                      • @abs898: Not bad. I’ve Amx plat that earns 1.125/$. But will be closing that later this year.

                    • +1

                      @maverick1: Spend 60k for 2nd year gold. Silver 30k

              • @abs898: Has this been proven? That's what the t&c says but has anyone actually got their gold status cancelled after cancelling the card?

  • +2

Just note that it will take up to 90 days for bonus Qantas points, and Commbank seem to certainly use that entire period (i.e. 3rd bill) so if you don't continue to spend the $2500 per month you will cop the fees. Otherwise, has been a great card to take overseas (zero fees and bonus point earning), app is good, travel insurance is good, rewards are good.

    • Once you get the points can you cancel straight away or you you need to spend the $2500 that month to avoid them charging the $25 fee before fully closing the account?

  • Is this a metal card ? It’s looks like it.

    • It isn't. Its just a fancy looking plastic card.

    • +1

Black plastic. Details are printed on the rear.

  • Hi, so if I dont make $2500 spend costs ya $35 month, but if you make $5000 spending in 90 days you can get $500 worth of gift cards?can the $5k be spent on say paying for a visa ie Aussie govt?thanks

    • I normally pay council rates, so will be fine.

      • As long as it isn't via bpay, there's no points for bpay iirc

  • So every 55 days you need to spend $2,500 or pay $35?

  • +4

Had a pretty bad experience with Commbank recently when applied for this card. Got approved and card sent and I activated it and then realised that it was not the card I applied for.
Came to know that I didn't meet income requirements but in no step of the way was I informed that I would be getting another card.

    • +2

Similar happened in a previous application for me, they changed the card I was applying for without notifying, lucky I spotted it before it went through.

    • +1

      Same thing happened to me.

Not this exact card but applied for their Diamond Rewards card when I refinanced.

Got "Conditionally Approved" but when the actual card arrived, they dropped the credit limit and just sent me a standard rewards card without informing me at all.

Called up and they've made a mistake with the application on their end, but too bad, you ain't getting the extra bonus points because we've already sent the credit card and can't change it anymore.

    • +1

Same thing happened to me last month

    • +1

Such a nightmare dealing with Commbank, I have never had a worse banking experience. It took weeks for them to sort their systems out which kept rejecting my address or something even thou Im an existing customer with the same address so the computer system kept telling me I was approved and then closing my application, no one could understand why, then they rejected me for - to many rejected applications, despite them all being system errors!. They sent me to a branch to sort it, who when I got there waited in line told me they cant help with credit cards in the branch it has to be over the phone - the guy who met with me suggested I get a card with another bank as he himself had issues with the bank he worked for!. Finally after waiting for hours on the phone got through and the guy tried to sort it out despite endless system errors and what do you know, wrong card just like the rest of you. But they still spam me with offers for a card I didnt even get. Im in the process of canceling all my accounts with them such a useless bank. But they made how many billions so they really dont care

    • Same here. Have always had high end cards pay in full end of each month. Have loads in offset, investment property paid for by tenants, got rejected except for $5k card. Cancelled $16k card with anz to swap to this

  • +1

Does the CommBank low fee credit card count as an award card? Can I apply for this if I've held the low fee credit card less than 12m?

    • Keen to know as well. Thanks

    • Offer not available on all other card types, existing cards, and switches from other card types and is not available to customers who currently hold, or have held, any Awards card types in the 12 months prior.

  • It's a decent bonus/deal compared to what else is available currently, if you can meet the spend criteria which is relatively steep.
I just applied and was conditionally approved for $6k limit, even after successfully getting a new NAB credit card only just over a month ago.

    • Have you had the formal approval come through?

      I'm still waiting for mine.

  • -3

Looks interesting. Can't decipher.in the fine print if $1 spend = 1 Qantas point?
Is there a monthly or annual cap?

    • +2

Not sure what part of the description are you having trouble with?

Earn up to 3 Awards points or 1.2 Qantas Points for every $1 spent using your Mastercard on eligible purchases, up to $10,000 in a statement period

      https://www.commbank.com.au/credit-cards/ultimate.html

      • -2

        What's the monthly cap?

