  • Is this fairly universal?

    • Yes

    • Yes, but I have seen that I cannot stop the garage door half way once it starts opening/closing.

      • +1

I seem to be able to do this with the controller mounted in the garage, but not the button controllers in the car.
        And not with the APP.

        • +2

Sorry I was not clear. I meant with the meross Android APP.

          • +1

@[Deactivated]: Correct, it's designed to trigger the open and close but you can't (at least to my knowledge) stop it when it's in motion.

      • +1

@John Doh I have had the same experience. It bugs me slightly, but otherwise the connection has been pretty stable/reliable

    • +1

Get an esp01/32 relay module and flash with tasmota for the same product for $10-15

  • +1

It just acts like a switch. I've wired mine to the external switch terminals on my garage door opener. Also comes with a reed switch so it can sense when the door has opened/closed. Doesn't come with anything that detects an obstacle though, have had a few "oh shit" moments as my garage door swings out.

    • Do you know if this can also be connected to an external swing gate motor ?

Has anyone here used it with a motor ?
      thanks

      • +1

Yes, it should work. this is compatible with a lot of the garage and gate motor controllers. Best to check their compatible list though.

It works on my Centurion Centsys gate controller.

      • +1

Yes! We’ve used it on our electric swing gate. The gate obviously needs to already be an automatic with a control box, and then It’s as simple as connecting the input cables to the terminals that open/close. If you want the ‘open’ status to appear you need to install the magnetic reed switch. The included unit is indoors only.. so I have semi waterproofed it and its been working for 6 months. I would prefer a outdoor one but haven’t managed to find a cheap alternative (and I’m just assuming it won’t damage the unit if the switch is compromised 😝)

I managed to find a wiring diagram from a vastly more expensive ‘smart gate’ manufacturer that matched our e-gate control box and followed it and it works! I actually assume the expensive smart gate hardware is virtually the same (just different software) but Meross works well with HomeKit and is a great price! Unfortunately the software doesn’t have a gate connection to HomeKit so it appears as a garage but you can rename it. The app has nice functions to help with other settings too (additional opening time, open warnings etc)

We also have a camera to monitor the gate as there is nothing stopping it opening/closing. Lots of gates have other safety measures that should work with this setup however.

        🤓

        • +1

Thanks for the detailed replies @JackFrost and @cheach

    • I think you can buy extra sensor modules for obstacle detection from your garage door manufacturer.

    • It it a momentary switch? Need a solution that uses momentary but finding it hard to find a homkit solution

      • +1

Shelly 1 (or other models) with HomeKit firmware has been a great solution for me. Bit more fiddly to set up but certainly not by much.

        • Awesome, I'll give it a go, I'm running a home bridge too if the firmware dosen't flash

      • Yes, in the meross app you can set the trigger duration to 0.5s, 1s, 2s or 3s.

  • +2

Have it. Like it. Recommend it. Works best with homekit if you have an apple tv, homepod or newish ipad that’s always on so you can trigger it from wherever. Without one of those devices the meross app will always work from anywhere but homekit only works when you’re on the same wifi.

    • +1

      These will work on Alexa..

Alexa mobile app .. Or an echo dot..

  • +1

Keep in mind HomeKit users. Need an Apple TV or Home Hub for this to work. Yes I know past iPads used to work. But for the sake of $150 just get one

Bought mine from cash converters but you can get cheap ones from cex

  • +2

This thing is so unreliable, at least mine has been.
    Always loses Wifi connection.

    • +4

Is the garage opener unreliable or your WIFI?

Mine work perfectly now since I added an Mesh AP closer to the garage area.

    • Same I upgraded to this from the Bunnings one. Never had an issue with the bunnings one but this would lock me out of my house cause the device wouldn't respond..

    • Mine loses its connection as well. Router is next door.

    • +3

Strange. I’ve had mine for over 2 years and I’ve had to reboot it maybe twice. My second most reliable HomeKit accessory after my Phillips Hue Zigbee lights.

