    How secure is this?

    • Depends on how you want to integrate it. If you're going to do the standard install without Home Assistant, then make sure your home wifi has a password and have a secure password for your meross account.

    • -3

not very - iot services get hacked all the time and all the devices get turned into botnet zombies. if you want security get an esp32 relay for the opener, and a zigbee door open sensor paired with zigbee2mqtt, build your smart home around homeassistant and access externally with tailscale. no one will get in ;0

        WUT

      • +14

Great tech but your door is plywood and can be kicked in by a 12 yo.

        • +1

true, but not as worried about physical security as a 12yo would have a lot of issues carrying my server rack more than a few steps 😂

          • +6

@Leho: Post pictures of your rack bb.

            • @daitro: Nah it's nothing special just a 9ru with a 3u custom server, few Mac minis and raspberry pi's, and a few switches 😂

          • +5

@Leho: I love how that's the #1 thing you're worried about someone stealing if they break into your house lmao

      • +4

The get "hacked", often because people simply don't change the default name and password.

    • +2

How secure is your door to brute force?

      • +2

More secure than a glass window

    • Lot more secure than your remote, geeze do all that none encrypted remote really has something call security?

      • Garage door remotes generally use a rolling code system where it's non-trivial to guess what the next codes are. There are effective attacks involving recording codes while jamming the opener from receiving them, but it's going to be a bit more involved, targeted, and risky than breaking into home-grade wifi at your leisure and just telling it to open the door.

    • +2

Meross stuff is only as secure as your wifi network, and the pairing process broadcasts your wifi network name and password in clear text over an unencrypted wifi channel.

I'm happy enough to use their stuff for low-stakes things like smart plug/energy monitors, but not for access to my house.

      • +1

Using guest network is a great newbie friendly way to secure against this. E.g for the Deco in router mode, you can have a 2.4Ghz only guest network that's completely isolated from the main network and has a different password. That way if someone gets the password, they still don't have access to your main network. The IoT devices also can't be used to sniff traffic on your main network if hacked. And finally, it's 2.4Ghz only as some smart devices struggle with dual band. But it still allows you to leave your main network dual band.

        • True, that's how I have my stuff set up, but then my garage door opener isn't something I'd want on the less secure network.

      • What would be choice for controlling access to your house if Meross is not secure enought?

        • I haven't come across anything I'd trust, but then my default with IoT stuff is to assume it's insecure unless proven otherwise (the S in IoT stands for security). I also haven't been actively looking though - I was put off back when the 'stand near a window and loudly say "OK Google, open the garage"' vulnerability was publicised.

I use plenty of IoT stuff, but nothing where I'd be massively upset if I discovered someone else had accessed it.

    • We have a remootio on our gate for the past 3 years and never had an issue with security.

It might be an option for those considering different devices - remootio has a good app and provides the geofencing.

We use it for the cleaner on certain days and hours they can open the gate and I get a notification. The key sharing is pretty cool, but we don't need it.

With the sensor I can also get notified when the gate hasn't been shut after a set period - this is not always immediate with whatever platform they are doing push notifications on.

      • We have a remootio on our gate

What gate motor are you pairing remootio with?

I have decided to go with a low voltage BFT motor for our front sliding gate. It would be great to have remootio working with it.

Damn. Now I just need a deal on a triple garage

    • +1

or share with your neighbours :)

  • What's the point of this? (Apart from obvious that you can check over the internet that it is closed).

Can you set it up so that it opens and closes garage automatically for you once you approach or leave (which will save you from pressing the button of regular remote)?

    • +1

Can you set it up so that it opens and closes garage automatically for you once you approach or leave (which will save you from pressing the button of regular remote)?

Yes I've heard of others having it setup like this. I don't own one myself.

    • +5

I've seen someone set up a system where they have a little wifi type dongle in their car that turns on with their car. When the dongle connects to their smart home's wifi, the garage door automatically opens, and when it disconnects (like once they drive off), it closes again. The same happens in reverse when they get home - when the dongle connects as they're driving home it opens the door for them, and when they park in the garage and turn the car off, it closes the door. Obviously it takes a bit of setting up to get that all going properly, but it was the coolest garage door automation I've heard of so far!

      • +2

And just imagine all the seconds you will save per year in pressing the garage door button!

        • +2

I think most of automation and routines is hobby as much as anything for most, which is cool in of itself. I've dabbled, but personally i don't feel the benefit. I'm not that time poor that it makes my life better, or it solves an actual problem. And i loathe having to fix things that go skewy. I do have a few things setup but super basic. I came to the conclusion sometime ago that Im perfectly happy pressing the odd button, turning a key etc. Its fun hearing about some of the things people get up to though.