      • +1

the key words there are "up to". For most purchases, unless you are a frequent international shopper, you will get 0.8 points or less per $1

        • My bad, you're right.

        • -2

Thanks. I was smelling the rat with that fine print ..So I will stick with my Qantas Citibank card …

  • +5

Got this a few months ago.
Hot tip, insert chip and pin the first time you use it, then you can tap.

  • Can you pay rent with this card? I don't think the rental agency cares. 500$ for 5000# spend in 3 montha is pretty much possible, just pay rent and bills. Thanks to inflation.

    • If the agency accepts BPAY then you can use BPAY via BeemIt using your CC.

      • Doesn't that cost some money to Bpay?

        • Nah I don't think so. I have been paying all my bills through BPAY via BeemIt and never been charged anything.

          • @heynik: Haven't owned a cc in last 11 years lol now I feel like people make money with points and I should too. Be a true OzB.

I'll think about it lol thanks

            • +1

@sqheaven: Haha! I go a step ahead and even pay my quterly PAYG and GST using CC. Just as a disclaimer make sure to pay off card every month no matter what. 22%+ interest is not worth paying for points.

              • @heynik: I never knew you can pay PAYG and GST with CC, what kind of fees is involved?

          • @heynik: Really? Can someone confirm this? Seems too good to be true.

            • @expatOz: I just double checked if I am getting points for my spend by paying through BeemIt. Can confirm I am still getting points as on the statements it shows as BeemIt and not the billers name.

              • @heynik: Cool thanks but more importantly is it being considered as cash advance?

                • @expatOz: Nah. Considers as normal spend. I have never paid any extra $$ to pay these bills.

                  • @heynik: Awesome thanks for confirming! I just checked my REA also accepts card so I can easily reach the min spend.

                    • @expatOz: good hack, my REA accepts BPAY so I will pay through Beem if I get this card. Amazing, that takes care of the monthly minimum spend!!
So essentially the card is fee free? If that is the case might sign up despite the poor currency rate and poor points earning.
70k points for freeish is not bad.

  • Anyone with this met the spend criteria, and able to say how long the wait was after doing so? Still waiting here nearly a month after doing so

    • Have you checked that your spend is elligible? You can cross check your spend and the reward points in the internet banking section from memory

    • I got card late Jan, met spend early feb, got points just now. I made sure to pay it soon after spend as well not waiting for statements to be issued.

    • For anyone else wondering, after reading through all the Ts&Cs, they get sent to your QFF account on the following statement day. And if you close the account prior to this date, they can’t be converted to QFF points. I can see them sitting there as “earned” in Commbank points, but yeah, can’t access them yet unfortunately.

      • Took over 60 days for me this time. I even called to hurry it along to no effect.

    • +1

Finally received my bonus points. Took a good 90 days after meeting spend (100 days from activation).

  • If I have secondary card holder, is the minimum spent to meet requirement combined spending between 2 card holders?

  • +1

Just cycling off this card now. Redeemed points for Velocity.

Word of caution however, it was right up there as the worst sign up and customer experience i've ever gone though as a brand new customer. Really caught me by surprise. A nightmare of repetitive nonsense requests from them asking for excessive personal and financial information (not just a few pay slips, licence, and a payg) far exceeding any other bank i have dealt with. Had to go through a formal complaint process and challenge their remarks where eventually they backed down and approved it. Absolute circus of stupidity and incompetence (i met every eligibility criteria with flying colours). They also completely buggered the netbanking account somehow that also required an escalation to get working. I was going to keep the card for a while for the decent insurance coverage and use for primary spend but after the way they handled the sign up no thanks keen to put them in the rear view mirror.

    • +1

Similar to you, I wrote a comment above on another post - worst experience ever - it was so ridiculous I stupidly kept trying just to not have wasted so much time, I gave up in the end. Went to another bank and was sorted with 3x the limit in the space of about 4 days.

Hard to imagine a bank can make so much money and be so terrible.

