      Thanks, added that one

        • Thanks! Added to the description but can't add more to the title

          Note: the 20TB works out more expensive per TB.

          20TB = $16.45/TB
          18TB = $15.51/TB
          16TB = $15.58/TB
          12TB = $15.79/TB

          • +3

            @RichardL: 20TB is $15.625 if you get 2 (with 5% discount)

            • +5

              @congo: Same can be said for all the other sizes as they all qualify for 'Buy 2, get 5% off'.

          • @RichardL: Ended up going for the 18TB. I'm hoping I don't regret passing up on the 20TB.

          • @RichardL: The 16tb Pro being the same p/TB as the 12TB not-Pro is a cruel carrot that sadly starts to add up in $$ when you wanna buy 5 of the bloody things

            • @sob baget: Is there really that much difference? I just ended up going with 4x 12tb because I am not sure I can do another $1k on HDDs lol.

          jv: QNAP
          Everyone else: Synology

          • @Clear: Qnap 👍

            • @Bretttick: I use Qnap. CPU can be upgraded from i3 to i7. Synology uses Celeron or Xeon Intel CPUs.

              • +1

                @fatice: QNAP needs all the CPU it can get to process the ransomware. ;-)

                • +2

                  @ddr0001: I have used both. They are similar, but Qnap has the CPU and RAM for my VMs, apps, and services.

                • @ddr0001: My 2013 qnap cpu processes ransomware with ease 🤣

    • Build one, you will not regret it, go for the Synology EOFY sale!

  • +4

    More tempting than a JB Perks deal.

  • +4

    these are some crazy prices, wow

  • +1

    Oof, no 14tb? My NAS uses only 14tb Ironwolfs, and needs one replaced.

    • +6

      you could probably use a 16TB without issue, most redundant disk systems allow larger replacements

      • Thanks, I was just about to ask this.

  • -1

    SMR?

    What's the difference between the "HDD PRO" and the "Ironwold Pro" options?

  • +2

    Awesome, beat me to posting, was gonna be my first post too :P

    • +3

      Sorry! I was spamming my friends the prices as I saw them and realised I should just post it here.

        8 TB = $12.46/TB

        • 18TB = $26.22/TB in Dec :(

          should I stick with 18TB or 20TB is fine?

  • Tempted.. currently using 7 yo 3x WD Red and 4 yo Hitachi.. 3TB each..
    Been thinking to upgrade to at least 6TB..

    Is seagate ironwolf better than WD Red? More reliable and durable?
    What do you guys do with old NAS drives?

    • I've been using ironwolf/pros for years without issue.

      • Yeah I've been running an 8tb for 4 years and a 12 tb for 3 years now, hasn't skipped a beat.

    • This i would also like to know, got 2x 4tb reds 9 yo in qnap ts-221 going strong but running low on available space

    What cheap item can i add to qualify for the bonus 5% off?

        How do people find these so quick haha

        • +1

          I found it in a previous ozb deal recently haha, came in handy for something else I was buying

        • +1

          Damn it, just saw this, bought the one above instead in a mad flurry to avoid FOMO. Could have given to my 2yo..

          This drive will do nicely to support my bluray remux hoarding habit for years to come..

          • @mith: I just cancelled and made a new order with the new book. Same as you, this can actually be utilised AND save 20c haha

        • Nice thank you!

  • you can get another 5% off if you buy 2!

    • Only off 1 though I noticed

      • Incorrect. 5% off applies to both.

        • -1

          I just tried it again. It is only applying the discount for 1 of the HDDs.
          20TB = $328.89

          Summary:
          Items: $657.78
          Delivery: $0.00
          Total: $657.78
          Promotion(s) Applied: -$32.89
          Order Total: $624.89

          • +4

            @ra1k0: 5% x $328.89 = $16.4445, so discount does apply to both items.

            • @zeno: WOOOOOWWW… My bad; All I can do is say that it is late and I should really go to bed… xD

              • +1

                @ra1k0: You’re welcome.

                • +1

                  @UncleRico: Currently both opposing comments are still negative in votes!

                  • @UsernameChecksIn: Indeed. I didn't mean to upset him, but very clearly his calculations and information were incorrect.

                    Happy to wear a couple of negs if it means getting the right word out to any other prospective buyers about such a great deal from the OP. Humility is a flower which doesn't grow in every garden…

    just be careful warranties. amazon apparently doesn't do warranty after 30 days & some manufacturer force you to claim via reseller

    • +2

      You can push Amazon to handle warranty via their live chat.

      Make sure you understand your rights under ACL before starting

      • Does ACL apply to Amazon US as the seller?
        Is manufacturer warranty not valid since the items are in US not AU?

        • +3

          Amazon will tell you no but it absolutely does. If I didn't know how consumer regulation worked I'd say that it was astonishing that the ACCC allows it.

