For those paying in USD this is how you get the correct exchange rate in PayPal:

Setting overseas websites to AUD or letting PayPal do the currency conversion results in an inflated rate. To get the correct rate you need a card without international fees and do the following:

  • Set the website currency to USD
  • Checkout with PayPal
  • Select your card with no international fees
  • Click "See currency options"
  • Select USD to bill the card in USD instead of AUD
  • Proceed with checkout

Now you'll get the correct MasterCard or VISA exchange rate depending on the card.

  • Any chance that you can negotiate a dual intel nic minipc deal for pfsense/opnsense under $200?

    • Any model in particular? I can see what I can do.

      • Anything good under $200 :-) preferably in $175 range

    • You missed the n150 gmktec.

      • yes that one was great. I'm using mine right now. But its wifi sucks. It sometimes just wont connect to my AP. Lucky i have a usb wifi that works

    • You can add a second Intel NIC to just about anything with an M.2 slot - example https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005005575635263.html - the Ethernet connector fits perfectly into a Serial or VGA cutout.

I grabbed one the last time it came up and did a review on it …
    https://goughlui.com/2024/12/22/review-soyo-mini-pc-m2-plus2…

Overall, it's been decent for light server tasks and single-tasking - mine's still running well, but I wouldn't want to use it as a work machine or multi-tasking as it is somewhat slow …

    • +1

Yup the low power Intel's are great for Plex, Docker, emulation and the other light stuff. If you're wanting to do multitasking and all that high workload stuff get the Ryzen mini PCs ;)

    • +3

That's an extremely thorough review, thank you.

I wouldn't want to use it as a work machine or multi-tasking as it is somewhat slow

That's exactly my experience as well, but be careful saying that around these parts, you get downvoted for that. N100/N97 mini PCs are brilliant homelab/Home Assistant machines though.

    • Yeah. I use it as a desktop but vscode is very slow on it. I wish i had spent a bit more and got an AMD variant.

    • The more paranoid would probably wipe the pre-existing install and start from known good media. But the truly paranoid would have to avoid Chinese hardware altogether, just in case there’s a persistent UEFI bootkit.

I'm glad I went with an HP ProDesk Mini instead of a Chinese machine, the sound of that worries me to no end.

Has there been any incidents of Chinese manufacturers embedding these "UEFI bootkits"? How exactly do they work?

  • Hey OP, any chance of negotiating the GMKTec K8 plus too..?

    • Which CPU?

      • the k8+ comes with 8845hs

        • Ali sellers put bundles with the other CPU options just to make it so much harder.

Hey Clear any chance of negotiating a deal on eggs? 🐓🥚 🍳

    • +3

Searching "egg" on AliExpress gives me some questionable results the further I go :O

  • How does it go for web browsing and moonlight streaming?

  • hmmm doesnt have USB C PD like the GMKtec ones

  • I am planning to use one as a NAS, using those USB connected DAS enclosures. Any recommendations for the mini PC? This one has USB 3.1 so apparently slow?

  • I'm wanting to get a Plex "server" as I've never had one. Likely only streaming 1 (maybe 2) users at a time (at this stage - happy to upgrade after proof of concept). Got HA running on a Pi4. I'm not looking for an ultimate setup, more-so something cheap to start with to get partner approval for the concept (that I can repurpose when upgrade to a proper NAS/media server).

For $150-ish after cash back why shouldn't I buy this? Talk me out of it…

(and keen to hear any recommendations I can sit on, as in no rush to get this going)

    • I'm running the same CPU (with faster ram) for my home lab and it holds up well running a bunch of containers, transcoding to multiple users at a time, using it as a NAS etc.

Main thing here you're missing is storage capabilities, depending on how much media you plan to store and at what resolution it'll fill up quick, plus the fact you'll not be running anything with parity (if it's just media you can replace may not even care about this).

But as a proof of concept it'll work for sure and would be fun to tinker with, and you'll easily find a way to repurpose this.
