Wow, a 4090 on its own almost costs that much

    • +8

A desktop 4090 performs about 60% better. So compare it to a desktop 3080-ish I guess.

    • +1

Not to downplay the value of this deal, but a mobile RTX 4090 is equivalent to a desktop RTX 4080 in cost.

  • -7

    Use or aud

    • +2

What does this mean and if it is what I think it is:”usd or aud”, what do you think it is? Honestly? Did you click the link and look? Or did you make more effort to actually just ask?

      • -8

        I looked already.

        • +2

Price is unbelievable for 4090. Which is 3000 by itself.

          • +3

@ilove: This is a laptop 4090 which runs the same AD103 die as the desktop 4080, and runs around the performance of a desktop 4070 Ti due to power limits.

  • +11

With cash reward 11%, this is a good price. Tracked $339.00 cash back for me. Total spend $3390 - $339 = $3051

    • Man people got money to burn. What inflation?

  • +1

Juicy deal with 11% cashback via Cashrewards

  • +1

I bought this on the Edu deal a few days ago for 3.6k :(

    • +1

How's the battery life and the thermals?…not many reviews online on this particular model and spec.

    • can you share invoice i can get them to price match please???

  • -1

Totally worth it for the GPU alone

Time to take some super out…

    • +1

Thanks, RBA will do an extra 25bps hike because of you guys :)

  • +2

There specs make me a little aroused.

  • Unbelievably good deal. Purchased.

All other laptops with a 4090 (yes, I'm aware desktop and laptop are different) are in the realms of 7-9k.

Not much info on this though online though. Not even sure if there's a second m2 slot.

    • +1

Its just the same omen 17 for the last 3 years or so with updated specs. 2 sodimm slots and 2 ram slots.

Saw some chinese review on the 4080 variant, holds up well thermal wise despite the old cooling solution.

      • Assuming you mean 2 m2 slots and 2 sodimm?

        • +1

brain freeze sorry, but yes, 2 m.2 slots (and a copper heatsink on both, nice gesture from HP) and 2 ram slots. pretty standard stuff on most gaming laptops

          • +1

@Brrrrt: Awesome. To be honest that's what I assumed, but it's always nicer to have it written down somewhere by the manufacturer.

            • +1

@Ezuku: yeah, ive been saying this for a while now, but HP and Acer really needed to step up their game with regards to their website design and having detailed spec sheets because they are about the least transparent out of all brands.

      • Thanks to TSMC. Samsung sucks at this.

        • yeah, samsung 8nm is a scam

          • @Brrrrt: Not only 8nm, also look at Snapdragon 8.

    • +1
    • can you share invoice i can get them to price match please???

      • Unfortunately I can't, as it hasn't been shipped I have no invoice. I'd suggest trying your luck with hp sales though, but I'm sure they know that price they've been selling it at.

  • TGP?

    • The full 175w mate

      • Damn cheap for a full fat 4090. I had my heart set on an MSI GT77 or ASUS Zephyrus DUO but I'm not ready to buy yet.

        • Yeah ive placed my order because its this cheap. GT77 is too expensive for us here and while I like duo I think i will wait for the 2024 refresh since the 2023 one doesnt get any updated cooling compared to last year and im hearing that it struggles to pull the full 175w even under manual mode and everything.

  • +2

Shut up and take my kidney.

  • A laptop 4090 @ 150watts or whatever it is. Might as well just get a 1060 laptop!

    • 175w 4090 with 4080 desktop die, still worth it because its around 4070ti performance with extra vram. considering cpu is about a 12700K level of performance, combine the two and two, look up pricing on these desktop parts and to build a full rig by yourself, this is still a good deal price to performance wise.

      • +1

I guess so, it's the cost of convenience. Just having the 4090 in the title and dropping down a few tiers in performance just grates me haha

  • +14

Late to the party but not that late. some notes for folks who are still on the fence - you are not going to get better deals than this, period. Even against desktop machine its not too bad price to performance wise:

You are looking at a 12700K & 4070ti (with extra vram and higher bandwidth means you should see better performance on 4k external monitor even if qhd and 1080p performance are similar) levels of performance, now add in a PSU, a SSD (hp did not specific which one but its gen 4 TLC), a case, and a 1440p240hz monitor, yeah you are fast approaching the 3k mark already.

The biggest issue that folks might have is that for a 2023 gaming laptop this is still staying on the 16:9 screen with the old chasis that HP have reused for a while now. But make no mistake, the cooling is still good, I did shame lower end MSI laptops when they have few heatpipes and with 3 exhausts only. But the Omen 17' have them simply that much larger in size -thick heatpipes, decent heatsink surface area even if theres only 3 of them not to mention fans pushes a lot of air while not being louder than competitors, making the machine plenty to cool the components inside.

