For those who have not noticed, The Good Guys was added as a participating retailer to the TCN HIM and TCN GIFT gift cards late last week.

    • @WookieMonster which would you prefer between TCN and Ultimate gift cards?

Why I ask is coz I recently negotiated a deal with JB chat and he said TCN cards can't be used online. Instead I paid via Ultimate card and found it quite easy and smooth, it worked as Visa card (on confirmation screen it showed that I paid via Visa).

Any particular comparison points between them?

      • +12

Considering you are asking about JB Hi-Fi, my answer will be skewed towards JB Hi-Fi. I will also assume you are only referring to the Visa version of Ultimate gift cards, not the weird EFTPOS version you may still find being sold at a retailer.

        • TCN is great in that you can exchange part or all of the balance of a TCN gift card for a digital JB Hi-Fi gift card, and the exchange process usually only takes a few minutes. Meanwhile, Ultimate originally allowed you to exchange an Ultimate gift card for a digital JB Hi-Fi gift card through the Ultimate website, but that disappeared not long before Black Friday 2021 and has never been possible since.

        • Ultimate is better if you want to purchase a single gift card in a large denomination (e.g. some physical Ultimate gift cards can be loaded with up to $500 per gift card, and some digital Ultimate gift cards can be loaded with up to $1,000 per gift card). Digital TCN gift cards can be loaded with up to $500 per gift card, whereas the physical TCN gift cards usually max out at $100. That is how you end up with someone redeeming 81 gift cards in one transaction at JB Hi-Fi… and I would prefer to only redeem a small number of gift cards in one transaction, because I do not want to drive staff or other customers insane by effectively tying up a checkout and a staff member for a few minutes.

        • I like the flexibility of being able to spend an Ultimate gift card (physical or digital) instore or online (depending on what the participating retailer allows, of course). Physical TCN gift cards can be a pain to deal with, especially if the participating retailer’s digital gift card only allows you to redeem one or two of their own digital gift cards in an online transaction.

        • I really like the ability to add an Ultimate gift card (physical or digital) to a mobile wallet. It makes it faster to redeem a gift card at a participating retailer (and more stealthy if you do not want staff to know you are using a gift card as a payment method). Meanwhile, I think TCN only supports Apple Pay and Google Wallet for their digital TCN gift cards, and there is no way to add a physical TCN gift card to a mobile wallet (at least for the TCN gift cards redeemable at JB Hi-Fi).

        • Both TCN and Ultimate have quietly removed participating retailers and/or redemption methods in the past, so they are both kinda shady in that respect. For example, TCN quietly removes the ability to exchange a TCN gift card for a digital JB Hi-Fi gift card in every year in the lead-up to Black Friday (and without warning too), and it is not back until early December. Tough luck if you live somewhere over 100km from the nearest JB Hi-Fi store! In another example, Blackhawk Network suddenly removed JB Hi-Fi from Ultimate Thanks gift cards not long after a 15% off sale for Ultimate Thanks gift cards went live. The story was that JB Hi-Fi was accidentally added to Ultimate Thanks gift cards late last year…

Considering I can easily get to a JB Hi-Fi store, I think I prefer the Ultimate gift cards.

        Btw…

he said TCN cards can't be used online.

        That is only somewhat true.

        • Physical TCN gift cards cannot be directly redeemed at any online store, but you can go to the TCN website and see if you can exchange part or the full balance of a TCN gift card for a digital gift card from a participating retailer of your choice. That means that you would then be tied to the terms and conditions of the digital gift card you opt for. For example, JB Hi-Fi lets you use an unlimited number of JB Hi-Fi gift cards in one online transaction, but The Good Guys only lets you use a maximum of two The Good Guys gift cards in one online transaction.

        • Digital TCN gift cards should be okay to directly redeem on the JB Hi-Fi website (as long as the gift card lists JB Hi-Fi as a participating retailer), as digital TCN gift cards operate on the Mastercard network. That means you could redeem it just like an Ultimate gift card (at least the Visa version) on the JB Hi-Fi website.

