  • Wow… almost bought the 4080 for $4500. There are also quite a few threads saying that these 40xx cards have driver issues and are crashing a lot. Can this deal be accessed using a primary school email account? Sorry never tried doing education discounts before.

    • +2

It should work but lets be honest no primary school kid will ever need this much computing power and from a laptop.

      • +7

Probably just using it to access the discount.

  • +2

for $4.5k you will expect oled screen

    • +1

Maybe as an option. OLED requires more care to ensure no burn in. The Legion displays are fantastic. High resolution, high refresh rate, bright and excellent colour gamut. Probably makes more sense to keep using IPS as the default.

      • -3

Yep The burn in myth, had one for years, never has any burn in issue

        • +2

LOL, it's not a myth. It's an inherent downside of the technology.
It has been getting better with manufacturer's using mitigation techniques but it's still a concern.
I'm interested in what OLED laptop you have and how long you've been using it.

    • +1

OLED is something a lot of laptop manufacturers don't want to touch sadly, especially on a laptop after MSI had some burn in already: https://www.reddit.com/r/GamingLaptops/comments/11tfl4u/is_t…

It's just a warranty nightmare for them and floods them with RMA's. They've all pretty much migrated to Mini-LED for their high end screens on gaming laptops, which I suppose isn't too bad considering if you have a high enough zone count it's pretty good still on a small screen and it's far brighter. But yeah not as inky blacks sadly.

  • +3

Man. 4.5k. OK next kidney goes

    • The Asus Zephyrus Duo 16 (R9-7945HX RTX4090) is 7k… It is purdy though.

I have the previous generation 3080Ti version, and won't be upgrading unless a very substantial discount comes about.
It's gone up $1.5-2k from the previous generation…

      • I had to laugh at that ebay link when I saw 'Be the first to write a review.' $7000, someone has to be the first, right?

  • +1

I'd love to see it's battery life.

    \j before anyone gets butthurt.

The 13900HX has a max turbo of 157w. It's basically a desktop CPU. You will need for it to be plugged in. Just wait for the AMD Ryzen 7000 series mobile CPUs with an NVIDIA 4090, which provide similar to better performance than Intel 13th gen HX, whilst using up to 40/50% less power. Notebook check did a review of an Asus with a 4090 and the Ryzen version was superior.

      • +1

Yeah, it definitely sounds like a home laptop, wouldn't be able to take it far.

  • +2

Compared to the Omen, for an extra ~$1200

    Better processor i9 v i7
    Faster RAM - 4800 vs 5600
Better screen 375 nits 16:9 vs 500 nits 16:10 WQXGA
    Better build
    Worse keyboard

Also wait on the Omen is currently 4-8 weeks

    • +1

All round, seems to be maybe worth only about $500 more really. I don't think the $1200 is worth it, but then again maybe the Omen's build quality is complete garbage?

      • +1

With the OMEN, we got 11% cash back + 5% late delivery while Lenovo is 9% ( may be not eligible because this is edu portal)
        So sum up: $3390 - $339 - $169.5 = $2881.5 OMEN HP
        Lenovo: $4549- $372.19 = $4176.81
        The difference is $1295.31

The Laptop of my dreams, maybe one day at $3.5k max?

    • +2

The laptop of my dreams is the Razer Blade 18. The $8500 price tag ensures that it will stay just a dream

      • 18" is way too big for me. I'm gonna use an external monitor anyway, especially if I play games. 16" is the max for me. After all, it should also be a portable device. If it's humungous, buying a desktop and getting more performance per buck spent is better.

        • +1

Fair, 18” is massive. If I were to daily commute with it a 16” would be preferable. But for at home, using around the house and the infrequent use taking it out, 18” would be my choice

      • +1

The laptop of my dreams was always either the Razer Blade 14 or the Zephyrus G14. I purchased a G14 2 years ago and I LOVE it. It's such a powerful device in such a small package. As Nefe said, I use an external monitor anyway, so I like the idea of benefitting from the smaller form factor of the 14" laptop and then using the monitor when at home

        • +1

That's the one from CEX, right?
          I remember that

          • +1

@FireRunner: Yup that's the one! You were the user who stopped me from buying a base model spec from Gumtree for $150 more than the CeX one. The laptop internals are still holding up strong, although the build quality of the G14 is terrible. Rubber around the screen is peeling off, laptop is a little creaky too, and I've had many issues I've had to send the laptop in for.

When I sent it in, I received a new battery, speakers, nvme, cooling system (fans + heatpipes) all under warranty. This has given the laptop new life, and I hope to keep it for another 3 years or so.

Ironically, I didn't even realize I replied back to YOU haha.

  • 4090 in this form factor would be severely under tuned?

    • It's not the same 4090 as the desktop graphics card. It uses the 4080 silicon die but is power limited to about 175W so would be around a 4070 Ti in terms of performance.

      • I would imagine noise and heat would be substantial for the form factor as well. Can’t imagine this laptop would last very long. 🥶

        • I have the RTX 3080 legion 7. GPU draws 165W. Temps are usually mid 70s. The 4090 doesn’t use much more. Thought my CPU is a Ryzen 9, the 13th Gen i9 probably draws more power than it

        • +1

These GPUs are designed for laptops. They don't resemble the desktop versions. They'll last fine.

  • But can it run crysis?

    • +1

      yeh on the CPU

  • Can't say this is a good deal given the downgrades going from Gen 7 -> Gen 8.

Actually had a chat with two different lenovo customer sales reps regarding any possible deals on their legion 7 series. The first attempt was trying to get a comparable deal to the previous afterpay Omen deal - the offer (after allegedly consulting their manager) was 4.5k for the 4080 model - which was terrible at the time, given that they were offering a bundled deal with two tab m10's for only $260 more (which could be resold for more than the "bundled" cost - though there might not be a market for them.. lol). Only a day after this chat, they reduced the 4080 variant to the same 4.5k I was offered. Their argument was that given they provided a better CPU (not acknowledging the 4080 vs 4090 price comparison - when they themselves price an 4080->4090 upgrade as being $1300), their price remained fair compared to the Omen 17.

Did another chat just now asking if they could give anything else given the aforementioned downgrades going into Gen 8, and was declined saying that their education portal deal was the best they could offer. At this stage, I think the days where lenovo was the best priced for specs in Australia are dead.

    • Sorry for missing out, but what's the Omen deal we are discussing here?

      • +1

        Likely this: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/763178 (OMEN by HP Gaming Laptop 17-Inch ck2013TX, Core i7-13700HX, 32GB DDR5, RTX 4090, 1TB SSD $3390 Delivered @ HP Store)

        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/763178

It sold out fairly quickly, and there was a moment on the 19th, where they seemed to have restocked 1-2 units (as it went from the wait list button, to allowing me to add to cart), but yea that was it. Unfortunately, I was debating between the ps5 deal or this during the sale, and ended up missing out on both (lol..)

  • How is the Lenovo warranty btw? Compare to Dell?

I am using Alienware for years because of the easy warranty process.

    • Pretty non-existent in metro Sydney. I have a 2020 legion 7 and after upgrading my RAM and NVME to a evo plus 970 I found that it was only running at half the advertised speed. Tried their phone support which is less than helpful, and you can’t really walk into the service centre to speak to someone in Sydney (at silverwater) because they have to deem that your issue or question is worthy of a ticket. The laptop’s out of warranty now and the laptop perpetually gets BSOD due to rtx 2070 nvidia drivers so I spend weeks reinstalling windows and trying different drivers with only friends to turn to for help. First of three Lenovo gaming laptops to have given me so many problems though which is disappointing.
