[QLD] Brown Onions / Potatoes 5kg $0.99 @ Coles, Toowong

730

I saw this today at Coles Toowong QLD - 5KG bag for 99 cents / 20 cents per kg.
They didn't look old or anything bad.
As a single person I had no need to buy them. I hope it helps someone.
Edit:
Looking forward to any funny comments and feedback, but please be kind as it's my 2nd deal posted.

Updated: 5kg Potatoes also 99c. Thanks RADISHYUEN.

Both have plenty of stock.

Brown Onions reg price $3.90/kg
Potatoes reg price $4.50/kg

Bargain, I’d get them if I lived anywhere near there!

    • They were pretty big onions. What would you make with them?

I guess suitable for fried onion rings?

As I walked past I remembered when I was a kid a bikie showed me how to make an orange pipe gun. So wondered if onions would work the same.

French onion soup, Caramelised onion relish

Other than just diced in general cooking, I use a fair bit of onion making chilli jam. Bigger onions are better, less peeling required.

Onions form the base for a lot of soups and stocks; both are easy to prepare and freeze.

I always put chopped onion in my butter chicken to bulk it up a bit more.

We can’t bust heads like we used to—but we have our ways. One trick is to tell them stories that don’t go anywhere like the time I caught the ferry over to Shelbyville. I needed a new heel for my shoe, so I decided to go to Morganville which is what they called Shelbyville in those days. So, I tied an onion to my belt which was the style at the time. Now, to take the ferry cost a nickel. And in those days, nickels had pictures of bumblebees on ‘em. ‘Give me five bees for a quarter,’ you’d say. Now, where were we? Oh, yeah! The important thing was that I had an onion on my belt which was the style at the time. They didn’t have white onions because of the war. The only thing you could get was those big yellow ones.

Were there any budgie-smugglers on sale-make my trip worthwhile - Tony.

    • Hi Tony. Not that I saw, but if you send me a decent pic I'll look for you next time and it might be worth your while.

      • It wont be a decent pic. Be careful what you ask for.

Worth the 200km round trip, thanks OP

    • Yeah I know it's only a little local deal. Like I said - I hope it helps someone.

I should have also posted when Fresco opened here on Sunday. They had 20% off storewide and all the other stores had 20% off all day to celebrate too.

You never know, maybe I'll find a deal that works for you too.

I don't need onions for the tears laughing about this and my contribution to OZB.

Big batch of French onion soup? 🧅

Bargain. Even “fresh” onions are half black and rotted much of the time.

    • +1

Yeah I don't think describing anything as 'fresh' means anything legally when it comes to food.

      • Also nothing wrong with half black.. I'm sure they still okay

      • ‘Fresh’ by law in NSW when applied to seafood means never frozen.

Oh dear, I'm getting old, clicking on and reading onion deals.

Confirmed this morning. I updated the post. Thanks.

  • Thanks mate, will buy 2moro. Good to add red onions for stir fry, it makes your food delicious, try it.

  • How many onions can you safely eat per day?

  • Seems silly to sell potato at 99c when there is such a big shortage. " Sheds MSM tears "

    • +1

Maybe the shortage is all created artificially to inflate prices

    • +1

Thought the 'shortage' is actually from the flooded fries/chips factory and not actual lack of crops? Frozen chips and hash browns freezers have been empty for months now but there doesn't seem to be lack of potatoes in the fresh produce sections at the local colesworth / aldi / iga.

      • "The prolonged wet weather made it too difficult to manage the crops that were in the ground, made it difficult to harvest early crops, and it meant there were really quite significant delays in getting the new crops planted, particularly in the [NSW] Riverina, and in the Central Highlands here in Victoria, and in Tasmania."

"That's not only impacted the number of spuds that have grown in potato processing regions, but their size."

You are right that it only seems to be a frozen potato shortage.

        • +1

Was just funny for us cos it seemed like maccas and cafes and restaurants are hogging all the hash browns.

  • Will these do as Easter Eggs?
