Mastercards not worth the risk anymore :(
I’m still in dispute for 3x $250 which were hacked.

    • +17

please listen to this man. it'll save you a lot of headaches

      • +4

and if you buy them use them ASAP don't hoard

      • Why thankyou. Except that I am a WOMAN! ;)

        • Username checks out 😋

    • +3

I’m still in dispute for 3x $250 which were hacked.

How long is this ordeal going on for?

      • Customer service terrible, now 1month and nothing…

    • +1

How long after activating the cards were they hacked? Thinking of getting these to put towards electricity bills straight after buying.

      • +3

That’s the only way to use these cards. Subsequently my utilities bill is in credit.

      • Do you pay electricity via BPay or just as a credit card?

      • I got pinged a surcharge when used for AGL. council rates worked without surcharge
        .

        • +3

What did you expect,it's AGL. They would sell your grandmother if it meant a $1 profit.

        • +1

I pay actew through paypal via auspost. In paypal, i can setup whatever payment type, including visa, amex, mc. Never had an issue or surcharges.

      • I bought probably 80 cards over the years (used 10% discounted Coles/Myer cards to pay) and used 40 to pay school fees in Jan - 3/40 hacked, purchased July 22. So holding them was an issue. But hey, mega savings IF the $750 hacked is reimbursed

    • +3

True I had 2 cards got hacked as well

      • +1

I wonder how long did you keep the card before it got hacked?

        • +1

          4 months

          • -1

@ozvince: Oh I thought you kept it for a week and spent it all. No wonder it got hacked. Better spent it within a week or days

      • +3

Healthy Land Massage in NSW for $208 seems to be popular with the hackers

        • Yep, happened to me! And Tictok and VM games :(

        • Yep. $98 on one of my $100 cards. It took a while, but I disputed and received a replacement card.

    • -1

How long did you keep the card before you spent it and you realised your cards were being hacked?

    • +2

Did you possibly try to check the card balance on a dodgy website?
I remember the web address provided in the back has .com.au and will redirect to mybalancenow website
If you only type in .com, that would be the dodgy website

    • +1

Me too. I'm still in dispute for 1x $100 card.
Took three months for them to agree it was hacked. Still no replacement card another 3 months later. I'm a bit over continually chasing them on this.

    • +1

Me too. I won’t be buying them again.

  • +1

Make sure the hackers were not your wife and mistress

    • Very well said dude

  • +3

Why someone would buy a $250 card for 2k points when you could go for 2x100 ones and pocket 2x2000 points? Or am I wrong?

    • Not sure what the points are worth, but you will being paying two lots of fees though.

Maybe someone smart can do the math…

    • +1

Previous deals were 10% off, $250 carries better value net of activation fee. Another reason is 5 cards limit per purchase, the higher total amount provides more free money.

  • +21

ok, time to run the math.

2000 Flybuy points = $10 credit to buying stuff in Coles — can't shop almost anywhere else—- restricted buying power.
Since I can regularly get 4% off Coles GC from RewardGateway, 2000 Flybuy point really means $9.6 worth of real money to me (might not be to you, YMMV)

That means pay $105 to gain $109.6/ $110.

So every $100 investment yield 4.38% or 4.76% profit.

if you are not going to spend it straight away, you might as well don't buy this but instead put it into your saving account/mortgage offset account, for example:

Virgin Money Boost Saver 4.55% p.a. Interest (4.85% p.a. with Lock Saver)
Savings Maximiser 5.00% p.a. Interest on Balance up to $100,000 (Monthly Deposit, Balance & Spend Requirements) @ ING

    • Thanks, talking about the 250 card is even pointless I guess.
Regarding putting money in the savings acct compared to this, don't forget 5% interest in them is per annum and this is sort of instance (or at most few weeks time depending on the rate you spend those cards).

      • +1

yes, it is p.a. which is listed in the link description. Hence I said "if you are not going to spend it straight away" so this took the time value of money away from our discussion.

FYI $250 card will yield you 1.01% or 1.17% profit.

