[NSW] Baccarat Damashiro Emperor Hisa 9 Piece Knife Block $199 in Store @ House (Narellan)

30

House Narellan is having a Stocktake Sale, everything was cheaper in store than their advertised 'Sale' prices online, best to give them a call to check/confirm stock/prices (02) 8014 5144

  • We all know their 'Sale' prices should be their normal RRP so I deem this as a bargain :)

Lowest on OB is $299:

I picked up a few knife blocks for everyday use.

Good knives (at this price), the fake Damascus etching is subjective, and so is the fake Tsuchime (most likely stamped, not hammeded)
knives are made from Japanese Steel 420J2, Hardness is Rockwell 53, on the softer side however better/easier if you like to sharpen on the regular

All are Baccarat Damashiro Emperor sets below, they have others on sale too if you prefer other Baccarat knifes:

$199 Hisa 9pc
20cm Bread, 20cm Chefs, 17cm Santoku, 15cm Chefs, 14cm Santoku, 12.5cm Santoku, 12cm Utility, 9cm Paring

$199 Hikari 7pc or here
20cm Carving, 20cm Chefs, 17cm Cleaver, 14cm Santoku, 12cm Utility, 9cm Paring

$199 Shi
20cm Bread, 20cm Chefs, 17cm Santoku, 14cm Santoku, 12cm Utility, 9cm Paring

$279 Mokuzai 7pc
20cm Bread, 20cm Chefs, 14cm Santoku, 12cm Utility, 9cm Paring, 12.5cm Santoku

$200 Nanashi 6pc
20cm Chefs, 17cm Cleaver, 20cm Carving, 14cm Santoku, 17cm Santoku

$150 Miru or here
20cm Chefs, 12cm Utility, 9cm Paring, 20cm Bread, 17cm Santoku

You can do much better than this for the price. Wusthof, Zwilling, Global. Could get some nice carbon steel japanese knives. pair it with a mercer wide bread knife & cheap victrorinox pairing knife for probably a little less.

I got a global g-16 for $70, mercer wide bread knife $20 and victorinox pairing knife $5

Sorry, I have to to ask - you bought 6 knife blocks?

I've seen these "Damashiro" sets and the RRPs are good for a laugh. I've avoided them because I find them tacky. It's like they tried too hard to make them look authentic Japanese and as a result, they achieved the opposite.

    Japanese Steel 420J2

I'm not an expert, but I've only heard of J2 steel, and besides the hardness, I have nfi if a block is worth $200, even on sale.

    Perhaps @mymilkynipples chime in.

  • Friends have these. Frankly I struggle with them. I suppose if you are diligent with frequent sharpening they could be alright, but why not just buy Kiwi knives?

    LOL

      House is always on sale.

Just type House Locations into Google and every thumbnail has sale signs on them

      Exhibit A

      Exhibit B

It's like EB Games, except it's a knockoff of Victoria's Basement, selling their own brand of knives which belong in landfill

      • Same as Harris scarfs. RRP is some random number generator output

  • These have a “nice” Damascus print on them 🤣
Like the other comments, if you like good knifes wait for a deal on Wusthof or Shun..

  • We recently looked at Baccarat knives. Many are to be avoided, especially the Japanese knives.

However… We found one hidden gem!

It's the Baccarat Iconix 7pc Straub. It's an identical rip off of the Wusthof Icon. Same steel, same sharpness and same knives, same block.
Wusthof markets them as X50CrMoV15 which is also 1.4116 steel.
We have been using them for 2 weeks and they're faultless. A hidden gem amongst many sets of their knives! Wusthof is $1299 with a RRP of $2100 (yeah right) and baccarat is $279.

There would be no real world benefit to paying $1000 more for a set of knives. We did purchase the iconix knife sharpener too which is great for sharpening and honing to keep them super sharp.
I never thought we would ever buy a baccarat set of knives but well, here we are!

    • Where did you buy from and how much?

    • +1

X50CrMoV15 is one of the most common steels found in knives. You can pick up some really cheap knives with it.

      • I have a gf who puts the knives in the dishwasher and opens canned veggies with the tips.. so we needed something which can survive knife abuse haha

They're sharp, sharpen easily, can survive abuse and lifetime warranty so it's a safe purchase.

Are they a hand forged masterpiece? Definitely not..

  • knives are made from Japanese Steel 420J2

420J2 Steel is 420J2 Steel. Doesnt matter if it comes from Japan, Europe, or Africa. Chemical composition is the same.
420J2 is not brilliant, nothing special. Used in "budget knives"

    Just stay away from these.

Only thing "japanese" about these is how similar the name sounds to the word "Damashitoru" which means "To take away by deception".

    Like your money for example…