With that said, one issue that have existed and still exists with all HP gaming laptops is the screen wobble, but I say thats not to much of a concern since the hinge is still a-ok - it wobbles but wont fail a year or two down the line. The screen is not great, but for 3k you cant complain much and at the end of the day its QHD240hz.

Now lets touch a bit on the specs, the 13700HX is one of the new HX chip that isnt actually using the new architecture, its actually just a refreshed i9-12950HX while the i5-13650HX is using the new architecture. Anyways, still decent performance, cracks 22k in r23 and omen gaming hub enables undervolting out of box. Just dont expect it to get anywhere close to the the 35k+ r23 that the i9-13900/50/80HX chips can do.

With the gpu, its the 4090 mobile, commenters above me already noted on nvidia pulling another scam and using 4080 die, but i mean what can you do? AMD isnt being any competitive in the laptop gpu space - the top end AMD gpu is still the 6850m XT which is just the laptop 6750XT die, so fairly large performance gap there. 175w full wattage model on this one, so again good stuffs here.

Ram is the good old 4800mhz from last gen, 32gb so for like what 95% of folks no upgrade is needed, and while its true that theres faster 5600mhz ones avalible on other brands laptops, this is still decent esp since the IMC is updated leading to a decent improvement in latency. And again, you cant really complain much given the price.

Screen is well, 16:9, but again, taking the price into consideration, still good specs with QHD and 240hz, HP claimed 300nits but this thing can do 350+, colour coverage is your standard 100% srgb but due to calibration and all that probably hovering between 95%~99% much like everyone else.

Lastly theres the exterior stuff, per key rgb and im pretty sure you get opto mechanical keys here. Only problem (and again, common complaint from before as well but this is a reused chasis) being the lack of numpad for a 17' and inconvinent power button placement. Webcam is trash and no windows hello but it is there at least for those that needed it.

Oh and battery is 87wh. so dont expect any or much battery life combined with the intel chip. probably like an hour max is a realistic usage time off wall power.

    • -8

You dont get out much hey.

      • +8

yeah well I really want to sell it to the folks here because I can say with no hesitation that this is the deal of the century for folks with the budget. Basically never before a high end gaming laptop this close to desktops price to performance wise. It’s literally less than half the price compared to most gaming laptops with 4090mobile and you only lose out of the lessor important stuff - an old chasis and 16:9 instead of 16:10 is not a big issue and neither is the lessor tiered cpu.

    • +1

Bro just do a review on this god damn laptop.
      I'll buy 2 thanks though!

      • I will do one when I get my hands on it :)

    • OzB are lucky to have you around haha

    • Reckon it's better than the nuc x15 deal i posted last year? xd (bought this one to replace that one now)

      • Thats some of the best budget deals, and this is the best if you have 3 grand haha. They are not mutually exclusive

        • I need to stop finding deals for the sanity of my wallet, this one is so crazy haha, the price is equivalent to the US price but in AUD!

          • @Kazusa: XD this price is super good, you cant find a 4090 for 2k usd even in the us

    • can you share invoice i can get them to price match please???

    • I'm late, but how do you know a 13th gen chip is on the old or new architecture? On Intel Ark both the 13700HX here and the 13980HX are listed as Raptor Lake.

      • +1

        unless im mistaken, the 13600hx, 13650hx, 13850hx, 13900hx, 13950hx and 13980hx

the other ones should be refreshed 12th gen

  • Wowser wtf is this? How is this shit so cheap.

    • +1

Consider the folliowing: gaming laptops should never have been that expensive, not when 4090 mobile is using 4080 desktop die.

Anyways, HP did cut corners here, but not on the important parts:

      • the chasis is reused for quite a few years now

      • the cpu - i7-13700HX, is just a refreshed i9-12950HX and not on the new architecture, the lessor tiered i5-13650HX is on the new architecture however, weird stuff i know

      • as the chasis is reused, there is a large screen bezel as its 16:9 unlike other high end rigs at 16:10

      • webcam is trash and no windows hello or other biometrics

      • Excellent info you have provided thank you.
I don't care if the chasis is old if it's good.
As long as the cpu is a good pair with the gpu no probs, shame about deceitful naming practices by intel though.
I don't care about the bezel, also I am one of many who don't need more than FHD on a laptop.
Shame about the webcam, as this laptop would be a desktop replacement for many, so WFH types would need a good webcam. But $100 buys an awesome clip on job I guess.
Anything windows biometrics will just end up stealing data, so am no sad it isn't here.
Awesome deal, too bad it ended so quickly, probably was just a marketing stunt with very little stock.

        • +2

How is it a marketing stunt it lasted for hours. By the sound of it many people were able to buy.

