Motion Alerts – You can get alerted when your doorbell detects motion. Ring’s motion detection is fairly smart and you can set it up so only a certain area gets detected.
Two Way Talk – If you want to talk to whoever is at the door you can use the Two Way Talk feature. They’ll be able to talk back. This is really useful for talking with delivery people while you are at work!
Real Time Video – You can view what’s happening with Live Video.

      • This means you won’t get a notification when a stray cat walks by.

Our cat sometimes triggers the "person at door" notification when she's climbing up the front screen door.

Why on earth would you want to sign up for a subscription service like this

    • +7

Each to their own I guess, you don't have to sign up to the subscription if you don't want to.

Me personally, I probably spend $50 throughout the year on more useless stuff, so the subscription is not an issue for me.

    • Some people got money to burn bro

As much as I hate subscriptions, the alternatives could be more expensive and troublesome

E.g. eufy with local storage will probably be stolen if house is broken into.
        Same with local dvr
iCloud backup costs a subscription too

So to me it’s some peace of mind that the storage is not local and I can access it regardless.

        Cheers.

        • Serious question because I'm looking for a video door bell for my new property before I move in. How about something compared to like the reolink. Which most YouTubers love more?

          • @numnut: Don’t be fooled by YouTube experts. They go to extreme lengths to prove a point and differentiate, but most people need average setup and reliability. Setup a ring and get a subscription - super easy and less headache. Or go through so much trouble to save few bucks a year with questionable reliability (I have both but I enjoy mucking around with these)

      • Cheaper doesn't always mean better. For many people a service like this needs to be reliable and easy to use and it's worth the small fee for that.

But products like eufy might do the job depending on what you're actually wanting them to do. But remember that there are cons with local storage. As someone else said, it can get stolen, it could also be destroyed in a fire or flood or cyclone. But if that isn't an issue for you, fine.

  • Superb product and features 👍

  • You could buy the ReoLink doorbell and not pay a subscription.
It even comes in POE for those able to run it.. it’s fantastic.

EDIT: I’ve got one and I’ve even connected it via home bridge without any issue

    • Thanks Bro, could you share/recommend the ReoLink doorbell model? How much it cost?

  • This ring is old AF