        • Hi WookieMonster, can we exchange TCN HIM to JB GC online?
Doesn't like TCN HER GC, when I click How to use HIM GC, it just say "Enter your card number to see how to use your gift card at our participating retailers"

          • +1

@Phong7: Yes, you should be able to that right now, because when you scroll down to the Participating Retailers section of the TCN HIM gift card page and click/tap on the JB Hi-Fi logo, there should be a banner to the left (at least on the desktop website) where it says JB Hi-Fi Instore & Online.1 I will not guarantee this will still be possible later this week, because the Online option (or even JB Hi-Fi) can be removed at any time without notice…

You were on the correct page, but you need a TCN Him gift card number (which is on the back of the physical TCN Him gift card above the long activation barcode) to start the exchange process. Once you enter the gift card number into the box and click/tap Continue, you should see a dropdown list where you can choose JB Hi-Fi. After that:

            • Click/tap on the Online button to the right of the box or dropdown list
            • Click/tap on Proceed
            • Follow the subsequent steps to have the digital gift card emailed to you.

            1. Online actually refers to the process of going through the TCN website to exchange your TCN gift card's balance for a digital gift card from a participating retailer.

            • +1

@WookieMonster: Thank you WookieMonster, got it now.
For who wonder, I can say we can exchange TCN HIM for TGG GC as well (as in Participating Retailers, TGG says Instore & Online.)

basically 10% discount on NETFLIX but does it work for $20 or only on $50 netflix gift card?

    • T&Cs mentions all denominations.

    • Netflix is cheaper here (if you can get it setup). https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/753750

      • +1

i tried a lot using that method but no success… spend almost one day on weekend…. ! not worth it… !!!

  • +1

Sorry if I'm missing it, but which one is Stan compatible with? Can't seem to see it

    • Stan has their own gift cards which aren't pictured here. They don't always show images of every included gift card.

      • Ohhh OK how do we know its included?!? I checked the Catalogue and no mention of Stan

        • +2

See the text under the other gift card images. The in-store promotional signage will likely also show Stan but not all stores put the posters up.

          • +1

@VantageXL: Thx mate! Not sure how I missed it the first time but cheers :)

  • Does anyone know if Uber includes Uber eats?

    • +1

Both Uber and Uber Eats Logo are visible on the Gift Card.

    • +1

      Yes, the balances are shared.

    • i know, the answer is yes.

also the uber eats logo is on the card as well.

  • So this is basically 10% on points?

  • It’s been 5 months since they honoured the points
    Multiple calls, no results.
    Not bothering

    • Don’t the points show up on screen as soon as you scan it on the self check outs? I thought it used to.

      • It did recognise, however a week later it said not applicable. Basically the points were denied

        • What the… that I haven’t heard of.

So basically you got the points on the system and later removed:s

      • There was a period when it will come through a week or so after the purchase.

  • I assume the 10% back in rewards points is less value than 10% off cash?

I've currently got my everyday rewards as QF points so I don't lose my QF point balance

Time to go down the rabbit hole…

With a 10% discount, you don’t have to spend the savings in order to enjoy the benefit. For example, if you purchase a $100 TCN Him gift card at a 10% discount, you don’t have to spend the $10 you saved to say you got the benefit.

With a 10% bonus given back to you in the form of Everyday Rewards Dollars, you will not realise the benefit of the extra Everyday Rewards Dollars until you actually redeem it on a future shop at a participating business. If you were already going to purchase fuel at EG Ampol (on mainland Australia) or purchase your next round of groceries at Woolworths, it is probably not that big of a deal. However, if you don’t usually shop at any of the participating retailers, then it can become a bit of a hassle. Then there is the ongoing issue of Everyday Rewards Dollars being fraudulently redeemed from a number of people’s accounts, so someone else could enjoy your Everyday Rewards Dollars before you get around to redeeming it, but I digress…

You will see arguments on this site as to whether 10% back in the form of Everyday Rewards points can even be considered equivalent to a 10% discount, because if you usually use a discounted WISH gift card as a payment method at Woolworths (for example), but you end up using a credit card to purchase the TCN gift card and then redeem the Everyday Rewards Dollars in lieu of the discounted WISH gift card, you could argue you not really getting 10% back. Additionally, because of the requirement to actually spend the Everyday Rewards Dollars to enjoy the benefit, the way you calculate the “discount” could be different. For example:

      • If you purchase a $100 TCN gift card at a 10% discount, you only need to spend the $100 TCN gift card to realise the full benefit of the deal, yet you only paid $90, which means the percentage discount is 10%.