    • +3

Don’t forget that the interest from the savings account is pre-tax which will lower the effective yield. Buying the Mastercard or mortgage offset is tax free.

    • +1

4.+% from ING is annual rate. Assuming points are used within a month, this Coles promotion is 4% a month (or 48% annually) and tax free.

      All about context.

    • +1

Remember you pay tax on interest earnings.

    • considering using coles group gift card buy this, it means using coles group gift card to pay council rate, or private insurance or utility bills with extra 4% benifit.

    • So true, basically any GiftCard purchases these days with less than 5% discount doesn’t worth it

Better to save the money to earn interest or put in offset for home loan owners

      • +1

either you have use for it straight away (the longer you wait the higher risk of bin attack/physically lost the card/lost track of the card etc.),

otherwise better put it in savings/offset.

    • You can redeem the $10 / 2,000 points flybuy credit at Officeworks too … and possibly Liquorland / First Choice

  • +3

    @richardl

PLEASE NOTE IF YOU HAVE MULTIPLE FAMILY FLYBUYS CARD THEN ONLY ANY ONE MEMBER WILL GET POINT.

last time I had 10 cards with my and partner FLYBUYS which are connected as family members so I only got point with one FLYBUYS card not both so don't do that mistake.

I created new FLYBUYS now without connecting it to family account to avoid similar mistake.

    • The T&Cs included in the post say this offer can be claimed up to five times per account.

      • this is where there is ambiguity .. it says "per account" not per family membership.. ! so basically i had two account with two separate numbers but they were connected as family member online so they didn't give points to both the account but instead gave it to one flybuys only… ! and hence correct wording for terms and condition should be "per FAMILY" not "per account"… !

anyways this time discount is not worth as most saving account give high or equal rates for time being … so no need to rush around… !

  • -3

This point deal is so poor in current high interest Saving account that only dumb without maths skill will end-up buying this cards … !

Also , not one can't use this credit card to purchase discounted Woolworths gift cards anymore through Woolworths mobile or HCF. Nevertheless Saving rates are high so no point wasting time to find this cards

    • +1

      only dumb without maths skill

I am dumb of maths skill. But a problem not as me of average much above English

      • +1

lol so you are saying those with better english are dumb in maths ? :) ingenious … !… finding error in spelling or grammar won't prove you smart or good in English or maths either >.. !!!

    • You pay tax on interest earnings.

      • ya but you don't lose money like what happens if cards are hacked …. so it's about risk and reward ration … so if there was 10% discount after fees then possibly people would take risk of hacking compared to putting it all in saving accounts .. !

    • So only dumb people will buy these cards to pay for things they were already going to pay for at full price like rates / bills…. Call me dumb then.

      • -2

Rates don't give you discount and if you paying rate for a year in advance then yes you are dumb as you could earn interest by keeping money in savings account and pay the bill when they are due.

Also, these cards get hacked easily so risk reward ratio isn't great to invest in this cards at times when bank saving rates are closed to 5%… !

If discount was for 10% instead of points than may be worth running around to get few cards .. !

        • We clearly aren’t on the same page. I never said anything about paying rates a year in advance so talking about bank saving rates is redundant. Let’s simplify it.

Rates bill is due - option 1 pay it with normal credit card and get no discount.
Step 2. Do your normal shop at coles and get no discount, or buy coles gift card for up to 4% discount.
Option 2 - purchase 5x$100 prepaid Mastercard during your normal shop, use it straight away so chances of being hacked extremely low.
Step 2: do your normal shop at coles with the 4% gift card plus $50 off your shop. $25 profit after Mastercard 5x$5 fee.

The fact that this isn’t a flat 10% discount means there will be less idiots hiding these cards or buying more than their share so I don’t expect you will need to “run around to get a few cards”.

          • @Slo20: lol … in that case for option 1 - you never mentioned that bills are due this week ! so let's forget about that part… !

option 2 duable buy who buys $500 worth grocery in one day ? so not worth buying more then 1 gift card for $100 and use it .. !

yes, i do agree this time it will be available easily as no one will buy $20,000 worth gift card that they bought last time when coles gave flat discount to $250 gift card… !