          • @Moondog: Getting the impression that Amazon customer service processes continue deteriorating

        • It's through amazon.com.au. So the US part is irrelevant. If you had bought it from the .com store then yes, you would then be out of luck via ACL

      • I have never in all my years using Amazon even have to mention the ACL, and I've pushed my luck on several items.

    • +2

      Australian Consumer Law.

      I've returned hard drives to Amazon (AU and UK) more than a year after purchasing without issue. I don't even bother contacting the manufacturer.

  • So ive currently got 3x 14TB drives in my NAS (one is broken), but i got them from china, and even those were more than this. So I could either grab a 16 or 18tb drive to replace the borken one, and have an odd size in there, or just straight up grab 4 of these and upgrade the whole thing. Not sure now. It already has a lot stored on it, and im not sure how difficult it'd be to replace the drives. I'd have to do 1 at a time i guess. I'm using RaidZ.

    • +1

      You have a couple options:

      Enable autoexpand on the pool, and replace one drive at a time, and the pool will grow. This has a limitation of you keeping the same zfs config as you have currently, i.e. 3x drives in a RAIDZ1. This method is really only beneficial if you are purchasing the larger drives slowly one at a time.

      or

      Make a new pool with however many drives in whatever zfs config, and zfs send/recv the old pool to the new pool. Personally I'd do this, as in this case as you are planning to replace all the drives in one go anyway.

  • Are they going the slash HDD prices? Fk I am travelling overseas next week so can’t get them now

    • Send them to your parents or friends

  • Got 2 X 8Gb barracuda for extra 5% off sweet thanks op

    • +3

      Just remember that barracuda one is 5400 rpm if that matters to you.

      • +1

        Not really photo storage only

      • +2

        Also SMR for anyone else playing at home.

      • +1

        Lower rpm could save power and give less heat. but I would choose CMR and 5-year warranty

    What's the packaging on US shipped drives like these days?
    The frustration free packaging detail makes me concerned that it's just the drive in an empty cardboard box.

    • +1

      No one on ozbargain has posted the packaging of hdd's, so the rumour is it's bad and they end up dead on arrival

      However if that were true, they'd be the first ones shouting from the rooftops…

      Fingers crossed…

    • +6

      I bought a couple of WD 10TBs end of Dec from Amazon AU (sold by Amazon US) and received both in same box.
      Inside the box each hard drive was in it's own hard drive shipping box, with the drives supported by plastic holders on each side.
      I was happy with how they shipped them.

      • Thanks for the review

      • +1

        My recent Amazon US order of a WD Red Plus was shipped like this too. It looked protective enough.

    • +6

      Here's some that I got from Amazon US, in August 2021. I got 4x 16tb drives.
      https://imgur.com/a/ENN0npW

      • Drives have been flawless

    • Bought 2x 18TB in Dec, couldn't remember the packaging, looked safe and okay, and worked well until now. The only thing these drives annoyed me is the thunder sound mostly during the bootup time

      • What kind of case do you have yours in? Mine is in a Node 304 and pretty damn quiet.

    • +1

      I've only ordered one via amazon US and it came DOA and in pretty awful packaging. But I'm willing to risk it at these prices. Paid like $400 for a 12tb then(2021). So the same for $189 now is worth the risk. Especially as the return process was insanely painless.

  • +3

    Bought 2 x 16gb pro with 5% off = $473.67 = $236 each. = 14.78 per gb

  • Perfect timing. Needed a cheap HDD for desktop.

  • +1

    Can anyone comment on the warranty on these? Do you have to ship them back to US?

    • +1

      Yeah I want to know this as well before pulling the trigger..

  • what a price! I paid around $320 for 14tb ironwolf pro few months ago

  • Just bought 2 x 16tb Pro. Had ordered 2 x 16tb WD Reds for about $750 a couple of weeks ago but they've been taking ages to ship from Amazon US so I'll now cancel that order and save over $250!

    Edit: Amazon were about to ship them so I may end up with 4 drives soon! Lol. Oh well, always need more drives in the NAS anyway.
    Edit 2: Cancellation was successful, now regretting only buying 2! Tempted to buy one more, and a 5800x3D for the 5% discount.

    • How did u cancel it? I talked to Amazon, and been told that my item is shipped. I can not cancel now. Need to wait once deliver and request return.

      • My drives hadn't been shipped - and I'd bought them at the beginning of April. They had just charged me for them though. Must have been out of stock and waiting for a resupply. If it was a couple of days later I'd probably have to do the same as you.

        • Okie, thanks for the information!

  • Hope these are packaged properly when sent!

  • +2

    What’s to stop you from using one of these “NAS” drives in standard install in a desktop?

    • +4

      Nothing.

    • +4

      Absolutely nothing. Might be recommended even as the NAS ones are CRM vs the Barracuda which is SRM which is the inferior tech. If the storage is for read/write and not just static files or backup, then the Ironwolfs may be the better fit.

      • +1

        FYI - SMR vs CMR, not SRM vs CRM.