      • I use in similar fashion but using GoGoGate instead of Meross

One of the major difference is gogogate also has a sensor to check whether my garage door is currently in open position (by sticking the sensor on the door itself)

What I have done is to add a “flic button” in my car that connected to my phone via Bluetooth, then pressing the button few minutes before I reach home so the door is already open when I arrive, this save me time to wait the door to be opened

        • One of the major difference is gogogate also has a sensor to check whether my garage door is currently in open position

The Meross units have this sensor as well, and will warn using the app (via push notification) if the door has been left open for longer than a set time.

    • No because there's security issue. What you can do is setup with google home or apple homekit and then use voice control to open the garage as you're approaching home.

I'm using this with samsung smart things, I have it linked to my watch so I can open it with my watch when I'm close to home. I'm not a fan of using voice haha Find it much more convenient than a remote, no need for battery replacement and also warns you when you open the garage for too long (eg forgot to close garage etc)

    • @Musiclover absolutely 100% you can with HomeAssistant or the like, not natively by itself with the Meross app though.

Obviously you want to make sure you do this in a way that doesn’t give out false positives & probably worth having a notification to your devices when it’s opened/closed just in case. But yes, totally possible - I’d set mine up this way previously, but turned it off when my wife’s phone started giving a tonne of wrong locations & opening it seemingly randomly.

    • +1

Two things I like it about (at least):
      - Whenever the door is open or closed, or stay open for too long (doesn't matter its through the opener or the original remote) I get a notification - security feature
      - Get a button on CarPlay dashboard when I'm in the geofence, so I don't have to reach out to the remote

I'm sure with some extra setup you can have the garage door open automatically when in proximity. And you can have your smart speakers to say "garage door opened" as a security alarm (may need extra setup)

BTW User of the white one-door version, I don't use Meross app, only HomeKit setup. (though I still need to give internet access to the garage opener which I don't like)

      • +1

The CarPlay button is a game changer. Good for me and the missus as we only have one remote for the garage door.

    • I would rather ask siri to open the door for me than the "fully automated".

  • Does it include the sensors kits also or we have to buy those separately? Can’t find anywhere in description except in one photo where it says buy “additional” sensor kit separately.

    • +3

Includes sensors for 3 doors. It’s a fantastic piece of kit. Had it for just under 12 months with zero issues.

  • i need something like this for my hills alarm system, i don't need to automate my automatic garage door

  • Can I connect it to home assistant locally?

  • Thanks OP. Bought 1 with PayPal and paid $73.25. Thanks. Hope it will work with my garage door 😬

    • Did the price you paid include the GST?

      • Although price quoted is before tax but OP mentioned GST inclusive. However, in past I never incurred any GST on my purchases from Aliexpress China even over $100. So let see.

        • GST is charged at checkout. My US$ price is inclusive and my AU$ rate is based around Mastercard's actual exchange rate. Not the website and not PayPal.

Sometimes you're lucky and the website can be better.

Would something like the Shelly 1 for $16.5 not be a way cheaper option to accomplish the same using Home Assistant?

    https://www.ozsmartthings.com.au/products/shelly-1

    • +1

Don't see anything suggesting it supports a momentary switch (edit; closer reading of the manual suggests it has a momentary mode), but either way it doesn't come with a reed sensor to detect whether the door is open or not, which is the main feature of this sensor.

    • Why get a shelly when you can do the same with a $5 sonoff

      • Where do you buy a sonoff for $5? I only see them at similar price to Shelly .

    • yes paired with a door open sensor

  • Weird! I was actually looking at buying one last night, glad I didn't! Thank you!

    • I've been meaning to post it all week and kept forgetting. Good timing indeed.

  • +2

Just garage doors? Or can it do sliding gates, pedestrian gates and garage like ismartgate pro?

    • It could do anything controlled by a momentary switch and a closed state sensed using a reed switch. But you can get a $30 one from aliexpress to do this as well.

The only issue is the cloud service is controlled by some guys in China and could disappear at any time.

  • +1

    Who has three doors.

    • +1

I'd be more surprised if you go through areas where they don't have more than one. Unless you strictly stick to new kit home subdivisions where they have one big one, unlike many older homes.

    • +1

There are double garages with a drive through roller door =3. Or triple garages and probably a drive through door = 4.

    • I have a double garage with a single garage next to it which has a rear door to drive through.

  • at $73 this is an insane ripoff - esp01/32 relay for $10/15 & a door open sensor either wifi / zigbee for $15 max.

    • +2

3 door open sensors for $15 is a bargain and should be shared. Your solution however is for those willing to tinker. Meross offer an easy out of the box working solution once the wiring is connected.

      • -2

That's true, although having externally controlled IoT devices is terrible security, as well as not knowing if they are going to disappear at any moment and make your device useless. alternatively, if you can solder and don't mind mucking with tasmota / esphome, you can get 10 sensors for about $2au each https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32255861885.html :/

        • +3

Meross can works locally without internet. Comparing the others offering, Meross works very well, cheap, well established business, so I wouldn't compare it to dodgy company.