    • +1

To counter this, was very easy for me. I don't use commbank regularly but still have a cdia account with them so I can get bulk cash out at a branch if needed.
This card just needed the application form and 2 payslips as a follow up, card in the mail a few days later.

    • Your experience is certainly valid. But I'd just like to point out, on these kinds of posts there's always people with really good experiences and people with really bad experiences. Just look at the ANZ deals for example. Commbank tends to have more good experiences than bad, but the bad ones are still there. Citibank seem to have a lot of bad experiences in comparison

      • It is important to share i think. Especially as i said a brand new customer. They may have a strong rep in some aspects but id argue its not with credit cards. ANZ have a lot more and better cc deals than CBA. With that comes greater volume and variety of applicants and especially churners. For what that is worth ANZ have always been a fast smooth application as a returning customer.

        • To me, it's very hard to know if they're better or worse as there's no published stats on this stuff.

Read the negs here for example
          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/730616

I guess what I'm trying to say is people shouldn't skip applying to these deals based on some negative experiences, as those occur with every bank (and really every service). But the returns are worth the risk. But if the application seems to be going sideways, just cancel it and move on

But you should still share when things go wrong and push companies to do better. We don't need to pretend everything's perfect, but also have to be ready as churners for things to go poorly at times

        • +1

Personally I have not had issues with ANZ but they cop some of the worst feedback by far on OZB whenever their CC sign up deals turn up.

  • If you have home loan with commbank and its packaged, will the card fee be waived?

    • +3

This card is not eligible with the package

  • I have gold card with Commbank, am I eligible for this promotion?

    • +1

Low rate cards are separate to awards cards for cool down periods. So if you're referring to the low rate gold card, yes you can sign up to this and collect this benefit too.

  • +20

I've had this card for about 6mths, and a cash advance qualifies as 'card spend' for the purposes of assessing the monthly fee waiver. (will cost you $3/mth if done correctly, and cost you more [the cash advance interest rate] if you do it incorrectly).

Since a cash advance falls within the 'card spend' criteria to waive the $35/mth fee: if you're going to fall short any month, one method is to overpay the card into a positive balance, then wait for the amount to process and be 'available balance' for at least 1 night.

Then you can eft transfer an amount back to your normal bank acct but, DO NOT send back more than a positive balance (Inc the $3 fee). Since your positive balance is your money it's not really a cash advance but, you must still pay a $3 fee - per the T&C).

EG some months I've spent 0, made a $2505 payment and then a few days later send back $2500. You must account for any unpaid balance & unbilled transactions. Eg if I've spent $501 (posted & pending), send same $2505 but eft send back $2000. Need to complete process before statement closes.

    • So you make sure you've got a positive balance if spending under $2500 & then transfer it back & you avoid the $35 fee?

        • Interesting. That's the only way that this card could be even remotely worthwhile.

Does the cash advance count towards the $5k spend for the bonus? I'd suspect not.

  • A word of warning from my previous experience. Signed up in early December. Paid the $5k in the first statement. CBA only just gave me the points 2 days ago. So had to basically spend $5k +2.5k +2.5k to avoid the fees. They give themselves 90 days to pay up. The time before they paid ASAP. Bit dissatisfied so just be cautious.

  • I'm thinking of getting this credit card to use overseas while earning Qantas points, since there is no international transaction fees.

Does anyone know if CBA charges a margin on the exchange rate? Or if it's the MasterCard rate?
Ie: is the rate similar to Citibank / HSBC / ING / 28 degrees cards?

    • -1

~3%, nowhere near as good as those you mention https://www.commbank.com.au/international/foreign-exchange-r…

      • Yeah, that's pretty bad, as an example, CBA for YEN is at ~86 whereas Mastercard is ~91.

