Rebate on International ATM Operator Fees until 31 July 2023 for Orange Everyday Accounts (Monthly Criteria Applies) @ ING

21035

ING is NUKING their ATM operator fee rebates on international withdrawals from 1 August 2023. (An Operator Fee is charged by an ATM operator for transaction and enquires made at their ATMs.) As such, can no longer be used to withdraw cash with no operator fee to do things overseas such as buy dishwashers or look at monkey attractions.

Credit to user 'chiwi' who brought this up here and "currentfad" for finding the ToS. Ozbargain now announces this news before ING even announce this date to their own customer service reps or their own customers lol:

The withdrawal of a much-loved benefit is a deal?

    • +31

      More a PSA I guess…

      • +4

I'd like to see a new banner, similar to how we have one for "Targeted", for announcements like these and UBank lifting its HiSA rate etc.

    • +6

A front page deal at that.
Why are people upvoting the removal of a benefit???

      • +50

The deal deserves a neg to send a message to ING.

      • -8

Do you downvote a sale/promotion because it expires in 7 days?
Its still a good deal. They have just put an end date on it.

        • +12

It was a good deal when it started - and it got plenty of upvotes then.
It is not a good deal when it ends - which is what this is.

    • +19

surely this post will be kept as a deal defying all ozbargain rules because we just have too many in the community that benefit from this PSA whereas other deals that slightly breaks any rules/posting guidelines get taken down so quickly…

      • +2

Unfortunately, PSAs are becoming far more common on OzBargain, like when a movie/TV show Streaming service releases a new movie/TV show

        • +1

At least the subs one are easier to unsubscribe as they already fall under a specific category. This one is not.

Imagine if the government decides to remove childcare rebates completely then someone will post "OMG the childcare rebate is ending on 30th June" and posts as a deal ending 30th of June.

    • +1

Campervans used to have that slogan:
Once you withdraw you lose interest!

    • .. So sad -;)

  • +97

Not a deal but a PSA I'm glad I saw

  • +1

Hey OP, just wondering where it says international atm benefit is being withdrawn? In the attached PDF it says:
    Rebates on ING
    international ATM
    withdrawal fees may
    be available for eligible
    customers.

Doesn't that mean there is still rebates if you meet the criteria?

    • +2

Doesn't that mean there is still rebates if you meet the criteria?

ING will waive their own $5 fee on some occasions but they will never reimburse the operator ATM fee like they have up until 1 August.

      • +26

Bloody hell, this is the only reason I'm still with ING. They once reimbursed $13 for a $50 withdrawal overseas, now I'm not sure what other options.

        • +3

          Citibank probably?

          • +1

@lesher: Each of those require their own ATM branches, ING offered flexibility in not having to hunt out specific ATMs.

          • @lesher: They have also opted out.

          • @lesher: They will remove it as well next month. But only for new account. If you already have an account then you are good to go.

        • +1

Macquaire has the best card for this. No ongoing account keeping fee, very good exchange rates and they reimburse ATM fees.

          • @paaj: Is this domestic only?

            • -3

@ATangk: nope - just used in Bali :)

              • +9

                @paaj:

However, please note that the ATM operator in the country you’re travelling to may still charge their own fee

Perhaps your ATM in Bali didn't charge an operator fee. The ING benefit is that they would reimburse for ATM operator fees too.

                • +1

@ATangk: Yeh sorry was trying to edit my comment to say maybe operator didn't charge. I got good exchange rates so overall it was a good card with zero hoops (no minimum deposit or transactions needed)

                • @ATangk: This. Bali ATMs don't charge a fee. I've been here a few days and used three different ones including comm bank and no fee.
Whereas in Philippines for example they usually charge about ten bucks which sucks

          • +1

            @paaj:

            they reimburse ATM fees.

Not for international ATMs. ING had a rebate for international ATMs, so was good for travel. They reduced it to 5 per month, and soon to be zero

        • Me too, me too!

        • +2

Yep exactly. I was in Seoul 2 weeks ago, and ING reimbursed me ~$30 for withdrawing a total of $200.
Most ATM's there have a W50,000 (~$50) or a W100,000(~$100) withdrawal limit. And most things were cash only. Hence I had to make multiple withdrawals.