      • If you purchase a $100 TCN gift card and get a bonus $10 in Everyday Rewards Dollars, you have to spend both the $100 TCN gift card and the $10 in Everyday Rewards Dollars to realise the benefit, which means you $110 worth of value from your $100 spend, which means the percentage discount could actually end up being 9.09%.

Does this comment actually help address your question? Lol

  • Just checking before I buy, will jbhifi or the good guys let me use 8 giftcards in one transaction? I have my eye on a coffee maker for 799 in both stores.

    • +5

You have not specified whether you are planning on purchasing instore or online, so I will cover both…

      JB Hi-Fi

      • Instore: yes, as long as you tell staff you would like to do split payments across multiple cards1 and tell them the correct balance on each card, plus it assumes staff are happy to do split payments (which they should be). The OzBargain record for TCN / Ultimate gift card redemptions at JB Hi-Fi is 81.

      • Online: yes, but not directly. You cannot redeem the TCN gift cards in this deal on the JB Hi-Fi online store, because these TCN gift cards are EFTPOS gift cards (and EFTPOS cannot handle online transactions). The workaround is to go to the TCN website, go to the webpage for the TCN gift card you have and follow the steps to exchange it for a digital JB Hi-Fi gift card that can be emailed to you. If you do not know how to do this, have a look at these instructions. You can redeem an unlimited number of JB Hi-Fi gift cards on the JB Hi-Fi online store, which is good news for your situation, considering TCN Her/Him gift cards are only available at Woolworths in $50 and $100 denominations, and TCN Teen gift cards are only available at Woolworths in $30 and $50 denominations.

      • Online via JB Commercial / JB Business / JB Education: no. These special types of JB Hi-Fi online stores do not accept JB Hi-Fi gift cards as a payment method, plus I think there is no way you can generate a quote from one of these stores and then pay for it instore at JB Hi-Fi.

      The Good Guys

      • Instore: yes, as long as you tell staff you would like to do split payments across multiple cards and tell them the correct balance on each card, plus it assumes staff are happy to do split payments (which they should be). The OzBargain record for TCN / Ultimate gift card redemptions at The Good Guys is 54.

      • Online: no. You cannot redeem the TCN gift cards in this deal on the The Good Guys online store, because these TCN gift cards are EFTPOS gift cards (and EFTPOS cannot handle online transactions). Although you could go to the TCN website and exchange TCN Him gift cards for The Good Guys, this is a bad idea for your situation, because you can only redeem two The Good Guys gift cards in one The Good Guys online transaction, but you would end up with at least eight The Good Guys gift cards if you purchased 8x $100 TCN Him gift cards and exchanged all of them for The Good Guys gift cards. There is no way you can exchange multiple TCN gift cards into one The Good Guys gift card, and you cannot ask The Good Guys to consolidate multiple The Good Guys gift cards into one. You could go to a The Good Guys store and ask to purchase 1x $500 and 1x $300 The Good Guys gift cards using 8x TCN Him gift cards to get around this, but then that kinda defeats the purpose, as you are already at the store…

      • Online via The Good Guys Commercial: maybe. You cannot redeem any The Good Guys gift cards on the The Good Guys Commercial website, but you can apparently generate a quote and opt to pay for the item instore. The instore payment advice I gave above would then apply.

      1. Please do not mention to the staff member that you have gift cards to redeem, as you will likely confuse them and have them think you have multiple JB Hi-Fi gift cards you want to redeem. TCN gift cards are redeemed like any other EFTPOS gift card, but JB Hi-Fi gift cards are redeemed in a very different manner. It would be better to say TCN gift cards or EFTPOS cards (especially if the staff member does not realise that TCN gift cards are really just EFTPOS cards).

thanks so much for your help!!

Another FYI for anyone interested, Dymocks was added to the TCN Him gift card late last night.

Okay, probably not the most popular retailer ever on OzBargain, but yay for more retailers?

  • Thank you! Great stuff. Saving $$$
Only problem: make sure you don’t meet a karen and refuses you gift cards for no reason!

  • Why cant I find this deal anymore
