  • I'm still using the laptop from this deal 5 years ago https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/514623. It suits me fine and the battery still lasts really well, not too many complaints. However it's started to randomly go to a black screen and then freezing where only a hard power off and on will fix it. I'm going to reformat the drive and install a fresh copy of windows 11 and see if that fixes it.

In saying that, it's been 5 years and I'm probably due for an upgrade. One thing I don't like about my current laptop is the display is pretty ordinary.

Would this ASUS be a noticeable upgrade? Is there anything it's missing?

Below are the specs of my current laptop.

Check your temps and consider repasting it, its about that age. My old xps was unusable from thermal throttling.

      • Thanks, I just installed HWMonitor and see the following temps:

        Current temp = 70
        Min temp = 62.5
        Max temp = 92.1

92 looks to be pretty high lol. I'll clean it out for dust and have a look at repasting too. Thanks for this.

I had the same laptop but I swapped out the display panel to this https://vi.aliexpress.com/item/1005003527755435.html which was more energy efficient and better brightness. Can't remember what sort of battery life I got but it definitely improved it

      • Great thanks for the link, I might grab one myself if I can fix the powering off issue.

        • It's easy to replace the panel but you do have to be careful. First thing is slowly slide a credit card sized card in between the seams of the LCD frame to open it and go all the way around (careful not to do it too fast so you don't break the clips). This should come off easily. Then you can unscrew the old panel but it should be also held in place with double sided tape at the back (two pieces are intentionally exposed so you can remove it).

This is the part where you have to be careful. Pull the exposed tape slowly but be careful that the screen doesn't come flying forward when the tape is undone because the cable is fragile and clipped in with a kind of lever. Once the panel is disconnected from the frame you can unclip the cable and then remove it. Installing the new panel is just the same thing in reverse and put the double sided tape like before (exposing the ends so you can replace it again in the future). Also when you put the frame back on, be careful not to break the clips (e.g if the monitor wasn't fitted in properly and you force the clips).

Also I would send a message to the supplier when you buy it to say make sure they send the exact model they advertised (and also for E495 you need the brackets which they should supply too). The thing with buying panels is there are many suppliers who just send you a compatible screen if you don't say anything (which may have inferior characteristics like high power draw / poorer brightness/colour). I got a genuine one from this link though

          • @fatpotato123: Thanks so much for this, really appreciate it!

        • The issue you described is usually hardware related, typically ram or motherboard but could also include power delivery . Still I'd start with the fresh windows install incase it's windows being windows.

I'd hold off on the screen, I can't see how that could be the cause.

Lastly the max temp is fine, it's just what laptop CPUs can hit when full throttle, but your idle temperatures are a bit high.

          • @AEKaBeer: I agree. I was only mentioning the screen panel swap in response to the screen being ordinary

          • @AEKaBeer: Thanks for that. I'll start with a windows fresh install, you never know!

            • @cv05: When I clear the dust from the inside fans and keyboard I find those handheld tyre inflators seem to work well (like a substitute for those pressurised air cans people use to clean the inside of their PCs)
Just put the needle head on and blast some air to dislodge the dust and particles
              https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/VJIAAOSw9rRnnKdt/s-l1600.jpg

              • @fatpotato123: Same but I use a big air compressor 😁

I'm going to do this one right now, I've never done this one before. In saying that, I don't think it's the problem. Today it was freezing almost as soon as turning it on. It doesn't feel hot at all. I might do a fresh install of windows tonight too.

          • @AEKaBeer: Looks like your thoughts were right. After a fresh win11 install and a dust blowout it's still freezing randomly requiring a hard power off and then on. It sounds like it's ready for the bin :-(

            • @cv05: One thing you can try is if you have 2 sticks of RAM, remove one of them and test the stability (and again with the other if it still the same). If you verify it's a RAM issue then you can buy 16 GB for about $40 (or 32 GB $84 https://www.amazon.com.au/Corsair-Vengeance-Performance-Unbu…)

It may or may not be worth it but you can try a motherboard swap if that fails
              https://vi.aliexpress.com/item/1005007619001904.html

              • @fatpotato123: Thanks again! A couple of things:

I took the back cover off this time and gave it a blow out, there was a fair bit of dust around the fan etc. Also, there was a small screw floating around inside which I imagine could have been the cause of the issue! I have one stick of 16GB of ram so after I blew out the laptop I swapped it to the other slot. I'll see how it goes. I might order another 16GB of ram just in case this one is faulty and if it's not and the laptop is all good then I've ended up with 32!

                • @cv05: That could also be a sign of SSD failure, even if the smart health returns fine I have seen that happen on dying SSDs

            • @cv05: That's a shame, sorry to hear it.

  • Would this be a good traveling laptop (generally speaking)? Purpose: Light editing in Lightroom, maybe Premiere Pro. A quick search says its 1.7kg so not bad compared to my Legion 5 Pro

    • +1

The display is great for photo/video editing. Battery is on the small side though considering the oled panel.

    • Too big for a travel laptop.

  • how long can battery last?

  • How many monitors can this output to? Could it do two 4K monitors plus the laptop screen?

  • Who are Smart Home Store?

    • some non famous online store?

      • I should asked if they are reputable?

They have 9299 transactions done on eBay with 99.8% positive feedback so I guess yeah?

very old APU, otherwise looks like a quality laptop.
    Zen3 almost 4 years old
    Vega8, almost 7 years old.

    • +1

Zen 3 7730U is actually the sweet spot for 8 core low power Ryzen:

      Zen 3 7730U = 7nm, 15W TDP
      Zen 4 8840U = 4nm, 28W TDP

Zen 4 using twice the power even with the massive node advantage is piss poor and due to AMD raising the minimum clocks by 50% and the power hungry design of the RDNA 3 R780M iGPU

      • +3

Zen 4 using twice the power

These power figures are configurable, manufacturers/users can set them at 15W. From my understanding Zen 4 is roughly 30% faster at the same TDP compared to Zen 3.

Specs say 120hz for the screen on ebay not 60.

Get zenbook for better build quality. Will feel plasticky

  • Any extra m.2?

  • +1

I've been using this since 2022 and it's great - only issue is that it does get a bit hot and the speakers are on the bottom so if you want any decent sound out of it you have to wear headphones or connect speakers.

    • +1

How do you find the batter life for browsing/watching movies? and then say for work/gaming?

  • +1

that's a weak-ass battery for a 1.7kg laptop. I guess if you don't actually plan on taking it around places then it's all good.

  • I start software engineering at uni this year, would this be good for it?
Months after not using it, my Lenovo Yoga S730 with an i7-10510U is blue screening and runs stupidly slow so this could be a good replacement :)