    • -1

Yep does appear to read that way?

    • +10

No ING will waive their own made up fee

    • +9

If you clicked on the Orange Everyday Benefits Schedule link in the sentence after what you pasted in your comment, it says that the rebate for fees charged by international ATM operators will no longer be rebated (effective 01 August 2023).

It says towards the top of page 1 under Orange Everyday Benefits:

… you’ll receive the following banking benefits on each of your Orange Everyday accounts for transactions carried out on those accounts in that month:

      • Rebates on ATM fees for the first 5 fee incurring ATM withdrawals (excludes international ATM operator fees);

The table at the top of page 2 says under the Rebate Details column:

There are no rebates available for international ATM operator fees.

Under the When we won’t rebate an ATM fee section below the aforementioned table, it says:

ATM fee rebates do not apply to:

      • any fees charged by an international ATM operator.
  • I wonder what the currency conversion fees are? I'm heading to Japan in may and this sounds really convenient

    • +2

      Read the link. 3%

      • +2

There aren't any fees if you meet the monthly requirements, exchange rate is not determined by the banks but by Visa and Mastercard themselves.

      • If you want avoid these fees and continue receiving a rebate on ATM fees, consider Macquarie.

    • +19

I'm in Japan now. Use Citibank debit card. Allows you to withdraw fee free at 7Eleven ATM and it's only a difference of 0.7% between spot price.

      • +21

Macquarie is also great for this.

        no account fees
no atm fees (atm operator fees may apply, so find a fee-free atm)
        all aussie atm fees refunded
no foreign exchange fees (same as 28 degrees, citibank)
pays 4% interest on your account balance, with no hoops.

        • Never been charged an operator fee in last 5 years. Except possibly in the marriott fiji hotel which had a weird built in fee.
This card has been great for the in shop ATM's like 7eleven

        • Haven't tried the Macquarie because I found that atm fees gets embedded into the withdrawal and hard to know which atm are free overseas.

          • @nightelves: I thought ATMs had to show you the fee for processing transactions before proceeding.

          • +1

@nightelves: i think there's a spreadsheet on the web somewhere with a list of free atms in each country.

            • @eggboi: I'd love to see this, do you have a link?

              • @ttfb: unfortunately not. i remember coming across it in 2016 when i was heading to japan. i think it was a whirlpool hosted thing. that's all i've got!

                • @eggboi: are you referring to this. It is for citi plus accounts so focused on listing free citi ATMs or other branded ATMs which are free to use.

        • +3

Found it! Turns out it has nothing to do with Whingepool. But it looks like the most recent update was 2020…

          https://community.revolut.com/t/the-ultimative-free-atm-with…

There are more recent posts in the thread, but the dropbox spreadsheet is potentially outdated. Better than nothing, I suppose.

      • Is there a date when the Citi debit card withdrawal is valid till? I tried called them last week on 2 seperate occasions and one cso told me it has cease while another told me it is is still available. Confusing as hell, hence, I setup up the HSBC account for the same purpose.

        • +3

Note that HSBC use their own bank FX rate, not the Visa/MasterCard rate.

        • +1

They are stopping new applications for Citi products from 20 May so they may make an announcement after that

      • Is this the citibank plus account ? Do they have a withdrawal limit for fee free ? 0.7% difference is great if they don have the 3% foreign charges

        • +1

No foreign fee. I did the calculation through Xe. Fee free can be upto $3k per day. You have to call up to Citi to get them to increase this limit or else it's $1k per day.

      • +1

Note no new Citibank Plus accounts can be opened after mid-May. Whether existing customers get moved to an equivalent NAB product remains to be seen.

        • I went to apply for a Citibank Plus and it has the following information

The Citibank Plus Account is issued by NAB and will transition to the equivalent NAB product later this year, which may mean a variation to the product features and benefits.

      • Where do you get the "Spot" price? Just from google? or from RBA?

      • I was also recently in Japan using the ING card to withdraw from 7Eleven ATMs. However they were charging me 220 yen per withdrawal (rebated), weird how they charge ING but not Citibank.

        • +1

Have Citibank fee free withdraw is so handy in Japan especially because 7Eleven is everywhere

          • @nightelves: The fee is charged by the ATM operator though (7-11) not the bank, which makes me wonder why Citibank works. Unless Citibank are rebating you which I'm not aware of.