            • @SydBoy: This will be my last reply because you seem to include your own stories.

who buys $500 worth grocery in one day

I never said buy $500 of groceries. I said buy $500 of prepaid Mastercards whilst doing your normal shop.

you never mentioned that bills are due this week

“buy these cards to pay for things they were already going to pay for at full price like rates / bills”

Sure I didn’t say the date the bill was due but I wouldn’t already be paying for them if they weren’t due.

              • -2

@Slo20: same, my last reply as you seems to changing whole narrative on topic of discussion … !

                1. what is the point of $500 gift card while doing shoping? we are talking about benefits of buying … not when to buy … as everyone knows when to buy.. ! no point talking if that is what you trying to say … "when to buy" … lol :D :D

                2. again you mentioned no one buys for 1 year in advance but buy for the bills that are due now if they are not due now that means buying for future bills which again contradict argument to buy now and pay off to get instant discount as well avoid hacking possibility… ! :D

i am sure there will be use for it for someone and buying to pay off same day does make some sense but buying to use over period of time means increase risk of hacking and not worth considering saving interest one gets in bank without hacking possibility.

  • KB Salt n Pepper Squid pls. Also Marathon Spring Rolls be a great treat. Coles, Woolies, Aldi, anyone?

  • Anyone know if the Mastercards cards can be used to pay an ATO tax bill? They used to work in the past…

    • Need to convert to iTunes gift card first.

    • +2

They were stopped for a while and then worked again after someone complained. I used them last on 5 January 23 but there are no guarantees as they could be blocked again. I will use them again as soon as I buy them from this deal and post the outcome. Otherwise, I have been able to use them to pay my electricity and rates.

      • +1

        Appreciate your insight!

    • +2

Yes, I just used it yesterday with 0.2% surcharge.

      • Great, thanks.

  • With the cards, does anyone have any issues checking their balance? I always get an error to try again later

    • +2

Yeah me too! I end up just keeping track myself on a piece of paper.

These cards are becoming a pain that isn't worth the hassle.

      • Try in cognito or equivalenr.

    • I had no issues and also there is an automated telephone balance checking.

    • only if you have been checking multiple cards previously…. they do stop letting you check from the same IP if you do it too often in the same day

  • +1

close in price now to the standard Aldi prices for these types of things!

  • With so much free money in the economy today, we should really be talking about deflation

    • Not how that works.

  • +2

This deal is for Coles to increase your spend requirement for bonus point offers. In return you get $4.

P.S. These cards don't work on Lyca mobile signup. Think 'subscription' type businesses are catching on.

  • Cueing @WookieMonster! Coles MC GC deal came earlier than expected although it's not 10% off as predicted.

    • +1

@WookieMonster Would there be 10% off before June? Checking previous posts here, there were 10% off in Feb 2021, June 2021 & 2022 and Oct 2021 & 2022

      • Doubt there would be another 10% off deal before June, but who knows!

(You forgot the 10% off deals in Feb 2022 and Sep 2022 as well.)

        • Thanks. I haven't bought the Vanilla cards before
Bought Coles MC cards first time in June last year
Reviews online were terrible for the Vanilla cards
Not sure if the Vanilla cards can be converted easily to other cards like the Coles MC before they get hacked

          • +1

@trixieb: I have purchased many Vanilla Visa gift cards myself and have not hard a single problem myself. To be fair:

            • I know how they are supposed to work (i.e. they only support signature verification for in-person purchases, not all merchants accept prepaid gift cards as a payment method), so I set my expectations accordingly.

            • I have never needed to contact support (e.g. because my card was hacked, because I was sold a gift card that was already activated).

If you look at the Product Review page, there are some common themes:

            • Cards being hacked. (To be fair, this has been happening for a long time, because Vanilla Visa gift cards have been available in Australia for a long time.)

            • People not realising that signature verification is the only option for in-person purchases until they try to make a purchase, and then either don’t know how to use signature verification or the merchant refuses signature verification. If you are the one purchasing the gift card, it says on the back of the packaging use for purchases that do not require a PIN

            • Cards having inactivity fees deducted from the card balance.1

            • A lot of “this card sucks” and “this card is a scam”, which isn’t really helpful in determining why someone thinks that.

