Been hunting around for a new HDD, just came across this on MWave.

Looks like a decent deal so I thought I would drop it on here

Looks like it was previously this cheap in October at another supplier

    $31.19 / TB

  • New model 2x18 imminent. Probably clearing stock

    • Got a link on the source :O

    • Someone may be able to confirm.

But my understanding is that the 2x16 / 2x18 drives have dual actuators / drive heads. So apparently the drive shows up as 2 logical drives to the OS. You can technically RAID0 them to just get one drive, but part of me thinks that's a bad idea.

      Happy to be corrected.

This is quite a bad price on this so called deal here.

As you can see both prices is cheaper than $499.

    • Warranty on the MWave site says 5 years.

    • Retail warranty is 5 years on Exos drives. I would question if these are Australian retail drives or if they are grey imports. A quick way of checking would be via the drive serial numbers.

The description of the second listing mentions OEM stock. These are usually drives that were sold direct to a system builder, so you cannot claim warranty through Seagate. You are at the mercy of the Ebay Seller, who can disappear at any time.

      • I was just bringing up some cheaper options.

Yes, but the drives at Mwave are also OEM stock, most likely Australian OEM stock as opposed to grey import stock. Becase Exos drives are only ever found as enterprise OEM. I'm just saying.

But i suppose you're right. Any of these ebay sellers could go bankrupt and shut up shop any of these days even but they've been around since say 2007.

        • I do not believe the drives from Mwave would be classified as 'OEM'.

I know I have Exos 'retail' sourced drives that do come up in Seagate's warranty checker on their website. I have other drives I know are OEM, and if you check their serial numbers, the website tells you to speak to your system builder for warranty requests. This would be the case if the drive was from a Dell SAN for example, it was never meant to be sold direct to public.

I always works on the assumption that a hard drive will fail during its life, especially given my drives endure a 24/7 life in my home server. I am normally inclined to source the drives from a retailer where I know I can claim the full warranty direct from Seagate.
