  • How's this reliability compared to WD Red Nas series?

    • +4

Been running a couple of EXOS drives along with other brands in my Plex server for years without issues. YMMV

      • Just wondering if these drives makes the clicking noise quite often ? I shucked 2x Western Digital Elements 14TB drives into my Synology and they make the clicking sound quite often and which is really annoying. I am seriously thinking about swapping those drives with these ones if they are quite. Thank you in advance.

always choose enterprise products. big MTBF gap between Red and Exos.

      • OR…. now hear me out, OR…. choose a WD Red or Seagate Ironwolf and enjoy the rock solid performance and reliability they provide your home NAS, at a much cheaper price.

        • well actually, Red and Ironwolf are usually more expensive than exos or Ultrastar. You can check in this store's website.

          • @asuka1204: Okay, depends where you look and what's on sale I guess. Here's a typical PC store link sorting WD drives from high to low price.

            https://www.centrecom.com.au/internal-desktop-hard-drives?or…

I'm not familiar with "Red Pro" vs "Red Plus"… I think there's a lot of marketing musical chairs going on with both WD and Seagate products. Hard to keep up. End of the day, I think good advice is to follow the use case or purpose of drive. If it's storing all your movies on a home NAS, then "enterprise data centre" class might be overkill.

            • @cerealJay: I truly understand your opinion and I agree that "overkill is unnecessary".16TB is the sweet spot of large capacity HDD and according to my observation, in most cases, the enterprise series is cheaper than NAS series. Maybe it is just their business strategy, since not many home users are familiar with enterprise series, they just pay more to get a HDD with labeled "NAS". WD and Seagate are really good at marketing. For example,WD gold is the same as Ultrastar, But it will cost much more than Ultstar.

The equivalent comparison WD drive series would be the Ultrastar, not the Red.

    • +2

The WD Reds are comparable to the Ironwolf range. These are NAS grade drives. The Exos are Seagates top spec enterprise drives.

Looking at MTBF, both the Reds and Ironwolfs are 1 million hours, while the Exos are rated at 2.5million hours.

As mentioned before the Ultrastar would be the most comparable (also 2.5 million hour MTBF).

I have some 8TB Exos in my server at home. They have all been rock solid.

$/TB this would be 31.19 per TB.

Techinacally this from Catch would be more worth it at 14TB though, it would equal to 29.65 per TB.

The higher the storage the less per TB it would supposed to cost, so unless u desperately need exactly 16TB, then u can find better deals.

    • Exos x16 vs x18 for that price difference not worth going for the catch deal

      • Ah, I must've misread the numbers. Apologies

  • Any local warranty from these guys?

    • +1

Reading from the description on their site (btw the description is about a different drive) it has 5 years limited warranty.

Don't quote me on that as I could be wrong but i dont see anywhere else

    • This is the Australian QNAP site, so the warranty will be local. In this case you would contact Seagate Australia directly for warranty. All you need to do is show them the retailer invoice.

I have dealt with Seagate Australia before to warranty a drive, they were excellent. The turn around time from shipping the drive, them receiving it, forwarding the drive to their Singapore facility for testing, and then shipping me a replacement drive was incredibly fast. I had the replacement drive in my hands within a week. That was pre-COVID, so things may have slowed down a bit with parts shortages and slower postage/logistics.

And yes, the Exos drives have 5 year warranties.

      • It's not the QNAP site, only a QNAP authorised reseller. Regardless, the drives still have a five year warranty and are Aus stock so I don't think you'd get a better deal right now.

    Cheaper here:

Ebay: "ST16000NM000J Exos X18 16TB SATA 6Gb/s Enterprise Internal Hard Drive HDD New"
    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/275066518232

NOTE: they are an OzBargain-proven reliable seller. They were the seller for the infamous(?) HDD Group Buy earlier in the year.

(I'm not affiliated with the seller. I was one of the group buy purchasers/participants.)

    • How good is the packaging (Considering that they will be coming in from overseas)?

      • +1

Image here of part of the packaging (which I still had on my desk after 8 months, sigh):
        https://imgur.com/a/gzAlII3

        • The HDD was in an antistatic and sealed bag (not pictured).
        • This was then snug-fit into HDD-sized polyethylene foam (~2cm around all sides/top/bottom).
        • The foam block + HDD was then inside a HDD-sized cardboard box.

It looked like it was packaged by Seagate (the HDD manufacturer) itself and came straight off the pallet.

I don't recall if there was a additional bubble-wrap-lined bag/envelope, but would think the above is enough alone.

NOTE: I was also iffy about how safe HDD transport would be, but was assured by some other Group Buy participants that it is fine as all the HDD heads (things that move inside to read the "discs") are "parked" - meaning they are positioned away from the discs where there is an extremely-low/zero chance of them bumping around and damaging the discs inside.

For everyone's info. Just bought directly from them 2 x ST18000NM000J @US$255.00 each via PayPal. The order took 4 days to arrive. Packed well and working well in my nas.

    • Thanks for this, seems pretty affordable for enterprise drives! Wish it stacked with ebay codes

  • Prices are up compared to 18 months ago and 6 months ago :(

Damn Aussie dollar just keeps on falling, hdd prices should be falling!

  • Good price for an enterprise disk with Aus stock and five year warranty. Bought the 12TB one - Thanks!

  • Good price. I recently got 2 EXOS and find they're quieter than the IronWolf Pro I also have.

  • Promo is still active, for anyone interested. (29/10/2022 @ 2pm, and still says 1 day 9hrs remaining).

Just got the same deal as in OP. $499 / 16TB = $31.20 per Enterprise-grade Terabyte. Unreal.

Cheaper per TB than ANY Ironwolf Pro at Umart… and by a longggg margin: $37.10~$39.90 vs $31.20.
