Temu is a new marketplace by Pinduoduo that's similar to AliExpress. As part of their launch they have these coupons, as well as free shipping on all orders and you'll get AU$5 store credit if your order arrives late (standard shipping only). According to scotty the delivery times are quick to Australia.

This launch offer ends at 11:59pm AEST tonight, so get your orders in quick. Apparently the sale doesn't end… we shall see.

The only downside I can see so far is that there's a $15 minimum spend and while the currency is in AUD it's still an overseas store so you may get hit with an international transaction fee.

Anyone else find they have to join up before they can browse?

      That’s how crappy Wish worked.
I also find the same with Instagram and Pinterest.

Lol these coupons and the free shipping are funny as they apparently expire but then you just get new ones every single day. Certainly dont spend above $110 at a time as the next day you will get another voucher with the same code and free shipping etc.

Wonder when the sale actually ends.

It doesn't end tonight because it said it ended on Thursday then Friday then Saturday then Sunday etc

    • We'll just have to wait and see then.

  • +1

ohh, be ready to see hundreds of people post referral links in the following weeks.

Its the international version of Chinese app Pinduoduo, and it's probably the most downloaded spying app in the West.
    https://techaeris.com/2023/04/02/security-experts-say-the-pi…

Pretty sure it will be banned very soon after TikTok.
    No thanks.

I was waiting for that The Temu app didn't ask me for funny permissions and even with more sensitive permissions blocked it still works. YMMV and not saying it doesn't spy ofc.

      • Of course it didn't ask you.
It doesn't have to. Your decision is irrelevant to them.

        • +1

The app can't gain access to things like my photos, location etc. if my phone blocks the permissions. If you're an iOS user I can understand you not understanding Android app permissions and how they work.

          • @Clear: Please read the article above and google the definition of "malware".
I don't know how they do so, I am not an expert. But they are able to found a way to bypass Android settings.

            • +3

@AsukaST: It's not the same app though. This app is what the article refers to.

              • @Clear: It's the same company. Or parent company I should say.
If you really think it's a clean app, I will stop here.

            • @AsukaST: Android created those settings why is another party able to "bypass". The creator of the settings shouldn't have allowed for it nor have the infrastructure for such. Google which is an American company trusted worldwide - shouldn't a company that big have measure to not allow for sure actions?

                @Sheng:

Google which is an American company trusted worldwide

                😬

        • That’s not how phone permissions work.

    • +3

You have a choice to download or not. You willing give all your details to American operating systems no problem and your not even given a choice at that (sorry open source OS your ain't that popular still). Microsoft, Google (Android) and Apple (IOS).

What about apps like SHEIN with Chinese roots but Singaporean operations… (I mean people made an issued about a Singaporean CEO for Tiktok and not the company).

      • It's pretty funny that you'll get downvoted for saying it, because somehow people think it doesn't happen. Then again with how many pro-Putin supporters there are around here it's not surprising people have skewed views.

        • +2

It always the debate who to is the "bad actor". If this is "downloadable malware" why hasn't Apple or Google taken it down or added a downloader disclaimer?

I am almost certain that Google, Apple and Microsoft facilitate "more" malicious intent actions like malware via gmail, icloud or even messenger apps. But you don't see them bad light entirely.

          • +2

@Sheng: I've worked for Chinese, European and Australian telecommunication service providers. There's certainly a lot of data being handed over by all 3 that would be labelled as "malicious" by security experts. They have the legal obligation. It's like using a US based VPN service provider… if you're doing the wrong thing and the authorities come knocking they will hand the data over.

            • @Clear: Interesting! Why only US based? Does that not happen to VPNs based elsewhere?

              • +1

@wisdomtooth: It was an example. Other countries have similar laws. Just assume you're being spied on all the time.

            • +2

@Clear: Not only that, if US ask for australian's activitiy within AU, our goverment will just hand them over without our consent, not even bother to inform us. Also the real case is US ordered chinese company to hand over client's data located in China, for their US case trial, and US did charge daily penalty to that chinese company. From the fact cleally we should worry US's wrong doing over any other country.

@leetec: Welcome to the Five Eyes alliance.

                • @Clear: you can mention the Five Eyes like it's nothing.

Try mentioning its links to People's Liberation Army and see it's responses

                  • +2

@HK Refugee: I did say above that I've worked for a Chinese telecom provider and that was in the enterprise/government sector of Australia. I'm very much aware 😉

Funny how Huawei gets a government ban and DFAT still use Chinese software and hardware providers.

                  • @HK Refugee:

Try mentioning its links to People's Liberation Army

Please do; I hadn't heard of that. I thought they were competing for imperial dominance.

    • Meh, raw sinophobia. Mostly all tech co's grab as much data as they can get away with. Most of all "don't be"—but is!—"evil" Google! I, for one, prefer to be spied on by a foreign govt than my own (or one it's a vassal of, i.e. the US). What's the CCP gonna do with my data?? F all. Now, Australia's… I can understand CCP spying being a problem for people with family in China (or perhaps even its sphere of influence in SE Asia), but other than that…

This is a shopping site not app only, use your brain not only your ear to making false claim.

  • How do you get a referral code on desktop?

  • +1

So just based on what I've seen through their aggressive and dodgy Marketing, "coupons", deals etc I'd be very wary

"Nintendo switch for $4?!! Only on Temu"

That being said you'll likely get the cheap crap you are expecting for the cheap price if that's what you are after, but never anything good, and all your data will go at the same time

    Annoying….the adv always pop up