    • +3

Of course it's going to be way cheaper if you're essentially building/coding it yourself
A vast majority of people would have no idea how to start if they had an esp relay and zigbee sensor in front of them

  • Meross ( home kit) single door deal is coming up tomorrow I think for 56$ (Amazon)

    • $54.60 in 2 days Certainly not a bad option if you only have one door.

      • Is there a 2 door option? most older houses have 2 door garage.

        • +2

Yes this is the deal for it. Supports 1, 2 or 3 doors.

  • Can someone clarify if these work with a roller door? The various search results I've found are silent on the matter, but I've seen some other brands that specify they only work on the panel type door.

    • +1

Yes they work on roller doors

    • Yep. Got it on my merlin

      • How did you connect the unit to the Merlin? Does this come with cables and it's easy connect?

        • It comes with cables, it has two wires that you connect into the push button connectors (doesn't matter which cable is connected to which side) and then it has two more wires that connect to a sensor that you can also use to detect if the door is open or closed.

Find your Merlin unit manual and it will show you which connectors are the push button ones, you could probably also call up Meross and they'll help you out also.

          • @Dejy: I found the push button connectors. There were 4 holes. When you get the meross, how did you secure the cable into the holes connectors. Mine doesn't have a screw clamp and it's vertical so any wire going in will just fall down unless secured.

            • @nightqueen: Mine are screw terminals, I likely have a different Merlin unit to you but I think all push button terminal ports would have something to latch onto the wires. I have a terminal block with a push button and ground (push button ground) port and if I short them together it activates the garage opener (open or close depending on position). I can just put the two wires of the Meross Smart Garage Opener into them and screw in the screw terminal to lock the wires in.

      • Where/how did you mount the sensors?

        • Ran a cable down the same side as the motor to the bottom. Mounted a small piece of timber to the garage with the magnet on it. Works a charm.

  • $10 wifi relay off eBay and homebridge for FTW. You can even get them with multiple relays if you have more then 1 door

  • Anyone successfully got these working with the bft sliding gates?

    • You have three sliding gates??
Don’t think it’s suitable for outdoor use though.
You can check compatibility here: https://www.meross.com/mTerminal/support/compatibility-check

      • Doesn't have to be this one, but even the standard meross door openers. Wonder if anyone's connected it to the control box for the sliding gates

        • Like I said, if it’s compatible then it works. Same idea as garage door.
All you need to think about hen is how to weather proof.

    • With BFT motors, you can buy the B-EBA WiFi module separately for this purpose.
I am looking at getting one for a front fence.

  • Looks like many have had issues with the wifi connection in the single door version so I’m more interested in this one even though I only need for one door. Is it much better than than the old Ozbargainers favourite at https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/600376?

    • +1

I believe this one is considered to have a better wifi connection and range due to the external antenna compared to the single door version. This one works with Apple HomeKit, Wofea one doesn't. Also the Wofea one is an internal antenna same as the Meross single door versions.

If you need or want HomeKit support and also require a stronger WiFi receiver/antenna system then this may be worth it but if not the Wofea unit is a great deal.

      • Thanks. I’ve already got the Wofea but haven’t got around to install it. I may consider buying this one for more reliable connection then.

    • Looks like many have had issues with the wifi connection in the single door version

Just how bad is this WiFi issue on the single door version (going on sale in 2 days on Amazon AU)?
My garage is right next to my study room with Wi-Fi router. Not sure if I will run into this issue with the single door unit.

  • Does this plug and play with regular powered garage doors (the type that use dedicated remotes), or do you need to do some wiring or use an electrician?

    • +1

There are 2 wires to connect to the roller door motor. The wifi unit has a power plug.

  • +1

Thanks OP - bargain for me and $5 for you = win win

    • I don't get paid to post on Ozbargain 😉

  • No local shipping like Reolink.

For any warranty claims, I assume I would need to ship it back to meross in China at my own cost?
Also, is everyone else seeing a estimated delivery date sometime in May 2023?

    • AliExpress Standard Shipping is on average taking 2 weeks for me the last 12 months.

  • Just be aware that in the past I recall people who bought this commenting that even if you don’t have 3 garage doors you’ll still see all 3 show up on HomeKit.

So if that will bother you you might be better off with single door version (unless the firmware has been changed)

    • Can anyone with this model confirm? I’m interested in this model as my current single door version has started playing up with Wifi issues.

    • Thats not true. You can deactivate the unused ports and then can hide it in both HomeKit and Meross Apps. I received and installed mine on my two garage doors and can simply hide 3rd, now only have two doors showing in my HomeKit and Meross Apps.

  • Does anyone know if you can get an outdoor sensor? I've installed it on our electric gate.