    • I think the problem with this unit and wifi is it doesn't seem to be able to manage any sort of reconnection to wifi without being power cycled. I've got plenty of items throughout the house in locations that are probably not the strongest wifi signal but the Meross garage door opener is the only one that I have had to setup to power cycle every night.
Ironically it actually shows good/strong signal strength to the wifi when it's connected.
So bear that in mind when you're considering a purchase.

    • +2

Been using mine for 18 months, has never lost connection. Probably have some interference with your wifi nearby, or the unit is faulty and you should replace it.

      • Look on the meross subreddit it's the exact same conversation. Heaps of folks complaining about the reliability of the connection to JUST their Meross equipment and other folks piling on telling them "I don't have a problem, must be you!" lolz…

My point was I have a myriad of cheap crappy wifi things around the house in less than ideal locations - Meross is the most unreliable of the bunch for me and it seems for a lot of others in that it is unable to reconnect to wifi without being power cycled.

      • Same here – never had to reboot it. I have an Eero node a few metres away from the garage, so that probably helps.

    • I have the aliexpress version of the meross and it too was losing connection which requires a power cycle. I now have a mesh node in the garage and the problem is gone.

    • We had a similar issue. It was overheating . Not saying that this is what is happening to you but consider it as a potential factor.

  • A bit off topic but does anyone know the best gadget to make a "dumb" electric sliding gate smart? TIA

    • +1

My sliding door is from FAAC, and Meross is compatible with that. What brand is yours?

    • +1

I have these https://ewelink.eachen.cc/product/eachen-st-dc1/ on 2 sliding gates at my place, works well.

Can create shortcuts on your phone also so I just ask siri to open whatever gate I need a minute before I get home so I dont have to wait for it to open when I get there.

Only thing to consider is you need 2.4ghz wifi and make sure it will reach to the area, mine drops out a little I sometimes have to wait 5 seconds or so for it to reconnect then it'll work again. Still easier than having to carry remotes with me everywhere and can open it remotely if ive forgot to leave it open for the dog groomer etc.

      • +1

Excuse my ignorance but could I not achieve all those functions with this Meross unit?

      • +1

I believe the difference though is the Meross unit will tell you the status of the gate/door (open or closed) bsed on its magnetic sensors

        • Eachen have other relays that come with magnets to do the same thing, pretty sure last time I looked they even had little cameras you could hook up if you really wanted to.

Dont know what the price and feature differences are, feel free to google it.

      • The electric motor I purchased off eBay actually stated it has the ability for control using smartphone and they actually use ewelink which is built in I believe. However, I am having issues having it connected to my wifi. It did states 2.4ghz wifi only but my wifi is dual-band and I even setup a guest network that runs on 2.4ghz only but still unable to connect. Not sure what I have done wrong but it just wouldn't connect to wifi and pair in the app :(

        • +1

From memory I may have had to disable 5ghz wifi all together just until I got it to connect, then after that I could re-enable 5ghz and was fine.

          • +1

@immortalbjr: After some fiddling around over the weekend and I finally got it to work on my 2.4ghz guest network! Thanks for sharing your experience.

    • +1

What you are looking for is a Web Relay. ControlbyWeb is a brand I can highly recommend.

    • +1

Esp32 relay module with tasmota and homeassistant

  • +4

Highly recommend it if your Gate/garage door has good wifi coverage. I installed it a couple of weeks ago, and I have no complains

  • +1

Have this and is working great. Initially had issues, I set the door opening time to the time it takes to open the door + 5 secs, it actually should be time to open door + delay for Apple Home to acknowledge and process. This fixed the "obstructed" error, and now works perfectly.

Using an old iPad as a hub, has been working great.

Only gotcha is, the alerts are not time-sensitive, so if you phone is on sleep\quiet you won't get door open reminders.

    • How to make ipad as a hub? Any old ipad is fine??

    • Where is this setting? Is this to stop the thing where the door starts to open close but then randomly stops?

  • Can anyone tell how the iPad thing works? I’m having it but everytime I have to stop infront of the garage, open Meross app and then only I can open the door which I find it bit annoying.

    • +1

It runs like a dream on my Android and my Google Home speakers, but is an absolute nightmare on my wife's iPhone using Homekit.

