Or buy the AX86U for $369

Combine with this cashback promo from ASUS

    https://www.asus.com/au/events/info/3925

    • +1

wow, so that's $30 cashback if I am not wrong?

    • What am I missing out on if I get this one over the AX86U?

      • +6

Much better WIFI coverage, better WIFI speed at the higher end, better core for connectivity for 30+ devices, etc.

        • +6

I have double that number on my old asus and this one, never noticed any difference. The only thing that holds you back is the connection outside the house. Ax86 and above is nice to have but in reality you rarely push it to the limit to see the difference.

          • +4

@lgacb08: Realistically, it depends on what you're doing in your house.

I have a NAS and use VR, so the difference is noticeable for me. The range is also improved over my previous setup.

As always, if you don't have problems or don't need an improvement - don't upgrade.

      • +2

I'd probably just get the cheaper one if I didn't already have my own gear. North of 300 for a consumer router is crazy.

Just did a quick Google, the cheaper model run runs AIMesh as well. Yeah, unless there's a real problem with this model, I'd just get 2 or 3 of them rather than a single 86U.

You and OP are the real MVP’s :’)
Glad I woke up and checked

$30 cashback brings it down to $70

Edit: Might need to buy two routers to be eligible, terms & conditions is a bit confusing.

    • +2

I asked them the other day, you need to have one already to claim but the claim form doesn't ask you though to input the serial no for the 1st router. So how do they know if you already bought one before?

    • -1

If I bought one 3 weeks ago, can I still get cashback?

    • Super tempting for $70 but even then, can't justify upgrading my backhauled AC68U on mesh.

  • I just bought this from Amazon for $159 last week. Does amazon have any price guarantee and will they refund the difference?

    • Wondering same

    • Have to return and buy again from them

    • My experience is that in the past they gave credit, but now they require the item to be sent back for a refund.

Even telling them that its unopened and that they could swap the items at their end is not enough.

      • +1

What if I've opened it and bought another one from this deal. Would they know that I've returned the brand new one from this deal, but would be claiming a return on the one I bought a few weeks back?
        Any advice would be appreciated

        • -1

I think it depends on your reason for returning.

Often I select the item as 'defective', in which case I do believe they simply discard the item. Under that reason, I get the full refund plus free return.

If you select 'change of mind' or similar, you'll have to pay for the return shipping fee.

I've not always been honest with my returns under the 'defective' reason - they've never contacted me to supply any of the 'missing parts' I may have retained.

Unless the packaging is totally different and clearly not the right product, then I think you returning 'same-same but same' will be okay, even if it's opened. However, in your case, you'd be simply returning an 'unopened' product - the worst you would likely encounter is having to pay for the return postage.

  • Currently using Telstra gen 2 smart modem, getting solid 110 download speed (according to speed test) on a 110/20 nbn plan. Only 2 of us in a small apartment. Now wifi 6 compatible devices. Any benefit to purchasing this for our use case?

    • +23

This router will improve your download speed from a solid 110 to a rock-solid 110. Plus, your latency will reduce from almost something to almost nothing

      • +2

Brilliant description. Also, I can confirm as I have done exactly this.

Local wifi is way better now, can stream over the road at the park now, while kids play :P

    • +3

no the SMG2 is a great device for the money I doubt you would notice a difference

    • +2

That Telstra router is surprisingly good. Only downside is the settings are kinda locked down but that's fine for most people

Expired - showing $229 at checkout

      U mean end of life?

      • "388.2 may possibly be the last release for the RT-AX56U, as Asus opted not to move this model to the 388 codebase, meaning that they cannot guarantee that future 388 GPLs for this model will be possible"

        • +1

          What’s a good alternative to AX56U?

        • +3

This is just the third party alternative firmware for Asus routers, but the official firmware will still be supported?

  • Price back to $229

  • Seems to be a lot of shift workers or insomniacs on OB!!

    • Or live in WA.

      • That makes up for 2 hours end to end…

  • +1

I already bought this one before for $120ish and can confirm that it's legit

  • Sorry I wasn't up at 2am to see this! I've been looking at the Asus repeater (usually around $190!) for some low-bandwidth IoTs, but this is much better value.

  • Paid 160 for this last week. Woke up and saw the camels email at 7am and it was already gone

  • buy the RT-AX86U and RT-AX56U and get yourself a pretty good Aimesh network.

  • Need the ASUS RT-AX86U Pro.

  • With the deal expired now, not many will see this, but …..

It supports AiMesh but with limited capabilities. It will not work as the master and as a node does not support various features such as binding a device to a selected router. Not good at all with IoT devices. I returned mine and bought the AX55 to use as a node.

    • +1

Is this true? Website says it can be used as the master

      • +1

I've used mine as a node and had no issues whatsoever.

I can also use it as a master, all i had to do was update it to the latest firmware and it had all the normal AiMesh settings.

Thank God for price protection. Although latitude has been super slow since the cyber attack to pay them off… If paid at all… Claim from 18/03 still not cleared

you arnt talking about the BNPL section of that company but rather there cards ?

      • +1

Nah grand fathered price protection from 28 degrees. Their BNPL was just a failure, They were years late. Tells a lot about their "strategy" team.

    • Came looking for others experiencing this delay and slightly reassured to see this comment. Mine from 19/3 onwards are also still pending.

  • i needed one of these but somehow missed it again.

    • +3

I didn't need one and somehow missed it. Why am I even here.