        • We also just got back from Japan. Even accounting for the 220 yen rebated fee, Macquarie rate was better than ING (withdrawing within 1 minute of each other) so it sounds like no transaction fees, for anyone interested.

          • @Mattz0r: I think this is because Macquarie uses the Mastercard rate whereas the ING is Visa. Mastercard is known to have slightly better conversion rates than Visa most of the time.
Also apparently the 7-11 ATMs only charge the ATM fee for Visa cards.

        • However they were charging me 220 yen per withdrawal

Wow they have doubled the fee. Used to be 110 yen pre COVID. What a rip.

        • it is possible the atm access fee is worked into (subtracted from) the converted withdraw amount instead of listed as a separate transaction.

      • Going Japan in June:

Which is best for EFT Payments: ING/Citibank?
        ATM Withdraws?

        • +1

I used citibank for cash. Bankwest Zero master for EFT.

          • @clover: Why did you use the Bankwest for eft instead of Citibank for all?

    • Same boat, what about paywave using ING in Japan? Any extra fees waived off?

      • +3

For a country like Japan that's technologically advance they rarely have paywave and Apple Pay. You have to insert your card into the terminal.

        • Interesting.

Even after covid , they're still over 50% cash payment over POS retail , follows by 32% credit card , 10% digital wallet , 3% debit card

      • +1

Paywave is just contactless Visa, charges should be no different, but operators may not support it.

I guess the doubters in this thread need to apologies https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/768968#comment-13634363

    • Closing this account now. Haha

  • +1

just like C Haddock's said "Billions and billions of blue blistering barnacles!"

  • How can you tell it is free rebate on Int ATM withdrawals until 01/08 ? This is probably a draft PDF for the upcoming updated on the benefits.

  • +37

ING becoming less and less attractive as the people's choice of bank 😂

    • +5

"The most recommended bank of the year" they claimed lol 😂 probably the year of 2000

      • +5

remember back about 12 years ago, they'd pay you to open up an account with them?

        • +2

I got $100 to open their account and 5% cashback on pay wave transactions of $99 or less.

          • +3

@T-man: and no stupid hoops to jump through to get some interest. those were the days..

    • Still 1% cashback on utility bills and good savings interest rate.

  • +4

Uh oh, I need to find a new card for overseas purchases when traveling and ATM withdrawals.

Not exactly a deal, but thanks for the notification.

    What's the next best card?

    • +2

Check out the Wise card. New product, very competitive on exchange and ATM fees.

      • Does the digital Wise card work at ATMs?

        • +1

Just checked for you and no - I can't see any way you could use the digital card at an ATM.

          • @Webber000: How can you use digital card at ATM?

            • +1

@timhn: You read it wrong - I said you can't.
I checked in case the app has the ability to generate a cashless code like some ATMS accept or do contactless like NFC through the phone - but doesn't seem anything is possible.

          • @Webber000: @Webber000 Thankyou for checking

      • +2

Can only withdraw fee-free with Wise up to 350AUD per month? Anything above that is $1.50 plus 1.75% per withdrawal. Sounds expensive.

      • Plus with Wise, I haven't been able to find anywhere that doesn't also charge an operator fee on top.
(So you'll pay 1.75% plus $1.50 to wise AND $7 in my case for the ATM operator, but I guess it varies a lot by country).

Out of interest does anyone know any ATM in Australia you can use a Wise card with no extra ATM fee?

    • -1

      Citi or UBank

      • +1

Citi might be a difficult recommendation at the moment.

At time of writing, "after 20 May 2023 we [Citi] will no longer be accepting new applications for Citibank Online Saver, Citibank Plus Account and the Cash Investment Account".

Whilst nothing known about timelines for integration, grandfathering product features, etc. - just something I'd be cautious about.

        • Given that similar features are available with a NAB owned UBank account I was assuming/hoping they just keep it

        • That’s for new applications, it will still work for sometime if you already get Citi bank plus account before may 20. I can’t say for how much longer tho.

        • I also just received a closing account notification unless I deposited money, which I just did having seen this deal/PSA!

          • +1

@Tgb: Just throw $1 in, worked for me :)

        • +1