  • Oh weird it is 12th gen intel in reality

    • well yes its a refreshed 12th gen, but based on the top end 12950HX which is still pretty good and certainly wont be bottlenecking the mobile 4090 here.

      • I thought 13th gen was a big leap in terms of performance and efficiency

        • if you trust intels marketing that is.

battery life is still awful, and performance gains arent as large as they seem, especially if its the -H series. The 13900/50/80HX offer pheonomenal performance increase compared to the 12950HX (or well, the 13700HX here) but the rest of the lineup is just so and so, your average generational improvements.

          • @Brrrrt: Right , good to know. It's so confusing- AMD is doing this too, new gen product names but it's just the old tech rehashed

  • Is this a price error?

    • you arent a true ozbargainer if you dont jump in every price error deals in the hopes it wont get cancelled /s

I dont think so. Its 30% off so not exactly a crazy sale. If they really do cancel it, have a friend who have access to edu email and chat with their CS. the 3.6k price on EDU is still good even though its out of stock but you can request to have the price reserved.

source: i did that yesterday but didnt place the order.

      • +1

Pulled my trigger. Was waiting for a $2.5k desktop deal from BPC with similar performance but that does not seem to be happening anytime soon as they are overloaded with extremely long waiting time.

This will be a wonderful replacement for my 6 yo OMEN 17" 1070, which is struggling with dead battery, dead screen and keyboard like a hotplate in gaming…

        • nice, i personally think this is better because prebuilts often skimp out a bit on the cpu side of things and a lessor psu means a laptop with comparable performance saves you a lot on electricity deals over the years. of course desktop have that upgradability down the line.

    • +1

Nope. I've been keeping an eye on this and was actually planning on pulling the trigger at the rrp of 4.8k. I've been messaging sales about this.

Needless to say I've jumped at this price of 3k (when considering cashback).

  • wow

  • +1

Can someone explain to me, How to add this item to my cart?
There is no option to add it to my cart When I search for it?
    Thanks.

    • +1

hi mate, just use the hp website and search for the machine, dont click on it, remain on the search page and there should be the add to cart button, its still showing for me, switch a browser if you cant access it somehow

  • This is crazy!

Just purchased a Legion 5i Pro 3070ti for around $2300 after CB literally the day before.

I know the build quality will trump the omen, but knowing that $3000 gets you a full bodied 4090 mobile GPU is slightly killing me right now.

    • yeah apart from the screen wobble, the omen 17 is actually pretty solid all things considered and thermals a pretty nice

  • Fk it. I pulled the trigger! I didnt buy last deal because it was on edu store so i was afraid cash back wouldn't be eligible.
But this time it even cheaper with 11% cashback!

    • can you share invoice i can get them to price match please???

  • +1

    Bought, thanks.
    Upgrading from MSI GT73VR 17.3" i7 1TB+512GB 32GB GTX 1080 8GB Gaming Laptop bought 2016.

  • In the market for a light weight laptop with a long lasting battery life, but looking at this is doing things to me lol. I dont need it. I dont need it. I dont need it. Please go oos till tomorrow morning.

  • +1

Looks like its gone from search now…

    Nebula: What will you do?
    Me: Wait.

    • +1

Thank god. I didn't want to be lugging that thing around but it was a deal.

    • It is still in my cart…and I've been able to add an extra $50 discount. So, it would be almost exactly $3000 with the cashback. Oh my… I'm already seeing some Sleeve Cases to buy for it. I'll prob pull the trigger, this is a laptop to have for several years ahead with no problems performance-wise.

      • +2

If $50 sign up discount code used, cash back may be invalid.

        • Hmmm, that's good to know. Thanks for the heads up

        • This. I purposely did not use the code. Not worth risk losing $300 cashback over $50 promo code.

  • 4090 only in name lol, how did they fit a gigantic 4090 in this haha

  • I got the 3080 version of this a year or so ago for 2.5k. It's an excellent chassis for the price. This is great value for money at these specs.

  • +1

Anyone can share with us, How bad the screen wobble is? If you are on a plane does it shake a lot? Is it more noticeable than other laptops?

    • theres some reviews out there, the screen wobble much like all other omens is present and very noticable

  • How many did they actually have available, was this just another marketing stunt?

    • I bought one…and judging by responses in this thread many others did too. Don't think it's a marketing stunt. It's not even widely advertised.

    • Hi mate, if you can get hold of an .edu account. It is worth while to ask the CS to reserve a price for you with the 3.6k educational store price since that sale isnt supposed to end until the 31st.

I actually tried that before and the CS said she can hold the price until June but luckily didnt end up paying so i jumped on this deal instead, with that said 3.6k is still amazing for the specs you are getting, just not as amazing.

  • Can you charge the laptop via thunderbolt port?

    • I believe it does, It has thunderbolt 4.