    • You can add it to homekit and create a siri shortcut if you have an iPhone. Then it will just work with Siri.
Or, if you have Apple Carplay then the garage door button pops up on screen when you get in the location range.

  • +2

I can highly recommend these: https://www.athom.tech/blank-1/garage-door-opener-for-esphom… - have had three deployed for a year now, no problems

    (note: price is in USD)

  • I have a Manual garage door, any suggestions for a new automatic motor to pair with meross?

    • +1

Any. The library of motors that work this this is pretty extensive.

  • A review was posted here on OzBargain.

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/13402451/redir

  • Great product. Zero issues. Can be a bity fiddly setting up depending on your garage motor, but paired with your smart home network and it's a nifty feature to have. Especially if you ever need to let somebody in remotely.

  • Have any purchased this in past where their garage door opener had purple button on it, it says in description that they send an accessory but how reliable is that ?

    • You'll need to provide a picture or something, no idea what you're talking about

      • Meross mention in their description that each garage door opener have a learn button which are colour coded, and if you have purple or yellow one you need additional accessory to use this device. mine is merlin MR800 and it has purple learn button.

so just wanted to see if anyone else had similar one and how was their experience

  • For Homekit, does the Meross and the hub need to be on the same wifi network? I have separate SSIDs for garage wifi and the house.

    • +1

I think it needs the homekit hub needs to see the meross controller which can be achieved by adding a firewall rule to just allow meross controller to pass through.

  • +1

Some experiences on using this garage opener on Homekit:
    * You should install the reed sensor as it tells the opener whether the door has been closed or not
    * Since the sensor can't detect the actual position of the door except open and close, use Meross app to set the timeout so your garage door won't show "obstructed" because it's taking some time to fully open/close
    * You don't need the Meross app after setup unless you need 1) remote control outside of your home network when not using Homekit Hubs (like HomePods, but hey you should get a Hub when using Homekit!) and 2) firmware updates.
    * The garage opener requires internet connection - it will call their home server whether you want it or not, and if you block its internet access it may or may not respond to Homekit queries as it thinks its offline even if it's not. Homekit devices should work fully locally but Meross devices don't. I assume Apple is not enforcing this when certifying Homekit devices.

Don't get me wrong - I like it just like many other OzB'ers do.

    • My experience with internet connectivity is different. I blocked internet access in my router (Deco mesh) but kept access to the LAN, where I also have my ATV HomeKit hub. The result is that I can’t access the door controller via the Meross app, but it works reliably via HomeKit. If I want to update the firmware I
need to remove the internet access restriction.

  • Ive got this on my garage door for the past year. Never had any issues. Always handy to ask Siri to open my garage

  • These are great, easy to install and integrate with homekit/siri really well. What I discovered as an unexpected bonus is the responsive & helpful support via the forum (accessible via the app). I was having issues with notifications and got feedback within about 12hr, so very impressed.

  • got a different brand for 33 bucks off ebay, loratap was the seller.

    • But it won’t have apple HomeKit support

      • Dunno, dont use it, works with google though. So im happy

  • Any security issues with this? Worried about people being able to access it and open my garage

    • +1

They would need to get into your wifi or meross account to access this. It’s a good idea to have your wifi ssid hidden.

      • +1

It’s a good idea to have your wifi ssid hidden.

That's not that useful. The network will still be visible to folks with the appropriate tools and most OS default to squawking the network name in a bid to connect to it (and some can't be configured not to do that) which is not ideal for privacy or battery life.

        • Yeah fair enough. For a skilled person it would not make any difference but the chance of someone that skilled trying to get into a random home’s wifi/garage is pretty slim.

    • No, not unless your wifi network is insecure.

  • Hoping someone knows the answer - We have google products like home, hub max, etc but we all of us at home use iphones. Do we need the homekit version or the one without it?

    Thanks.

    • +1

I use Google Assistant with my garage. It requires you add a pin which you setup in the meross app. so "Hey Google Open my Garage" will come back with "i need your pin"..