      • +6

I don't think that is right. Those rates are for purchasing currency/transferring money using CBA. Nobody here would be silly enough to use any of the Banks for that, or they would risk their OzB badge ;)

I haven't made any International purchases yet to confirm, but reading this on CBA website, makes me believe that transactions will be using MasterCard rate:

Fee Type How much will I pay? When am I charged?
International transaction fee 0% for Ultimate Awards, Low Fee Gold and CommBank Neo cards When you make a transaction that is converted by Mastercard or Visa from a foreign currency to Australian dollars. When you make a purchase or obtain a cash advance in Australian dollars while overseas, or while in Australia (for example online) where the merchant, or the financial institution or entity processing the transaction, is located overseas.

Maybe someone who has used the card for International purchases can confirm? I will find out soon myself as the plan was to use this card instead of Bankwest Zero Platinum MCD, which doesn't earn points.

        • +2

I used a Low Fee Gold card overseas last year and it was pretty much bang on the mastercard rate.

Incidentally, early in that trip, I found out the hard way how much of a rort the HSBC "global" debit card is, with 0% fee, but a lot of margin built into their own rate.

So, if the Ultimate works like the Low Fee Gold (seems like it) then it would be a good overseas option.

          • +6

@endolphin: Just confirmed myself. Paid accommodation deposit, and the amount was identical to MasterCard rate - down to the cent.

            • @WalterBiH: probably the last hurdle for me covered. With the bpay via beem for our rent to cover the minimum payments and this, I will apply now :)
              appreciate the comments!

  • -1

    Ngl
    Pretty average card
Citi or anz would be better for value for money
    $5000 spend is heinous

  • Is an annual credit card fee tax deductible?

    • only if you are a business and it is exclusively for business use.

  • -2

No foreign exchange fees is a scam not a feature, it's built in to their poor exchange rate, around 3% https://www.commbank.com.au/international/foreign-exchange-r…
Yes others do this, but the point is it's not a card to use travelling.

  • -1

If you want the best information on credit cards go here - pointhacks.com.au

  • Does anyone know what currency rate they use when you are overseas? Edit: Nvm I read the other comments!

  • -1

Amex is the only one reasonable credit card provider in Australia.

  • I got my first CC late last year (westpac black) and got the bonus points. Is the general way to maximise CC benefits to cancel that card immediately after getting the points and jump onto whichever cards offer good sign on bonuses? I spend around 2-3k a month.

    • Yes, son! I cancel the very day that bonus points land usually. Don't forget to actually call to cancel and make up a story that you need to close to reduce your credit limits as you are applying for a loan, and ask for a refund of the annual fee. Some banks will do this, and some won't care. But if you don't ask, you don't get.

      • Do u have a fixed long term card that you hold on to?

      • Ok thanks! And the bonus criteria where you mustn't have had that card in the last 12 months, is that 12 months from the date you cancelled?

  • I don’t know if it was targeted but I was offered 90,000 bonus Qantas Points for this card.

Received the points one statement after hitting the bonus spend.

    Edit,
This is a GREAT card for overseas use/points gaining. Not so much value in points for domestic use.

    • are you an existing customer? I wonder how you got targetted.

      • +1

Yeah I had the card before and then got the email ~12months after I had cancelled it.

Keep in mind when I first got the card they were only offering ~36,000 bonus Qantas points.

  • Great CC for international travel as well (No international transaction fees) - as long as the country you are going to has a lot of EFTPOS terminals

  • So I get this right. I have to spend 2.5k a month. Or I'm charged $35 bucks?

    • yup

      • -1

Mmm that's not worth it.. 😅

  • Just applied and conditionally approved subject to the documents verification.

They even requested to upload statements for a card which was closed in Oct last year. Don't know why it appeared in their credit enquiry as I can see it's closed when I check the credit report via Equifax.

Had to upload statement for all current loans.

  • 10% return? That's low

    • Agree. I churn about 10 cards per year and this doesn't meet my thresholds.

Edit: To be fair it's probably 13.4% if you value Qantas points at 1c and ignore the additional requirement to continue spending to avoid the monthly fee:

$700 worth of Qantas points, less $30 fee, divided by $5000…

      Which is still pretty ordinary.

      • What 10 do you cycle?

I'm a rookie and only do 4, would love to do 10
