Rebate on International ATM Operator Fees until 31 July 2023 for Orange Everyday Accounts (Monthly Criteria Applies) @ ING

21035

ING is NUKING their ATM operator fee rebates on international withdrawals from 1 August 2023. (An Operator Fee is charged by an ATM operator for transaction and enquires made at their ATMs.) As such, can no longer be used to withdraw cash with no operator fee to do things overseas such as buy dishwashers or look at monkey attractions.

Credit to user 'chiwi' who brought this up here and "currentfad" for finding the ToS. Ozbargain now announces this news before ING even announce this date to their own customer service reps or their own customers lol:

  • Thoughts on this?

What I like about UP is if there’s any issues you can just write to them within the app.

That page states that the international ATM operator fees are still payable by the customer - it’s only that UP doesn’t charge you a fee, which makes it the same as ING is about to become.

but without the $1k deposit and 5 transactions a month I guess

  • Had one of these accounts for years, looks like I'll be shopping for a replacements soon.

Currently in Europe, use ING everyday (never have cash except toilet money) just checked - rebates $269 on fees FYTD
SO my take is carry on, never use an atm anyway.
Had Citi in the past and wasted my life trying to find one of “their” ATMs ( like follow the map, look for 20 minutes - it’s not there anymore, blah blah
Will check out Macbank for upcoming Japan, happy days.
    Is this a bargain?
BTW I have been to ATMs in the past ( particularly Thailand) where the machine has charged $15 for a withdrawal - so I guess on the odd occasion that I do need cash I will need to be more careful ( but you fall back into the Citi thing - see above)
Also - always withdraw at the local currency and don’t accept the machines conversion rate 💩

  • This is about the worst news I have heard this year….

I travel at least once a month and have relied on this card for several years now.

    Any good alternatives?

  • Very disappointing. Agreed that this isn’t a deal since it’s being revoked

    Don't mess this up ING

  • When I first time sign up ING, they has 2/3% cashback when you tap. And then they cut it. And now, they cut the ATM fees too. Considering change to another bank.

  • Just received the email, thanks for letting us know in advance, but negging since this is a stinker by ING

Saved 500 last year and 400 year before…

Super sad to see it go!

But likely the card will too in spite

Saved 500 last year and 400 year before

It must be costing them a fortune, imagine these sort of numbers spread over thousands of customers !

      • +1

They could have limited it to 2 per month or 5 per year or a something along those lines… would have been a better option than scrapping it completely

        • It used to be unlimited then 5 per month now nothing.

These days I don't take any foreign currency with me when I leave, and just make the first withdrawal at the airport on arrival. My last trip spanned across 2 months and I think about 7 ING withdrawals all up in Qatar, and South America. ING saved me $370 in ATM operator fees during this trip. Some operator fees were horrendous for international cards, one operator in Chile even charged a fee based on the amount withdrawn. ING made travelling more convenient not having to go ATM to ATM find lower fees. This change means ING now has no benefit over the Ubank, 28 Degrees, and Citibank cards that I already travel with that don't charge exchange fees. ING is already a pain having to make the $2000 deposit, grow the account, make and 5 transactions a month to qualify for the rewards, and then still only paying bonus interest on up to $100,000. This is now good reason to leave ING, you no longer have a point of difference.

You took a bit of time to think through and compose that messgae. I hope you'll copy and paste it to ING themselves. It won't make any difference to the outcome, but they need to know their customers' reactions to this decision.

  • argh i have holidays in July-August. I guess I'll be using up my 5 withdrawals entire July! thankfully i visit mostly cashless cities these days, although i prefer to use cash to pay for 'incognito' activities lol.

  • … it’s obvious that banks don’t want a shopfront where they have to deal with “real people”. Just charge us suckers a fee to withdraw our own money via ATMs !!!

Terrible bank, ban customers for no reason

  • I guess we now better use wise.com card? At least you get better exchange rate….

      Do you recommend it?

So far with wire transfers, I'm good and I like idea that they allow you to exchange earlier into your wallet and spend.

I'm not too sure with cash withdraw from ATM but my experience in South Korea was pretty good on using it.

Lucky I kept my Citibank plus account

  • Currently in Italy and the atm fee in about $7

    • Wow, damn!

      • Better than accepting their exchange rate (which I mistakenly did the first time) which was $45

This is such a sad sad day! I have had many years of carefree travel never needing to worry where I used and ATM or who owned it. My highlight was needing a small top up of cash on my last day in Greenland, $20 withdrawn and ING refunded the operator fee of $13.
I would be great if they kept it at 5 transactions but with a minimum $200 withdrawal or something.
Like many, I have stopped using ING for most things in Oz, really only used it overseas. The hurdles never mattered as I have a home loan with them.
Now I am going to have to work out if it is better to carry extra USD/EUR and exchange that instead of using an ATM when I only need a little cash.