You shouldn't need the HomeKit version if you are using Google Assistant with your Home/Hub/etc

      • Thanks for the response. If am coming in car from outside using iphone, then would it work?

        • Yes presumably the app from your phone will work without HomeKit. On my android it is just a widget/app that you click on the garage icon to open/close as an alternative to voice assistance.

          • @GamblorAU: I keep the Meross app as a widget on my phone and can just open/close the garage from anywhere without the need to "Hey Google" and enter in the PIN. Super helpful.

            • @Karl Pilkington: I do a bit of both but have found the widget/app to be inaccurate (i.e. showing opened or closed) and doesn't work all the time. I now have to open the app, swipe down to "refresh" the icon/status (even though it looks like it does this for you when you open the app) and then I can click the button with great success.

I use Google Assistant when leaving the house as it triggers a whole routine, opening the garage is just one step. Coming home I typically just click the widget and doing so doesn't require the pin.

              • +1

@GamblorAU: The widget has a refresh button in the corner. Press it and then open/close the door.

      • The pin thing is an absolute pain in the arse, I hate it. I get why it's an option, but it should not be mandatory.

    • +2

I would definitely suggest going with the HomeKit version and add the meross to homekit. You can also add the same device to google home simultaneously through meross app. This way you can control the device on iPhone and through google nest speakers. Controlling the garage opener through Homekit is a breeze as it doesn't need a pin compared to google home. I find it easier to use in carplay than android auto.

      • Thanks for clarifying. We have a mix of apple and Samsungs at home and I wasn’t sure you could have it controlled from both simultaneously

      • Thanks, I'll get the HomeKit version.

    • You don't need the homekit version unless you want Apple Homekit integration, ie when you use apple maps and you get home it will come up on your Car Play device with a prompt to open the garage door.

My wife and I use iphones but inside the house everything is google smart home so I just went with the non-homekit version and it works great. I just use the app on my phone/watch to open and close the garage door.

    Ozbargains favourite garage door opener

Ozbargains favourite most overpriced garage door opener which also needs external power adaptor!
If you can connect this, you would be able to connect $3 tuya switch, or $9 sonoff basic which comes with built in power adaptor (though requires minor 3 minutes modification of it's relay)

  • the non Home kit version is listed as $59.99 and available now if anyone wants to get one now

    https://www.amazon.com.au/meross-Smart-Control-Compatible-As…

  • No Geofencing?

    • +1

Apple Homekit supports that feature, garage opener shows up with 1km range of my house.

  • Will this work for Richmond sliding gate kits from bunnings? Model is GTR156 to be specific.

  • +1

We got one of these, works very well. It also nicely integrates with Apple Carplay (if you choose the Homekit option). A tile/button appears on your home screen when you are about 500 meters away from home. I assume it will be the same for Android Auto.

It does need a reboot every few months or so, but that's fine.

  • -2

I've got my garage roller door plugged into a Brilliant Smart plug and I switch it on and off via Google assistant while driving. I then open/close it with my normal buzzer. That way my garage door power is only turned on when I need to open the door. It works great and was like $25

    • What is the point of that??

      • There's been reports of garages being opened by some kind of device so I turn it off when it's not being used via the plug.

  • installed my one today from the previous deal… it took me a while to:
    1. find a location for the magnet sensors (due to my garage door design)
    2. get it working on homekit - it eventually did

it's working OK at the moment… i use siri to close / open it or to check whether it is open or closed

  • Drops out pretty often and requires reboot, i have an eero mesh system pretty close so it’s very frustrating when it says offline. I wish there was a better alternate

    • You item may be defective? Maybe see if you can warranty it.

  • I have had to power cycle about 3 times in a year to get it back online. Agreed, its frustrating. Hopefully and update will fix.

    • Try giving it a static IP via a DHCP reservation and see if that helps.

  • +1

I have one of this installed. Losing Wi-Fi connection most of the time even though router is in garage. I have to reboot the modem every time when it lost connection. No other device have this issue in the network. I wouldn't recommend this.

    • I use this for 1 year. Since 1 week, I had wifi connection problem. I should restart wifi router every 2 days. What about you?