If you think about it, Vanilla Visa gift cards are mostly identical to Coles Mastercard gift cards, because the Coles Mastercard gift cards are a rebranded version of the Vanilla Visa gift card specifically created for Coles. They are both owned by InComm and are both issued by Heritage Bank. The key differences worth calling out are:

            • They operate on different card networks

            • Vanilla Visa gift cards have a higher card purchase fee

            • Vanilla Visa gift cards only support signature verification for in-person purchases, whereas Coles Mastercard gift cards can support a PIN for in-person purchases if you choose to set one.

            1. Only cards with expiry dates of before August 2023 have these fees, and it is generally illegal to sell such cards to a customer now.

            • +1

              @WookieMonster: Thanks for the details
A few years ago, a friend gave me a Visa card from Aldi. Don't know if this is similar to the Vanilla one. I used it at Coles/Woolworths in-store, no issues

              • @trixieb: That was probably an OnlyONE Visa gift card. Some of those have PINs, some of those do not have PINs. It’s very inconsistent…

    • (Sorry, I’ve been on break for a few days!)

I don’t think it is earlier than expected. There are usually multiple Flybuys bonus points deals for Coles Mastercard gift cards throughout the year.

  • Wondering if anyone knows if the mastercard can be used on Shopback or to buy restaurant choice cards from their website?

    • +2

Yes, can be used on shopback

      • Oh cool any idea if it works to buy woolies gc with nrma?

  • Can someone help me to understand this statement:
BONUS POINTS can be awarded more than once for each Gift Card type including different denominations of the same Gift Card but can only be collected up to 5 times per Flybuys account.

I understand 5 is the limit, can I buy 5x$100 cards in one transaction?

    • +3

Yes. Worked last time with the same promo. I prefer to split to get more fuel vouchers/free coffee

  • +1

Give me a 15% discount on these gift cards and I'll take the risk, otherwise, no thanks I'll wait for the discount gift card from Woolworths

  • -1

Wow! Something instead of the pre-diabetus sugar offers of Whittakers and OJ

  • These offers only happen around once every six months and I wait for them. I buy the cards with my platinum edge amex (see referrals), use them to pay my rates because I wouldn't otherwise get any frequent flyer points for paying rates and then get 1.5 points per dollar. I don't mind being 6 months ahead on rate payments.

    • I pay 3 sets of rates in Victoria and can use AMEX. Some councils do not allow but I can do it using Post Billpay.

  • I've been fortunate, Reckon ive gone through 100 or more if the $250 denominations over the last few years, none hacked. 2 left in drawer… Fingers crossed.

    • your IP address has been forwarded to hackers

  • How are the gyozas now?

    • They don't mix well with MasterCard

  • What alternatives are there for Coles eGift cards? I've been getting them with 3% discount on Macquarie Marketplace, but this morning I see that Coles cards are no longer available there.

    • +1

      shopback 2%

    • macquarie doesn't allow you to use external cards to basically you pay through your macquarie saving accounts .. not worth it.. !

      • I have found buying eGift cards in Macquarie Marketplace very straightforward. This morning I was going to transfer $97 to my Macquarie account (which arrives immediately), purchase a $100 Coles eGift card, and download it straight away. In contrast I find the Shopback app / Superswap / Prezzee process very messy.

        • +1

The point I was making is that you can't use Coles discount MasterCard to purchase discounted Coles e-gift card through Macquarie bank as they don't allow outside payment method.

Shopback isn't messy at all , once you saved your credit card then it is even much easy to order through shopback.

        • Macquarie doesn't have coles gift cards anymore. I just checked and see above. Any reason why?
I remember they dropped off last year I think as well but came back shortly after

  • Does anyone know if I can use a Coles Mastercard giftcard to purchase an Ultimate Everyone Gift Card and stack with this offer: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/762234

  • Can I use a Coles eGift card to pay for a Coles Mastercard gift card?
